Briefly describe how Durkheim and Simmel describe issues of human agency. Which of the approaches do you feel is the most realistic description of human agency in the social world? Write an essay in which you briefly describe human agency and then demonstrate, by direct reference to the theorists’ work, how much agency individual humans have in the theorists’ work.
Some advice:
1. Your thesis in this paper should be located in the introduction and it should be straightforward; “theorist X provides the most convincing description of human agency in social life…”
2. Think carefully about human agency and how the theorist deals with that. Remember, “human agency” is a modern term that none of our theorists used themselves, so don’t try to find their usage of those words. Instead, think through the theorists’ ideas and critically assess where human agency enters into their theories.
3. Summarize human agency in one paragraph after the introduction.
4. Your essay should then compare and contrast both Durkheim’s and Simmel’s perspectives on human agency; this will form the body of the essay.
5. An outline will help organize your thoughts so that the essay you write is a coherent whole.
