Multimodal Analysis essay

This assignment asks you to analyze the multimodal text available in the document entitled, TEXT FOR ESSAY II [available in Unit II/File/Canvas]. Your analysis should engage the text in a critical way responding to all the modes utilized in the text– words, visuals, and actions — by explaining how the text works to communicate a message and by posing an effective analytical thesis statement, which presents your judgement of the text’s argument. In your essay, make use of the documents, “Rhetorical Triangle” and “Tools for analyzing Visual media” to a) speak to the three axes of communication – the text, the author and the audience, and b) use vocabulary that will facilitate speaking about multimodal texts efficiently.

A successful multimodal analysis will provide:

• A careful and critical reading of the different modes used and the role and feature of each mode;
• An effective thesis statement (RWF 87), which presents your judgement of the text’s argument;
• A balance summary and analysis;
• Support for the thesis;
• Careful attention to academic language, grammar, and form

Getting started
Explore ideas for your multimodal analysis by asking questions such as:
What are the different modes used and what roles does each play within the text?
What are the features of each mode?
What is interesting, strange, or revealing about the text’s message and the way it is communicated?
What does it confirm about the text?
What underlying assumptions come to the surface when you closely analyze the text?
