Book Assignment

Book Selection:

Pick a book about a technology and its likely social impacts. This could be a book about a specific technology such as autonomous vehicles or pesticide use. The book you select must have a minimum of 150 pages. Assignments written about books that have fewer than 150 total pages (149 pages or less) will not be graded.

Book Assignment

Once you have selected a book about a technology you should read it and then write a paper having the following structure:

Part 1: Tombstone in point form (same as bulleted list) (10 points)

Please also note that you are not to collect any information directly from authors. I do not authorize such information gathering for this course. If you do collect information directly from an author and I become aware of it, your project will not be graded.

– Title; sub-title (if any)

– Author

– Publisher, Date of Publication

– How you obtained the book.

– Author’s background (including educational background…where and what the author studied)

– Important issues raised in the book.

Part 1 must be no longer than one page.

Part 2: Outline Structure of the Book in point form (bulleted list) (20 points)

Point form outline of the book’s sections and/or chapters. For each section and/or chapter, include a maximum of three entries that reveal the author’s main ideas presented in the section and/or chapter (one idea per entry). Part 2 must be no longer than 2 pages. You must stay within the page limit. For books with many chapters, it may be necessary to aggregate chapters in order to stay within the page limit. Do not meet the page limit by changing font size or line spacing.

Part 3: Connection with Kranzberg’s “Laws of Technology” (50 points)

Read the following article: Kranzberg Melvin “Technology and History: ‘Kranzberg’s Laws’” Bull. Sci. Tech. Soc. Vol 15, No. 1, pp. 5-13, 1995. You should also refer to the discussion of this paper presented in the September 6th lecture. Answer the following questions:

1. How does the book’s description of the technology fit with Kranzberg’s First Law?

2. How does the book’s description of the technology fit with Kranzberg’s Second Law?

3. How does the book’s description of the technology fit with Kranzberg’s Third Law?

4. Do you think that the book explicitly or implicitly fits a “technological determinism” view?

Part 3 must be between 3 and 4 pages (more than 3 full pages/less than 4 full pages).

Part 4: Organization/readability/editing/references (20 points)

Write the assignment clearly using paragraphs. Edit the assignment (to avoid spelling errors, for example). Any material you refer to or quote in the assignment must be given a reference (a separate reference page must be included as the last page of the assignment…after the last page of Part 3) and a citation in the body of the assignment that points to the reference. References/citations should be in a suitable format. This is important to avoid plagiarism that can carry severe penalties. The paper should be double-spaced throughout using an 11- or 12-point font (no mixed fonts). Any material in your assignment that is not accompanied by a citation and reference will not be graded.

Software Defined Networking, SDN

A private enterprise with HQ in Toronto, has sub-offices in many cities across the nation has recently changed ownership. The IT department is responsible for delivering networking services to a mixture of users: management, staff and guests and is bracing for 50% rise per year in network traffic/services over next two years. The new management who have inherited a dated infrastructure intend to modernize. A team of experts hired by senior management are of the view that a technology upgrade can help meet the needs of this growing setup and reduce costs. In order to educate the stake holders on the impact of emerging technologies on the future network upgrade, a small Task Force was set up who short listed the following four areas to understand and assess their impact:
1- Internet of Things
2- Network Function Virtualization , NFV
3- Software Defined Networking, SDN

Deliverable:
Select any ONE topic from the list above, and write, and submit up to a maximum of 10-pages (12 point font, space and half) exclusive of any diagrams / screen-shots, giving a technical overview of the technology selected to help IT staff understand the potential and features and the impact it is likely to have on network upgrade/design.

Grading Rubric:
Report [8 marks]
ANNOTATED bibliography at the end. [2 mark]

The final report format should include:
Course Title page should have:
1. Full student name and student ID
2. Research Assignment Title
3. Course Title
4. Date The report should follow the OACETT Technical Report Writing Guidelines (available on e-Centennial course folder).

you consider the process of data collection for both quantitative and qualitative research. You will examine the various approaches to data collection, how you can test the reliability and validity of your data, and the ethical considerations involved with collecting data.

Week 8: Data Collection
The clinic in which you work has used the same brand of hand soap and sanitizer for the past 10 years. Just recently, a salesperson called the office manager at the clinic and offered a compelling price on a new brand of soaps. The new soap meets industry standards; however, the office manager is concerned that the reduced cost will also mean an inferior product. As nurses must frequently wash their hands throughout the day, having high-quality soap is very important. The office manager has asked you to determine if the new brand of soap is of a lesser quality than the soap currently used. As you do not want to make this determination alone, you decide to get the other nurses involved in the evaluation process. How would you proceed? Would you have everyone try the new product or just selected individuals? How long will they use it? How will they provide feedback? Will you have a survey or face-to-face interviews? These are all types of questions that a researcher faces when he or she begins to plan for data collection.

This week, you consider the process of data collection for both quantitative and qualitative research. You will examine the various approaches to data collection, how you can test the reliability and validity of your data, and the ethical considerations involved with collecting data.

Discussion: Planning for Data Collection
Data collection is an important part of both quantitative and qualitative research. Although the actual approach to gathering information may vary, for either research design, researchers need to plan in advance how the data will be gathered, reported, and stored, and they need to ensure that their methods are both reliable and valid. As nurses review research when considering a new evidence-based practice, it is important to be familiar with sound collection practices in order to ascertain the credibility of the data presented.
Consider the following scenario:
Nurses and other health care professionals are often interested in assessing patient satisfaction with health care services. Imagine that you are a nurse working in a suburban primary care setting that serves 10,000 patients annually. Your organization is very interested in understanding the patient’s point of view to help determine areas of care that can be improved. With this focus in mind, consider how you would create a survey to assess patient satisfaction with the services your organization provides. You may wish to consider variables such as the ease of accessing care, patient wait time, friendliness of the staff, or the likelihood that a patient would recommend your organization to others.
For this Discussion, you generate questions and an overall plan for data collection that would be appropriate for a patient satisfaction survey in relation to the above scenario.
To prepare:
Consider the guidelines for generating questions presented in this week’s Learning Resources.
Review the scenario and formulate at least five questions that you could use to evaluate patient satisfaction.
Reflect on the different methods or instruments that can be used for gathering data described in Chapter 13 and Chapter 23 of the course text.
Which methods or instruments would work well for the scenario? Determine an appropriate sample size for the scenario.
By Day 3
Post the questions that you created for gathering information about patient satisfaction based on the above scenario. Explain which method or instrument you would use to gather data. Describe the sample size appropriate for the population and how you would select participants. Provide a rationale for your choices, and explain how you can ensure high standard of reliability and validity.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
