In this activity you’ll examine six sources that explore the concept of democracy, and then write a synthesis essay. Your essay should be two to four single-spaced pages.

Democracy is government by the people, usually through elected representatives. In today’s world, democracy is the most popular form of government, yet, since its modern inception in eighteenth century America, many have questioned the value and success of democracy. What is the value and purpose of democracy? Is it merely an ideal that can never be realized? Are governments that call themselves democratic truly democratic?

Before you read the sources, reflect on your own prior knowledge and opinions regarding the success of democracy. Then, read the following sources carefully (including any introductory information), making sure to take notes on your interpretations, questions, and reactions to the excerpts as you read. Some questions to consider while reading:

• What do these passages have in common?
• How many main ideas do these sources explore? And what are these ideas?
• What contradictions, if any, are apparent in these sources?
• How many sources will I use in my essay?
• How will I cite these sources in my essay?
• How will I synthesize these sources into a coherent argument?

In an essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that democracy has succeeded in modern society.

To begin your essay, create a thesis statement that states your position on the effectiveness of democracy, and come up with two to four reasons that you will use to uphold this position. Remember that your evidence can be your own opinion (supported with concrete detail) and material from the six sources.

The body of your essay should include paragraphs that support your position. At least three sources must be cited in the essay, and you should reinforce your opinions with concrete details. You may refer to the sources by their titles (Source A, Source B, etc.), or by the descriptions in parentheses.

Again, remember to use the sources to support your position. Do not focus your essay on paraphrasing or summarizing the sources.

You are tasked with developing a research study that explores a current issue in the field of criminal justice. You will detail your study in a research report covering the major steps outlined below.
The research report consists of four parts:
1. Part 1 – Research topic, research questions, and research design
2. Part 2 – Literature review
3. Part 3 – Research methodology
4. Part 4 – Discussion and conclusion
Part 1A: Research Topic
First, you will identify a criminal justice related topic that you want to explore. Second, provide a brief discussion about why you chose your topic and why researching that topic is important to the field of criminal justice. Third, to assist you in determining the type of research that has already been done on your topic and to give you a head start on Part 2 of your research report, you will need to include a list of five scholarly sources related to your topic.
Note: You are not required to summarize the sources here, but the references must be cited in APA format.
Part 1B: Research Question
Developing a research question is one of the most important parts of the research study. Your research question is what dictates the type of methodology that will be used in the study. There are certain research questions that lend themselves to pure (basic) versus applied research. There are certain research questions that lend themselves to qualitative versus quantitative research. Therefore, it is imperative that you establish the research question prior to conducting a study. This is important as you are formulating your steps to solve the problem in your empirical research. It should also be noted here that if one is asking qualitative type research questions, answers might not result. Instead, additional questions or sub-questions may result, which is an acceptable result.
Note: You are not discouraged from using either type of question. Instead, you are reminded as discussed in the textbook that various types of questions exist and that the type of question you use will impact your methodology. This is why it is imperative that you identify the type of research question you want to ask at the beginning of your study.
For this part of the assignment, you are tasked with developing a research question. Based on your research question, you will need to generate at least one hypothesis or at least one sub-question that is associated with your research question.
Keep in mind that the research question needs to be connected to the topic that you identified in Part 1A of the assignment, and it needs to be a question that you want to explore throughout the other parts of this assignment and subsequent assignments related to the final research report.

You will need to decide whether your research will use an experimental design, a quasi-experimental design, or a preexperimental design. Provide a discussion that explains how your research falls into the experimental design that you chose. While you do not need to go into specifics about the methodology that you will utilize for your research study, you do need to be able to discuss to what extent your design will or will not incorporate equivalents, observation, treatment, and time.
All three parts of the assignment allow you to begin formulating your research design steps as you are building your research report. The three parts of the assignment should be submitted as one document.

Students should select a person in one of the three adult life span stages that he or she is familiar enough with that many of this information would be common knowledge already. An example would be a family member, a child of a close friend or relative, or a well known public figure. The person should be a different adulthood stage from the UWA student. This will allow the student to discuss the six areas of development through general knowledge of the person and through any additional observation needed.

As this review is based on what is probably innate knowledge through natural association, it is not necessary to interview or get any paperwork signed by the adult that the student is describing. No name or initials of the person should be included – just refer to the person as “This person.”

An example format is provided with which the student should take the example and type in their own information on the title page, after section headings, and on the reference page for references used besides the course textbook workbook. A grading rubric is provided with this assignment in Blackboard and a completed rubric will be provided by the instructor with the student’s grade. Find Five academic sources (journal, book chapter, book) that are about your issue in your chosen medium/format (for example, race in television or love in film).

Write a one-page (double-spaced) analysis of each source. The summary should:You will be graded on the quality/relevance of your source selection, your ability to identify and summarize the main argument of each source, and your ability to make connections between the sources.

Identify and summarize the overall argument of the piece.
Make connections/comparisons/contrasts between the source and your other sources in order to put them in conversation with each other.
