FAITH AND CRITICAL REASON

News Article Review: Your assignment is to find an article from a reputable and trustworthy source which engages faith or religion in some way. It will be your job to analyze the article and make explicit the connections to faith that are implicit in the article. The range of topics can be quite broad and general, including articles about any world faith tradition, including but not limited to Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Paganism, Occultism, Atheism, Native traditions as well as more obscure traditions.

Step 1: Locate an article. You can look in local newspapers, magazines or journals. You may also use online news sources, but not Facebook! Online articles must be from a legitimate and recognized source, including websites from well-known newspapers or magazines, as well as online-only news outlets that maintain a high standard of journalistic integrity. If you have any doubts or questions about your source please ask if it is acceptable before submitting your review. You must give a full bibliographic reference to the article, including a website if you use an online article, in order that I may find it to confirm information.

Step 2: You must briefly summarize the article in one paragraph so that readers can understand the context without having to read the entire article for themselves. This will test your ability to identify and communicate the main points of the article. This should be the shortest part of your review.

Step 3: The main body of your review should engage the themes of the article in a critical and thoughtful analysis. You should be able to make connections between the article and questions of faith and religion, especially those that have already been raised in this class. Your main interest should be why this article reflects something important about faith for our current day. Why are questions of faith relevant for understanding the significance of this article? Or how does an understanding of faith allow one to interpret this article? What important aspects of faith or religion are being communicated in the article and why does it matter? This section should be approximately 2-3 paragraphs long and take up about a page and a half of your full review.

Step 4: Finally you should write a conclusion that summarizes the points which you made and their importance. This should likewise be only one paragraph long and should not present new information, but summarize and emphasize the most important aspects of what has already been said. You may indicate further questions that remain, which you think your readers might consider pondering, or that you are unable to answer yourself, but pose important queries of the article or themes.
