For this Analysis, you will explore an advertisement through the lens of the theory of semiotics.

You will turn in a written report of approximately three, double-spaced pages that includes a digitalized image of the print advertisement itself. (I will attach image).

Once you have your analysis artifact, dissect the image using the tenets of semiotics. Find important signs, and begin coming to terms with the signs’ connotations. As you find more and more important signs, you’ll begin to notice an overall theme (i.e., the myth).

Begin your written report with the full APA citation for the publication that contains your advertisement.

Next, create a bullet-point list of the signs you find most important for the ad. List the sign, then give some thoughts about the connotation/signification of the sign. Basically, you will list the signifiers as well as the signifieds.

Follow your bulleted list up with some reflections on your findings. We are, essentially, answering the “so what?” question here. In approximately two more pages, address the following questions:

What is the myth that your advertisement conveys?

How does this advertisement fit into the larger culture?

Does it challenge a popular ideology or maintain a dominant point of view?

What, if any, is the danger associated with the promotion of your found myth?

Discuss how analyzing media with semiotics could help you in your chosen discipline/field (interior design).

Add your print advertising image to your written report so it’s clearly featured in your submission.

Save your work as a Word file.
