Critique Guidelines Handout

Critique Guidelines:

• Minimum 1000 words/Maximum 1500 words, double spaced, 12-point font. Less than 1000 words (yes, even having 999 words) will result in the critique not being graded, and receiving a zero on the assignment.
• Put your name, ID Number, class name and play attended on the first page, top right.

 

This is a critique of the performance you attended. Using paper space to write your experience arriving at the theatre, historical research on the play, the weather the day of the play, how cold it was in the theatre, or other extraneous information will lower your grade. Additionally, an overlong introductory and/or concluding paragraph, or a re-telling of the plot/story will lower your grade. Your grade doesn’t depend on if you liked or disliked the production. You will be graded on the depth of your observations and on how well you communicate and support your opinions.

 

What is most important in this critique is that in your explanation of the performance you explain WHY you have the opinion you do about a certain production element. To say: “The acting stunk” is not acceptable. Explain to me WHY you think the acting stunk, or the set was great, or the sound design didn’t work. Lack of well-thought out and articulated explanations will lower your grade.

 

 

In writing your critique, answer these questions in essay form:

1. What was the theme of the play? Did you agree with the play’s message? Why or why not?
2. Who are the protagonist and antagonist and what are their motivations/goals in the play? Did their motivations/goals make sense to you given the theme of the play? Why or why not?
3. What was the primary conflict between the protagonist and antagonist?
4. Who was the best actor? Why?
5. Who was the worst actor? Why?
6. How did the play’s set contribute to your understanding of the play’s story, characters and theme? Did the play’s set help or hinder your understanding of story, characters, and theme? Explain your answer.
7. How did the play’s costumes contribute to your understanding of the play’s story, characters and theme? Did the play’s costumes help or hinder your understanding of story, characters, and theme? Explain your answer.
8. How did the play’s lighting contribute to your understanding of the play’s story, characters and theme? Did the play’s costumes help or hinder your understanding of story, characters, and theme? Explain your answer.
9. How did the play’s sound/score contribute to your understanding of the play’s story, characters and theme? Did the play’s sound/score help or hinder your understanding of story, characters, and theme? Explain your answer.

Play Money Paper (3–5 pages)
Pretend that you have $10,000 to invest for four weeks. You are to “invest” this money in stocks or mutual funds and to track your investments on a weekly basis for four weeks (see schedule for due date). Pick five different stocks or funds to follow.

Some points you can use are Nigeria and south Sudan are cited frequently as four of the world’s current famines. How many

Every paper and presentation will be accompanied by an annotated bibliography. Five of the key references used to support statements made in the research paper should be analyzed in 200–300 words for its methods, its findings, its recommendations, and its generalizability, as appropriate.

For each paper, the grade will be derived from the following:
The annotated bibliography of five references that inform the presentation (35%). The content (accuracy, organization, comprehensibility) (50%). The quality of writing (including proofreading), organization, presentation, and analysis

Coursework Question
In Re Harvard Securities Ltd [1998] B.C.C. 567 (Ch), 578 Neuberger J states:
In all the circumstances, therefore, it seems to me that the correct way for me, at first instance, to explain the difference between the result in Hunter, and that in Wait , London Wine and Goldcorp , is on the ground that Hunter was concerned with shares, as opposed to chattels. Taking account of primary (principally, cases) and secondary (academic authorities) sources, critically analyse and assess Neuberger J’s statement.
TIP: Do not merely describe. Don’t just tell what the law is. Play the legal academic/judge. Do we understand the rationale for the different treatment? Is it rigorous, consistent? Fungibility? Interchangeable things, etc vs wine…the wine was seperated or ascertained. They remove the bottles from general stock.
Use more cases rather than less. Remember It’s not about opinion. Heavy footnotes expected. Recognise obiter.

You must include footnotes, a bibliography of relevant sources consulted, and lists of the statutes and cases referred to in your answer. Your footnotes should comprise citation references only and should not contain additional argument – any argument included in footnotes will be disregarded. The word limit refers to the main body of the coursework and does not include front cover, title page, contents page, footnotes, bibliography or lists of statutes and cases.

Mitosis and meiosis are important biological processes that are commonly confused. Write a one-two page essay that compares these two processes. Your answer should also include a description of the role each process plays in the life of an organism, and should specifically address how ploidy is affected in each process. Additionally, terms you may wish to incorporate (but are not limited to) in your essay include independent assortment and crossing over.

Your essay must be typed, 1.5 spaced, in 12-point font. Please follow the guidelines for writing an argument paper. You can find these by searching for “argument paper” in Writer’s Help 2.0.

You will need to use properly cited references. Wikipedia and other tertiary sources are not acceptable sources. You may use properly cited secondary sources (e.g., textbooks). Quotations are not used in scientific writing; you must paraphrase and cite the sources you are paraphrasing from. You will lose points for using quotations. Reference lists and in-text citations must follow CSE (Council of Science Editors) guidelines.

For this project, you will choose a local or global issue that pertains to technology. The chosen issue should also relate to one or more of the topics that have
been addressed in this course (technologies’ influence on relationships, policies and regulations, identity, gender, health, social class, etc.). ). Some examples of
broad issues within these topics can be located here. In this presentation, you will explain a chosen issue and how it pertains to technology and provide a plan of
action for addressing this issue. This plan includes recommendations for improvements as well as strategies and a plan for implementing the recommendations.
You will develop your plan as a multimedia presentation that includes an oral narration component. This oral component should be a recorded oral narration
that accompanies your multimedia presentation. You will be required to provide written speaker notes that correspond with your presentation in a separate
Word document. Be sure to support your answers with appropriate evidence.
