OVERVIEW: WRITE 8 PAGE THESIS PAPER EXPLAINING HOW FILM CAN OFFER PHILOSOPHICAL KNOWLEDGE, USING THE THREE TEXT SOURCES AND 2 FILMS I PROVIDED/LISTED IN THIS OUTLINE AND ORDER DESCRIPTION.

Topic: Films, like many other forms of art, seems to offer us knowledge. Sometimes this is only factual knowledge, such as details about how people dressed at some time in the past. Other
times, films seem to offer us deep insights into such things as what is valuable in life, the nature
of love, of what it is to be a person, and the compulsion of hatred and desire. Still, there are
reasons to think that films are constitutively unable to offer us genuine knowledge. For
example, fictional films are “made-up” and, so it may seem by definition, not about the truth.
Also, films typically don’t aim to tell us the truth about our world, so much as to be
entertaining, moving, etc. Should we therefore see films as only pretending to offer
knowledge, or only giving us the unjustified feeling that we’ve learned something?

****DRAFT Thesis: Films can offer us knowledge, depending on the audience ability to comprehend/relate to the truth being revealed within the film.
