Description of essay: Choose a well known film or television
series and do a close reading of one scene or sequence of a film (narrative structure, style, theme or motif).
Remember that the essay is not a critical review, it is not an evaluation of the film, but a description and a discussion of form and content of the chosen scene or sequence.
Length: The essay should be between 1,000 to 1,200 words. Write the word count on top of page 1.
Font and formatting: 12-point Times New Roman font, with standard margins, double-
spacing and no coversheet. Film titles should be italics, and the first time it is mentioned, include the director and release year in parentheses. Example: Rashomon (Akira Kurosawa, 1950).
Rubric
Language (spelling and grammar), length, and formatting will count for 10% of the grade. Check spelling and grammar, do not go under 1,000 or over 1,200 words.
Clarity of the writing and how the text is organized will count for 20% of the grade. Use an introduction, a main discussion, and a conclusion.
The technical analysis, detailed description and analysis of the formal properties of the scene or sequence (editing, sound, mise-en-scène etc.) will count for 40% of the grade.
The description and analysis of the content (characters, themes, motifs) will count for 30% of the grade.
