After reading Dr. Faustus, what are your thoughts on the ultimate fate of Dr. Faustus? Honestly, is what Faustus did really all that bad? To what extent does morality conflict with the pursuit of knowledge and power?

Please write a critical response based on these questions. Your paper should be 2-3 pages long (meaning at least 2 full pages), double-spaced, with 1” margins using Times New Roman 12 point font, and it should conform to the Critical Response Papers Rubric handed out in class and also available on Blackboard. Topic 2: Stigma Associated with Disease
Some vulnerable populations may have diseases, health impairments, and pregnancy that bring humiliation and predisposed judgment. Unfortunately, these health conditions can cause vulnerable populations to become ostracized by the general public.

Topic: Should High School students think about getting a college degree.

Your audience will be your classmates and you will propose the issue to them. Remember that your readers are likely to expect you to thoroughly explain the points you are making and to support those points with appropriate forms of evidence (you will need four outside sources, which you will find). Readers will also expect you to use a reasonable tone, to respect your readers and sources, and to avoid slang. They will also expect you to acknowledge and cite your sources. Use as many of the appeals in your argument as you can (appeals are Ethos, Logos, Pathos).

Requirements: Your essay should be between 4 – 4 ½ pages in length.
1) Your essay should introduce the issue you are addressing by providing appropriate context to the reader — e.g., an introduction that explains what the issue is and how your readers should view it.
2) Explain the issue and your argument carefully. Have a strong thesis statement that can be argued. Thesis statements cannot be in the form of a question.
3) Support your chosen argument with evidence (information from four outside sources. Use one or two quotes from each source).
4) Clearly document (following MLA style: using both in-text citations and Works Cited page). 5) Conclude with a “call to action” at the end of your essay (if needed).
6) Revise to clarify and strengthen your essay and edit to remove errors in spelling, grammar, and mechanics so that your writing is clear and readable.

Select one (1) topic from the list below and write an analytic essay on Michael
Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost. Your essay must contain an introduction with a clear argument
(thesis statement), body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. Your ideal
reader is someone who has read the text you are discussing but not recently. As such,
there is no need to summarize large stretches of plot. Instead, you must extract and
analyze specific textual details to make your interpretation clear to the reader.
The essay topics are places for you to begin your analysis, not to end it. The purpose of
an essay topic is to push you to arrive at your own interpretation of the literature.
Rather than treating the topic as a question you have to “answer,” you should use it as
the launch-point for your original analysis.
Evaluation
I will evaluate your essay according to four rubric categories:
1. Analysis and insight

4. Writing
This essay must be written using MLA style. Failure to use proper MLA style, or to
include a list of works cited, will result in penalties to your grade. Failure to meet the
required assignment length will also result in penalties to your grade.
Research Requirements
Outside research is not required for this essay. However, if an essay topic mentions a
scholar we have discussed in class, you are expected to engage with that scholar’s work
in your essay.
Submitting Assignments
Upload all written take-home assignments to the appropriate submissions folder on
iCollege. Late assignments will receive a 1% penalty for each day late (including
weekends) up to a maximum of seven days, after which the assignment will no longer
be accepted and will receive a grade of zero. Any assignment submitted after the start of
class on the due date will count as being late and thus receive a 1% late penalty. Late
assignments will not receive marginalia or final comments.

Essay Topics
1. Discuss at least three different factors that shape Anil’s perception of trauma in
Anil’s Ghost, such as her job (forensic pathologist), hybrid status (from Sri Lanka
but having spent many years abroad), and past (Cullis, Leaf, her parents, etc.).
Does Palipana offer a different perspective on the “truth” of trauma? Does
Sarath? How?
2. Examine the stories told in the “interchapters” (short passages, sometimes in
italics and not always focused on the novel’s main characters). How do these
interchapters add to our understanding of trauma? What kind (or kinds) of
knowledge do the interchapters convey that the “main” story doesn’t? You may
wish to include the author’s note and the epigraph in your analysis.
3. Apply Dori Laub and/or Veena Das’s ideas on how to work through (heal) from
trauma to Ananda’s experience, paying special attention to the novel’s use of
metaphor, imagery, and symbol. You may wish to compare and contrast Ananda
and Gamini in your analysis.
4. Explore the relationship between the representation of vision (sight, seeing, eyes,
etc.) and the different sides of the Sri Lankan civil war. Does the novel take a side
in the conflict? If so, which one, and how? What are the ethical implications for
the story? You must draw on the specific historical and/or cultural context for the
novel in your essay

Ratio Analysis. To this point, information conveyed by the financial statements has been used to develop a picture of the organizations fiscal status and financial operating results. As a next analytical step, generally accepted financial ratios will be calculated for the purpose of going beyond detail contained in the facility’s audited financial statements. The intent of this analysis is to gain additional detail about the fiscal status of the organization. To this end, the following area and ratios have been determined as well as their respective benchmarks:

Purpose of assignment: Our readings for this part of the course have introduced you to the concepts of environmental justice (EJ) and environmental racism (ER). Your understanding of these terms is foundational for you to critically examine present day environmental issues as this course moves forward. This essay provides you the opportunity to comminicate in a well organized and well written essay what your understanding of these concepts is (based on a multitude of texts). Consider the following questions:
● What is environmental justice? What are the histories, movements, ideas, legal cases that encompass environmental justice. Your paper should address a minimum of 2 specific responses to these questions.
● What is environmental racism? How is environmental racism manifested? What are the histories, policies and ideologies that underpin ER? Your paper should address a minimum of one specific response to these questions. 
In your analysis of EJ and ER you can also express any thoughts, questions, concerns or emotions that are emerging as result of learning these histories.

1 – “It’s not what you’re like but what you like that matters”. Discuss this line’s relevance to the movie or one of its major themes.

2 – While watching Marie play onstage, Rob, Barry & Dick think out loud: “I want to date a musician… to live with a musician: [they’d] write songs at home, ask me what I thought of ‘em, maybe even include one of our private little jokes [in the lyrics they’d write]”. 5 – “High fidelity” refers to a kind of sound quality where everything is crystal clear. How does this metaphor function throughout the movie?

6 – “What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands, of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?” Discuss this line’s relevance to the movie as a whole.
