Paper Writing Guideline for HUM 2020: Introduction to Humanities

The student will write a 5-6 page research paper on any topic dealing with the Humanities. The topic is open-ended and may be whatever the student chooses upon approval by the instructor; however, students need to ensure it is academic and not current event-related. Some possible examples include:

*a biographical paper (research a political figure, artist, musician, philosopher, etc. and discuss his or her contributions to the Humanities.)

*an analytical paper (develop a topic in an open-ended question format. Present multi-faceted information and offer a well-supported critical analysis in a neutral stance.)

*an argumentative paper (state a topic you wish to explore and establish a position to argue in the thesis. Present both sides of the issue, and, if elected, persuade the reader to adopt your chosen view.)

*compare and contrast (choose two topics and discuss them through what makes them similar and distinct. This may include comparing two different viewpoints and/or arguments.)

Papers must be typed, DOUBLE-SPACED ONLY with a 10-12 point font in Times New Roman or Arial and 1-inch margins. Do not put extra spacing between paragraphs or start the paper half-way down the first page. Ensure you write in third-person style (do not use ‘I’ or ‘you’ in the paper). A minimum of three sources must be used (do not use the textbook). You may use at most ONE online source if it is of academic origin (usually websites with ‘.edu’ address.) If you use eBooks, make sure they are ONLY through the SJR State library database and cite them as you would normal books (e.g. with page numbers).

Papers will be graded based upon general understanding of the topic, college-level analysis of the subject, proper sentence structure and organization, grammar, punctuation, tense, and flow. Papers must fulfill the required length (a letter grade will be deducted for each page shorter than required length). In addition, citations must be correct and appropriate: footnotes, with author, title, & page number. Ensure the final paper is below the similarity index of 20% when submitting to www.turnitin.com. Papers above this percentage will earn a failing grade.

  • A-level papers must be proficient in all areas (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure), have a strong thesis statement with support, include an introduction and conclusion, show college-level analysis, fulfill the required length, and have excellent citations.
  • B-level papers will have few or no errors in grammar, tense, and sentence structure, but may lack in strong analysis or have a weaker thesis, yet still have proper citations. Papers must have an introduction and conclusion, but they may not be strong.
  • C-level papers will show little college-level analysis or understanding of the subject, as well as elementary understanding of sentence structure and organization, grammar, or tense (e.g. using present tense for past tense subject). Papers may lack an intro. or conclusion. Citations must still be present and correct.
  • Failing papers show no understanding of the topic, no college-level analysis, is full of errors in sentence structure, grammar, and tense usage, as well as show little or no organization or flow to the paper. Citations are incorrect and/or wrong style. To avoid failing papers, utilize Smarthinking and/or the Academic Support Center on-campus.

No citations means a zero for the assignment.

The reference style in Humanities is CMS (Chicago Manual of Style); refer to the CMS Citation Guideline for further information.

Use the following questions as subheadings; use narrative writing, and follow APA writing guidelines, including acknowledgement of sources. For each question determine if this was a strength or weakness of the theory. You must have a title page and a reference page. The evaluation outline is adapted from the Synthesized Method for Theory Evaluation, McEwen & Wills (2014), p.108. Do not answer with “yes” or “no” responses.

Support your responses with a minimum of 3 (three) references. You may use the course textbook as one of your references, as applicable.

Part II: Theory Analysis

● Are concepts theoretically and operationally defined? Describe.

● Are statements theoretically and operationally defined? Describe.

● Is there a model/diagram? Does the model contribute to clarifying the theory? Explain.

● Are outcomes or consequences stated or predicted?

Do border children have rights? Should they? On what do you base your opinion? If you feel they have rights, what rights? Be as specific as possible. Justify your answer with relating current events to the treaties.

The news has been full of issues on the border children. Immigration is one issue that is complicated. We are not going to focus on politics or immigration in this assignment – we are going to have you focus just on the human rights issues of the children and youth. Focus on the children, not the adults, not the politicians. Look at what the treaties say children need. This includes physical health, mental healthy, decision making, staying with families, etc. (This is why you need to look at ALL the treaty articles in both the CRC and UDHR).

In this paper, you are to look at the following news articles on border children and then craft a 5 + page paper on whether you think their rights were violated. Make sure to reference the material you are using!!! Base your paper on the treaty articles and on what you learned in the textbook about the sociology of children and their development.

A sample of articles is below, and know that you are welcome to use others, as new ones come out daily and they are coming from different perspectives. Try to keep focused on child rights and wellbeing issues.

