Short Essay Question
Choose one of the topics below. Address in a clear, concise, and orderly essay (300–400 words).
1. Briefly state Antigone’s justifications for her actions. Then make the best case you can for Creon’s position, drawing arguments from the text of the play.
2. Summarize the debate between the Milesians and the Athenian generals in Thucydides’s Peloponnesian Wars. What is the place of appeals to honor or reputation in this debate? Is the Athenian position completely consistent?
All essays should reflect careful attention to the course materials (original sources and commentary lessons). The point is not to state your feelings, impressions, or opinions, but to demonstrate knowledge of the course materials and to engage them intelligently. A clear and careful statement of the argument of the text(s) you are responding to is the first priority. Of course your opinions will be reflected in your writing, but your aim should be to demonstrate your understanding of the sources and your capacity to engage their arguments.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which the student addresses the following three (3) items using headers to separate each response:

Congressional Ethics: Identify one (1) member of Congress who has been charged with ethics violations in the past 2 years (include the date). Briefly discuss the reason for the charges and provide two (2) reasons why you agree or disagree with the verdict and any penalties. Provide examples to support your answer. Consider how the verdict and penalties impacts your trust of the members of Congress.
Third Party Candidates: Discuss two (2) political reasons why a third party candidate has never been successful in winning a presidential election. Provide examples to support the answer. Consider the political impact of the Republican and Democratic Party if a third party was successful.
Federal and State Authority: Identify one (1) current issue facing the United States today (from the past 6 months). Analyze the respective roles of federal and state authorities in addressing the issue. Determine whether the U.S. Constitution constrains the federal and state responses to the issue. Explain.
In your research, you cannot use Wikipedia, online dictionaries, Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, or any other website that does not qualify as an academic resource.

In your paper, you will apply ethical theories and perspectives to the issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts, aiming to be both balanced and intellectually driven in your work. You may share your personal views, but do not rely on opinions (yours or those offered by others) to make your case. Think about the evidence that helps to make your case and use it.

The Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act (FISA) and the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001 are controversial topics. The events of September 11, 2001 brought reality to the terrorist threat to the United States. As a result, new, relevant procedures and tactics must be implemented to protect and prevent terrorism in the homeland. FISA and the Patriot Act are two solutions to the terrorism threat.
