For this essay, you will choose a debate from the New York Times’ “Room for Debate” section, and you will fully explore the issue before stating your own conclusion. In this sense, your thesis statement will come at the end of the essay, and you use the body of the essay explaining how you get there.

Step Two: Enter the Conversation. The bulk of your essay will summarize the differing views on the position, respond to the positions, and reflect on what leads you to your own position.

Step Three: Your thesis. Your thesis (stance on the issue) will come at the end of the paper in your conclusion. Why do you ultimately take this position?

Step Four: Works Cited. Your essay should have a properly formatted MLA works cited page. At the very least it should include the entries from the “Room for Debate” website.

The essay should be 5-6 pages (not including your Works Cited). Although additional research is not required, if you do consult other sources, you should include them on your works cited page.
