This paper will be done in three phases. First, watch the film “The Greatest Showman” While watching, consider the main
themes, the way in which gender, ability, and agency are depicted in the film, and examples of intersectionality. Second, do a close reading of an excerpt from Eli Clare’s “Freaks and
Queers”. What does Clare tell us about gender, ability, and agency? Finally, write a paper making an argument about how these two sources compare to one another.
Ask yourself how they compare in terms of an argument about the ways in which the subjects
are represented, explored, and explained. You should back up your argument with specific
examples from the text and film.
