For the final assignment, students can choose an area of the world and analyse how the colonial system operated in that area and how the traces of the colonial system impact current events. This means taking one area of the world: the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Africa and outlining how imperialism and colonialism affected that region. Note that it is perfectly O.K to focus in on one country from your chosen region.

Things you can look at include:

1) What form colonialism/imperialism took there

2) What forms of politics or social organization occurred as a result

3) How the dynamics that occurred historically affect the country today

4) Whether conflicts persist today based on what happened historically

5) Whether relations between the country and the colonizer still persist and if so, in what form (It is O.K. to say that relations have deteriorated or are strained)

6) Whether colonial dynamics have contributed to the development of the country or to trends that will affect the country’s development negatively

7) Is this area subject to the new imperialism that Harvey talks about?

The marks awarded for this assignment are 100. Of those 100, 20 will go to the structure of the paper and the argument you make, 30 will go to the clarity of the colonial explanation and the use of the theories we have learned in class to explain colonial presence and dynamics, 30 will go to the way that you draw threads from the past into the present and 20 will go to overall creativity in the way you write the paper.

Please note that I am very willing to discuss ideas about the final paper and I will announce additional office hours for you in class.

All papers should have normal margins, 12 point font, a referencing system (I don’t mind what system you use provided you are consistent) and a bibliography.
