Information and introduction about  the Course

Memory, Meaning and History is one of  History Masters modules in which challenges you to explore how historians can understand the past by investigating cross-cutting themes. In the late 20th century, memory started to become a key concept for cultural historians, taking the study of History through what is often referred to as ‘the mnemonic turn’. Memory Studies is now a fully-fledged and interdisciplinary field with its own historiography and a wealth of insights and controversies for anyone who is interested in how humans remember and make sense of the past, taking in not only the memories of the living and the acts of commemoration (and forgetting) that mark the present, but also the question of what historians can know today about memory in the more distant past. Whatever your own specialism, this module will help you situate your interests in debates that range across periods, encouraging you to frame your research in more conceptually ambitious contexts and understand the strengths and limitations of the ‘mnemonic turn’.

Important Notes:

  • Do not forget to write footnotes.
  • Please connect the book with at least one of the module blocks.
  • Please do contact me if you have any question.

Thank you very much.

Aging in Correctional System

Each student will write a research paper examining a specific criminal justice related topic. The paper is to be scholarly in nature (i.e., not a “reflection” paper). Students must utilize at least 19 sources, 12 of which are peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. Direct quotations should be used sparingly; however, students may paraphrase material. Paraphrasing still requires proper APA citations. Students are not permitted to reuse any course work from a previous or current course for the purposes of this paper.
General Formatting Requirements
1. A cover page
2. Running Head (upper left-hand corner of the header)
3. Page numbering (upper right-hand corner of the header)
4. 1” margins on all sides
5. Strict double-spacing (no additional space before or after each line – check paragraph settings)
6. Times New Roman, 12 point font throughout your entire paper – cover page through references
7. All text (with the exception of headings within the body of the paper) should be left-justified (i.e., do not “Justify” the text of your paper as the spacing will be off).
8. Written in formal English, with college-level writing mechanics and APA-style formatting, inclusive of in-text citations and references
General Paper Structure: The structure the paper will include four main sections.
I. Introduction
A. Introduce specific topic to be analyzed
B. Provide any relevant historical information pertaining to the respective issue(s), theory (or theories) and policy.
C. Thesis statement – The thesis statement should be a concise and declarative statement illustrating your assessment of the issue (i.e., what you have to say about your chosen topic, what is your position?)
D. Briefly describe your plan of action to analyze your chosen topic, and underscore your thesis (i.e., lay out a “road map” for the reader).
CJ498 2
II. Literature Review (The following describes an integrated literature review)
A. Introduction to your literature review (expand on your “roadmap” statement)

B. Develop subtopics based on your paper topic (about 3). Under each subtopic, provide an in depth analysis of your chosen topic, identified in the introduction, utilizing information garnered from scholarly sources, combined with your own original thoughts (i.e., critical analysis).
1. Summarize prior research
2. Critique prior research
3. Present pertinent conclusions (in brief) – more substantive conclusions will be addressed in Part IV of your paper
C. Provide a summary (i.e., highlights from your literature review) that will naturally lead into your Discussion.

A. Summarize your assessment of the issue (i.e., chosen topic); the utility of existing theory and data; and the efficacy or futility of current policy in place to address the issue.
B. Reference back to substantive examples from your sources
IV. Conclusion
A. Provide your concluding thoughts on:
1. What policy changes need to be made, and what the implications of those changes might mean with respect to better addressing the issue
2. Future research needs
V. References (APA-style references for all scholarly sources used in your paper)

this paper is about aging throughout the correctional system, and why. What are we doing?
I attached an annotated bibliography that might help.
What are we doing with older inmates? who is caring for them? what about inmates who develop alzheimers? how did three strikes laws and other policies make this situation come to fruition? What can we do now? History on lengthy sentences and mass incarceration- history on aging in corrections. Your own ideas are welcome, what is relevant?
are prisons the new hospice care system? I also included an example of my topic proposal.

Why College Should or Shouldn’t be free

This paper is a Rhetorical Analysis. My professor has emphasized that this shouldn’t be a summary of content, but a analysis and comparative strategies of the two articles chosen on a given topic. Highlighting rhetorical strategies is a must.
Content may be used to provide context on what you are evaluating (every analysis you make must be supported with evidence and cited in the actual line of the essay and work cited).
I have attached the Rhetorical Analysis WS that will be referenced in the instructions. This WS must be used in the body’s of the paragraph. The thesis statement must be clear and concise about rhetorical strategies used and not about which article I agree with more, no summaries. Feel free to provide background information on both authors to show how that influences their writing. Logos, Pathos, and Ethos must be used in the paper. I must include paragraphs about what each article did well and what they did not so well. A few questions my professor mentioned would be good for the conclusion are, What questions arose from reading the article? If you wrote another paper on the same topic what would you write? What is missing? How can you make that argument in the first place?
Key Notes: My professor likes to us this definition of rhetoric: The good man speaking well(Quintilian). Also, seeing the available means of persuasion (Aristotle).

I have more details about the formatting of the page should you choose to complete this paper.

Below I have attached the two articles for this topic, however, feel free to change the topic or use different articles that best suites your writing style.
Thanks!

Should College Be Free? (And Proposals to Make It Happen)

Why Free College is a Bad Idea

Latest revision comment3/7/2019 11:50 AM: The paper is not 3 pages which is what I was charged for. I said that the paper has to identify logos, pathos, and ethos. I gave detail instructions along with all the added worksheets required(which I will upload again). This paper is not what I requested. I need a revision by This person didn’t follow any of the instructions I gave. I specifically asked for him to analyze rhetorical strategies not the whether or not the author’s opinion on the subject but how they argued the subject. Also, don’t add anything extra like a title, a paragraph saying this paper will be about and the links to the articles. The previous writer used those fillers to count toward the 3 pages and once I took them out it as barely 3 pages.
