Casablanca Film Response

Classical Hollywood Cinema (CHC) is also known as “invisible” film style. Roughly speaking, the invisibility of the film style here indicates a spatiotemporal and dramatic continuity generated by a particular utilization of mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing. The aim of this film style is to draw attention to the story rather than the way in which the story gets told. By the same token, the spectators are prevented from realizing the presence of camera, the use of editing, the fabricated quality of film, and they view the film as if the reality itself is uninterruptedly unfolding before their eyes. Casablanca is one of the outstanding examples of CHC. Please discuss how the film produces an invisible film style through editing, cinematography and mise-en-scene. Please do not analyze the acting style and the use of music.

In order to write a coherent film response, you should construct at least two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, you are expected to explain your claims about the film. In the second paragraph, you should show that the film evidences your claims. In other words, you should not simply write that this or that film utilizes the understanding of this or that cinematographic/dramatic approach without providing the analysis of the stylistic/dramatic qualities of at least one scene from the film. Needless to say, the scene(s) that you analyze should, in turn, support your overall suggestions about the film. You are expected to write at least 500 words.
