Critiquing Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies

Select a health topic of interest to you that is relevant to your current area of practice. The topic may be your Course Portfolio Project or a different topic of your choice.
Using the Walden Library, locate two articles in scholarly journals that deal with your portfolio topic: 1) Select one article that utilizes a quantitative research design and 2) select a second article that utilizes either a qualitative OR a mixed methods design. These need to be single studies not systematic or integrative reviews (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). You may use research articles from your reference list. If you cannot find these two types of research on your portfolio topic, you may choose another topic.
Locate the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to access the appropriate templates, which will guide your critique of each article:
Critique Template for a Qualitative Study
Critique Template for a Quantitative Study
Critique Template for a Mixed-Methods Study
Consider the fields in the templates as you review the information in each article. Begin to draft a paper in which you analyze the two research approaches as indicated below. Reflect on the overall value of both quantitative and qualitative research. If someone were to say to you, “Qualitative research is not real science,” how would you respond?
To complete this Assignment:

Complete the two critiques using the appropriate templates.
Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
Contrast the types of information that you gained from examining the two different research approaches in the articles that you selected.
Describe the general advantages and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles. Use examples from the articles for support.
Formulate a response to the claim that qualitative research is not real science. Highlight the general insights that both quantitative and qualitative studies can provide to researchers. Support your response with references to the Learning Resources and other credible sources.

decision probabilities

Decision Probabilities
This week, we explored the knowledge component of the DIKW model. Concepts included:

foundations of knowledge,
the impact of patterns and contexts on knowing, and
the role of probabilities in decision making,
the application of knowledge to finding evidence for practice, benchmarking, and compliance reporting.
Select one of these concepts for further consideration. Relate how you, as an INS in a clinical setting, would help nursing colleagues effectively apply a sub-concept from the selected area to their practice.

Share your thoughts on how your understanding of the relationships of the DIKW concepts with information management have changed, drawing on your readings and the lessons. Share insights on how what you have learned impacts your knowledge and skills in nursing informatics and your sense of becoming an informatician. Justify how you met each of the course outcomes through the different activities you completed. How might you apply your learning in this course as you move forward (creative thinking welcomed)?

Safeguarding older adult

This is a reflective essay involving a safeguarding issue witnessed while on placement. So the safeguarding issue was regarding an 88years old lady living in a nursing home had repeated fall over the last two months
Current hospital admission was her having pneumothorax air in the lungs and the doctors believed that this was due to her repeated falls and not a new fracture
So a safeguarding issue was raised against the nursing home ( neglect of duty) because no proper assessment was done for her, no fall care assessment, she was not referred to any doctor or medication review
Driscoll model of reflection should be used and also policies on safeguarding, the care act should also be used

Is Haldol or Benzodiazepine the safest treatment for Acute Psychosis in the Emergency Room for adults compared to other medication options over six months?

This is a continuation of the Course Project presented in Week 2. Before you begin, review the Course Project Overview document located in the Week 2 Resources area.
The literature review is a critical piece in the research process because it helps a researcher determine what is currently known about a topic and identify gaps or further questions. Conducting a thorough literature review can be a time-consuming process, but the effort helps establish the foundation for everything that will follow. For this part of your Course Project, you will conduct a brief literature review to find information on the question you developed in Week 2. This will provide you with experience in searching databases and identifying applicable resources.
To prepare:
Review the information in Chapter 5 of the course text, focusing on the steps for conducting a literature review and for compiling your findings.
Using the question you selected in your Week 2 Project (Part 1 of the Course Project), locate 5 or more full-text research articles that are relevant to your PICOT question. Include at least 1 systematic review and 1 integrative review if possible. Use the search tools and techniques mentioned in your readings this week to enhance the comprehensiveness and objectivity of your review. You may gather these articles from any appropriate source, but make sure at least 3 of these articles are available as full-text versions through Walden Library’s databases.
Read through the articles carefully. Eliminate studies that are not appropriate and add others to your list as needed. Although you may include more, you are expected to include a minimum of five articles. Complete a literature review summary table using the Literature Review Summary Table Template located in this week’s Learning Resources.
Prepare to summarize and synthesize the literature using the information on writing a literature review found in Chapter 5 of the course text.
To complete:
Write a 3- to 4-page literature review that includes the following:
A synthesis of what the studies reveal about the current state of knowledge on the question that you developed
Point out inconsistencies and contradictions in the literature and offer possible explanations for inconsistencies.
Preliminary conclusions on whether the evidence provides strong support for a change in practice or whether further research is needed to adequately address your inquiry
Your literature review summary table with all references formatted in correct APA style

What should colleges teach

Write an essay in which you analyze the various arguments perspectives—and weigh in—on the debate over whether writers should use they own English or what colleges should teach when it comes to writing.

Required Texts
You must use both of the following texts:

“What Should Colleges Teach?” (Stanley Fish) AND
“Should Writers Use They Own English?” (Vershawn Ashanti Young).

Required Elements
Include several quotations from each reading in your essay, using the methods described in the hand-out QUOTING OTHERS (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Also see RULES FOR QUOTATIONS AND MORE.
Include a thesis at the end of the introduction:
Your thesis is your answer to the central question: should writers use their own English (at home, at school, in the workplace)?
Tie each body paragraph to your thesis somewhere in the paragraph:
Especially if you agree with Young, you are encouraged to include some of your own dialect in (only) one paragraph of your discussion.
Include a Works Cited: Basic Format
Length: 3-4 pages plus Works Cited.

Introduction: your job is to situate the reader
topic of the essay—what is the question, concern, problem?
introduce the article/s and author/s
author’s full name and credentials (very briefly)
title of article in quotation marks
what do these experts say about the problem—or how do they state the problem?
quote them, briefly
thesis statement at the end of the introduction
this may grow during the process of writing the essay
Body Paragraphs
OPTION: you may choose to follow the sequence of discussion of one of the articles, bringing the other articles into the discussion, as well as your own knowledge, experience, observations, thinking, etc.
ANOTHER OPTION: you may want to look at each source and see how each source answers the question (what should composition teachers teach?—or, should writers use they own English?) and whether you agree or disagree, and why.
Possibilities
CREATE A SIMPLE PLAN OR USE THIS POSSIBLE PLAN—simplified, divided into parts:
What does Fish say the problem with college writing/writing classes is? And what is his remedy?
What does Young say the real problem is? And what does he think should happen instead?
How do the other writers support or oppose Fish or Young?
What do I think?
USE QUOTATIONS
Introduce each writer as you go to quote them for the first time, along with their credentials, and the text they have written:
EXAMPLE: Cultural critic and author James Baldwin provides even more evidence of the power structure Young refers to, delineating the history of dialects in this country in “If Black English Ain’t English, Then Tell Me—What Is?” . . .
INCLUDE YOUR OWN REASONING, EXPERIENCE, OBSERVATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ETC.
My own experience in writing classes has taught me that . . .
Conclusion

what social factors contribute to homelessness among veterans

Begin with a QUESTION about a concept from any chapter that interests you. The research question is your blueprint for your research. Find five peer-reviewed articles that help you answer your question. Read and analyze each article. Include the complete reference citation – using APA format – for each article. Next, in a paragraph, summarize the information in each article. Explain how it answers your question. Your focus should be on the reference citations/bibliography and your five summaries. Then, provide a brief analysis that combines all of the information to answer your research question. This section should be labeled – reflective analysis. It is a synthesis or summary of your findings with NO personal opinion. The self application section should say why you asked your question. This is the only section where you can say what you think.

DO NOT WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER!