Please select an artwork (a photograph, a painting, a poem, a play, a piece of music, a film – _any_ form of art is allowed) that, in your view, speaks loudly and clearly about the way you imagine/understand wars and how you contemplate the link between art and war. Conduct research about the artist, situate the artwork in the overall opus/body of work of that artist, and explain the connection of the work to the class and the materials you have viewed/read in this course. You must use at least 3 readings from the course in your analysis, but there is no upper limit if you find the readings from the syllabus important and relevant for your essay.

The essays should be between 2000 and 2500 words (8-10 pages, double spaced).

Please cite all your sources very carefully and include a bibliography. The citation format is not important, as long as it is consistent throughout the text.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE PRODUCTION PAPER

http://www.beavertoncivictheatre.org/school-house-rock-live.html

http://www.beavertoncivictheatre.org/

– Link to the play and a recording of the play. Pick either one

(1200 words/4 typewritten pgs/double-spaced)

You must attend a live children’s performance between 8/20/18 and 10/21/18. The show must be geared for a children’s audience (infancy to 18 yrs. old). Children do not have to be in the cast, but children should be the target audience.

Write a title for your paper that reflects the overall point you make in the paper. Identify the title of the production and the name of the theatre or company presenting it in your first line or paragraph. For this course, write titles either with all caps or underlined. When referring to an actor, use that person’s name.

GENERAL
Use SPECIFIC examples from the performance. Refer to the events of the production to MAKE SPECIFIC POINTS.

DO NOT give LONG descriptions of visual elements in the performance. Use description ONLY BRIEFLY to help make your specific points.

Try to let your opinion show through in the points you choose to discuss. Do not state any appreciation or scorn (especially by saying you did or did not “like” something). Always say why you appreciated the use that was made of specific elements of production (e.g., sets, lights, costume, makeup, props, sound, movement, acting, direction). NO PLOT summaries, descriptions, play by plays, NO FILLER……

This paper is somewhat like a “book report.” You MUST CONVINCE the reader that you actually SAW the performance, so it is best to focus on one or two specific elements in each of the categories. In addition, balance your description of elements with evaluative comments on what each element meant for the overall production.

Write one paragraph or so about the elements of the production, using some of the following categories:

Overall evaluation and introduction to the paper.
Message & concept: What did the performance say to the audience?
How might this performance lead to social change? Does this production reflect issues in society today?
4. What production elements and values connected the acting, design and message?
5. Acting and Movement: projection, tone, dialect, pace, variety, posture, gesture, ensemble, believability, style, period and honesty.
6. Discuss two characters. Which of the actors or dancers did you most appreciate? Why? Base your analysis on an evaluation of how well the performers projected their characters, their vocal qualities, their physical dexterity, etc.
7. Directing: casting, blocking, composition, unity of elements, style and period, unity of purpose and message.
8. Set: environment. Did it serve the world of the play ? What particular design choices were made to create believability and suspension of disbelief ?
9. Costumes: appropriateness, believability & construction.
10. Lights: (similar to set)
11. Sound & Music: (similar to set)
12. Effects: (similar to set)
13. Theatre & stage: What type of stage architecture or arrangement was used? How well did the performers take advantage of it?
14. Audience & house: How did everyone else seem to respond, and how did it affect you? Distractions?

A review with too much description, appreciation, and/or plot narration will be GRADED LOWER. A review that expresses analysis or insight will be GRADED HIGHER.

The best review does more than simply report the facts of the performance. It explains what information or NEW understanding you gained from the production, and provides YOUR OWN PERSONAL ANALYSIS and RESPONSE to the overall performance. For example: What do you suppose the director and choreographers wanted to say with this production? Do you think the production did that purpose justice? Or did the production fail to make the purpose clear? What has led you to this conclusion?

Organize your review around a SPECIFIC, ORIGINAL THESIS. A meaning or message suggested by the performance usually works best. Be sure to explain your thesis carefully and DEFINE YOUR CONTENT EARLY in the review. Your introduction will usually take one paragraph, and it need not be long. Thesis statement

In your next three to five paragraphs, DEVELOP your argument and SUPPORT your thesis with EVIDENCE or EXAMPLES. Each paragraph should make its own point about the thesis, and should contain several examples of production elements. Each element should be a specific example from the production.

Explain your reasoning at each step. How do the elements help to make the point, and how do they relate to your overall argument or thesis? Make sure that your reader can understand HOW you reached your conclusions.

PROOFREAD your work. Grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure will affect the grade that your paper will earn as much as the content of the paper.
