Assessment Task 1: Written Critical Review
Introduction
You have watched the documentary about the vaginal mesh implants and
discussed the various points of view arising from the use of a particular
implantable device. The case was an example of a device that failed despite
being approved for clinical use by the relevant regulatory bodies. Evidence of
clinical trials was an essential part of the approval process
The task of this assignment is to critically review scientific and clinical
evidence (particularly the primary clinical evidence) relating to an
implantable medical device of your choice. Reports such as this, where a
scientific opinion is required, are used within the legal system to argue for or
against a case.
There are many implantable devices on the market, including pacemakers,
defibrillators, infusion pumps, and knee joint prostheses. In choosing the
device, ensure it satisfies the definition of a medical device (Lecture 1 notes).
If in doubt, ask your tutor.
You will prepare your written report that can be suitable for submission to the
Journal of Medical Devices. You can learn about the Journal here:

Marking Criteria and Submission Requirements:
Rubric to be posted in UTSOnline.
Your assignment must be submitted in UTSOnline via Turnitin portal.
Due date: 11:59 pm on 21st September 2018
You will be able to submit as many times as you want prior to the due date but
only the latest version will be assessed.
Any submission after the due date will be marked late and will begin to attract
penalty (see late submission below).
You will be able to see your originality score for each submission and make
corrections wherever necessary before the due date. (Be aware that Turnitin
may take 24 – 48 hrs to generate your originality score.)
After the due date, you will not be able to make any corrections.
Feedback
Should you wish to obtain feedback from your tutor, you can show your draft
paper to your tutor during the tutorial session in Week 7.
Late Submission
Late submissions within a week from the due date will receive a penalty of
10% deduction from the score for this task.
Late submissions received more than a week from the due date will receive a
penalty of 20% deduction from the score for this task.
Papers submitted more than two weeks from the due date will not be
accepted.
If you are unable to submit your critical review by the due date, you will be
need to produce appropriate documentary evidence (eg. medical certificate)
to avoid a penalty.
If you have an unexcused missed critical review, you will receive a zero mark
for this task.
