Midterm Essay

The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
Casablanca (1941)
The Bridge Over The River Kwai (1957)
My Fair Lady (1964)
Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977)
Indiana Jones and the Raiders Of the Lost Ark (1981)
Toy Story I (1995)
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
Select and watch one film from the proceeding list.

Write a 2,250-word essay in which you locate Jungian archetypes: the self, the ego, the shadow, the persona, the anima/animus, the hero, and the pattern of the hero’s journey.

This essay is not about the film, as much as it is about Jungian archetypes. Feel free to incorporate anything else we covered in the first half of the semester (Modules 1–6) if those ideas come up in viewing the film.

I know these films very well, so I do not want a synopsis. Instead, write about archetypal concepts and how those concepts relate to the film. What archetypes do the characters in the film represent? What do they tell you about the human psyche?

For instance, how is the shadow archetype represented and how does it operate? What is its relationship to other archetypes in the film, like the relationship between the hero (ego) and the villain (shadow)? If there is more than one shadow, or more than one hero, how do these character differ and why are they necessary.

Does the plot follow the hero’s journey perfectly or are there differences? If there are places where the plot veers away from the hero’s journey, what changes about the storyline or archetypes?

Advertising Money

Prompt: A firm recently spent $100 on Google AdWords and generated 100 extra visits to the firm’s website, 5 of which resulted in a purchase. To pay for the change, they dropped the banner advertising on ESPN.com saving $1000, which also reduced the number of visits to their website by 500 and 20 fewer sales. Sales from visitors from ESPN.com were on average 25% higher than sales from visitors from Google AdWords. Maximize Wealth

Conduct your own research on how to maximize wealth. Also read the article posted to the Announcement section of World Class titled, “How To Invest In Businesses With Hidden Value Assets”. Other articles related to finding hidden value are posted to Announcements. Start your analysis using your primary company’s GAAP balance sheet assets but then start thinking about how several of the asset line items might contain significant hidden value. This is a critical thinking discussion that requires you to think out of the box.
Requirements include:
1. Evaluate the GAAP assets listed in the SEC.gov 10K for your primary company. If you are using a privately held company or non-profit, you are more than welcome to use a publicly traded company of your choice to conduct your research. Just make sure to explain why you selected the company.
2. The 10K Notes to Financials will likely discuss your primary company’s GAAP assets that will allow you to focus on AT LEAST TWO line items. However, you must guess potential hidden value by using your research. There are many online tools that can assist you in finding guesstimate asset values on a balance sheet.
3. Of all the assets contained in your company’s balance sheet, select two and explain the current base GAAP value. At this point, apply the lessons learned from your readings to provide and support the guesstimate hidden value for each asset. If you use the WAG (Wild A** Guess) approach, you will need to provide enough reasons to justify the valuations. That guess will not come from the 10K balances or notes, just your critical thinking, business knowledge, and research.

A Traded Company

1. Please tell us the name of the publicly traded company and industry peer and the trading symbols. Share the reasons why you selected the company for your final project. Was the auditor’s 10K opinion for your primary company qualified or unqualified (find the auditor’s statement in the most recent SEC.gov 10K), is the company entangled in a major lawsuit (check the notes to financials), and how much did the CEO make in FY2017 (last couple of pages in the notes to financials or in the Proxy filing)?
2. What are the SIC and NAICS industry codes for your primary company? SIC (Standard Industry Classification) and NAICS (North American Industry Classification Standard). (search engine)
3. Now that you have started to investigate the publicly traded company chosen for the final project, what are two outstanding products or services that your company produces or does that sets it apart and above all competitors (the AHAs)? Please provide sufficient detail so your classmates can respond to your analysis. (personal knowledge, search engine, or FYE 2017 10K)
4. Review your primary company’s statement of cash flows. Let us know if your company is maintaining a positive cash flow position (tell us the amount) and which line item increased or decreased the most from FYE 2016 to FYE 2017. (FYE 2017 10K)
5. Finally, let us know the stock exchange your company is traded on, current price per share, if it pays a dividend, and its current P/E (price earnings ratio). (Use a search engine for current data)
