Write a 5-6 page paper on how reading Locke and Equiano give us a unique sense of the Enlightement
Conceptually the paper should address the following prompt: (50% of your grade)
John Locke and Olaudah Equiano lived and wrote approximately a century apart and in some ways represent bookends of the Enlightenment, both as a social and intellectual movement as well as a prelude to the Age of Revolutions at the end of the eighteenth century. What does a comparison of their texts tell you about the Enlightenment? Does it fit neatly within the traditional definition of the Enlightenment provided by Kant or the practice of Enlightenment as seen with Voltaire [lecture]? Why or why not? What social forces contributed to the intellectual changes of the Enlightenment?
Formally the paper should: (50% of your grade)
1) Cite and quote directly (with page numbers in footnotes) Locke and Equiano.
2) Have a strong thesis or argument at the beginning of the paper (first or second paragraph). This should not be descriptive or vague. It should address how and why Locke’s and Equiano’s texts reveal the nature of the Enlightenment.
3) Include footnotes in Chicago style, a title page and a bibliography (the title page and bibliography are not part of the page count). Chicago Style:

4) Read well in terms of style, grammar, etc. You should proofread your paper.
