and here are some key features for the essay:
Essays should be typed or word-processed (double spaced) Leave a margin ca. 1.5ins/3.8 cm wide on left. Number the pages consecutively.
2.Acknowledge in footnotes (please do not use text notes) any sources you have used in your research. This is important, as it is through footnotes that the reader can follow and evaluate the progress of your research. All sources (published and unpublished) referenced in the footnotes should be included in a separate bibliography at the end of the essay. This should also include details of websites with the date of consultation. History of Art preferred referencing and formatting system is The Chicago Manual of Style. For more detailed information, please see the separate guideline documents regarding the formatting of footnotes and bibliography on the Moodle.
3.When using books to assist you in the preparation of essays, do not paraphrase. Quotations should always be in quotation marks, acknowledged in footnotes, and referred to by superior figures placed after the punctuation, thus: ‘…………………his classical style.’[ ]
4.Include illustrations (where possible) either among the text or after it but before the bibliography. Illustrations should be properly numbered (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.) and captioned
a.Artist’s name;
b.Title of work, underlined or in italics;
c.The medium;
d.The date if known (if approximate, indicate thus: c. 1500);
e.Its present location i.e. town and gallery or site;
f.Source of the image.
Students are advised that websites are not appropriate as the primary source for the preparation of undergraduate essays. Students who rely on websites exclusively will be penalised. Websites should only be used as a supplement to the recommended reading list of books and articles and to books and articles you have identified yourselves. A standard, reliable reference work that can be recommended is the Grove Dictionary of Art
A key point is that websites should not be the primary source used for the essay.
