Topics:
Choose from the following topics: poverty/unemployment; juvenile offender rehabilitation; racial
discrimination; transgender discrimination; gender pay inequality; public education reform; or healthcare
inequality.
Utilize one sociological theory from your textbook to help prepare an informative analysis of your
social issue. Those theories are Symbolic Interaction; Functional Analysis; and Conflict Theory or
Feminist Theory.
What to write on your topic:
I. Introduction: Provide a topic description – How would you define the social issue or challenge? Why
did you choose this topic? Why it is important?
II. Background of Social Issue: What are the current statistics on this topic? Who is
impacted? (national/local research
III. Applying a Sociological framework: Why is it important to be able to address the problems
associated with this issue from a sociological perspective? (textbook/research/your OWN understanding)
IV. Theoretical Analysis: Which theory do you believe provides an appropriate analysis of the issue?
(from your textbook)
V. Research: What three articles, books, magazines, journals will you include as a citation? (Examples
can come from newspaper articles, scholarly journals, books, sociology textbooks, online news sites like
CNN, FOX, MSNBC, NPR etc.). IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CITE EACH REFERENCE IN YOUR
PAPER AND LIST EVERY REFERENCE ON PAGE FIVE OF YOUR PAPER FOR FULL CREDIT.
