Research Design and Methodology in Education

Recommended Reading: Creswell, John W. (2015, fifth edition), Educational Research: Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Quantitative and Qualitative Research; Pearson, Merrill, Prentice Hall. ISBN: 9780133831535

1. Quantitative, Qualitative and Critical Approaches to Research. Your postings in this folder should show your understanding of each genre, and assist us as instructors in providing information and guidance to improve your understanding of the genres of research. This forum has three topics. You should make at least two postings in each of these areas, one original and one in response to another persons posting. In your original post, you should post a response or reaction about the genre as you feel appropriate. Likewise, chose someone else’s post which might have tweaked your interest. There are no specific requirements regarding these responses, other than they should be relevant and thoughtful.
2. Planning Quantitative Research — Hypothetical Study. Understanding how to plan, conduct, design, and report research is an essential component of this course.Consult the appropriate sections in the text and your notes as you prepare to posts in this forum. Think of a research topic that you think is important for your classroom or work place, and choose one that you think can be effectively researched using quantitative methods. Related to your chosen topic, write the problem, purpose statement, research question, and hypothesis. Identify the independent and dependent variables of your hypothetical study. Identify your sample and population. Use references, where appropriate, to support the argument you are presenting, because essentially you are providing an argument or rationale for the importance of the research and how you can study the topic. This is not intended to be long, a sentence or two for each should suffice. You can even do this up in point form, if you wish.

3. Types of Quantitative Research: In the previous section on planning research, you dealt briefly with quantitative research designs. In this section, you are expected to study and comment in a more detailed way on the major types of quantitative designs: experimental, correlational, and survey. As well, as being able to identify studies in each major genre, you should be able to identify the type of studies within each genre. In the case of quantitative studies, this means being able to determine whether a study is experimental, correlational, or survey, and be able to critically analyze the extent to which a researcher has used the method chosen appropriately.

4. Your Research Topics Your postings in this folder should show your understanding of Qualitative Research. Submit your topic to Research Topic as a part of this discussion topic. What often works is to look around your place of work, or where you last worked, and name a piece of educational research that you would like to do to better understand the place and the people in it, or how to improve teaching and learning in that place of work [e.g. The effect of school-yard bullying on education in schools]. We ask you to keep that research topic in mind as we cover the various items related to Qualitative and Critical Research. It will help ground your readings and discussions in some reality for you.

5. For this week we will continue our discussions about Qualitative Research while introducing the distinction between methodology and method as it applies to our study of educational research. We will discuss the methodologies of ethnography, case study and grounded theory, and begin to explore the methods of interviews, focus groups, and observations as they might be used in qualitative research data collection and analysis.

6, Applying Qualitative Research: This week we will concentrate on the various methodologies and methods as they apply to your individual research topics. Please be reminded that this exercise is intended to help you make our readings and discussions on educational research a little more real.
Once again, check the readings found in Week Nine Schedule, as the Instructor Notes will be useful, as will the chapters from Creswell and Cohen. The Creswell Subject Index is always a helpful way to zero in on the subject or concept at hand. In terms of postings, I will be encouraging you to share how you would choose a methodology and various methods [using triangulation] for you research topic.

7. Critical Research: this forum provides an opportunity for you to enhance and share your general understanding of Critical Research. Your postings in this folder should show your understanding of Critical Research.

8.Doing critical research: Continue our discussions about Critical Research and we will remind you of the distinction made between methodology and method as it applies to our study of educational research and your research topic. In terms of Critical Research we will focus on the methodologies of critical ethnography, action research, narrative research, and an elaborated discussion on feminist research. We will explore the methods of journal writing, document analysis, as well as interviews, focus groups, observations as they might be used in critical research data collection and analysis.
9. Applying critical Research: concentrate on the various methodologies and methods from a Critical Research approach as they might apply to your individual research topic. The notes, readings, and discussions we have shared during the past two weeks come into play here as you apply them to your chosen topic. By now you have become familiar with the bank of readings in Course Content, as well you are now able to work your way around Creswell in a fashion that allows you to find and focus on specific subjects. We will work along with you, to the best of our distance ability, to help you apply what you know about Critical Research to your topic. your colleagues will do the same. As usual in terms of postings, we will be encouraging you to share how you would choose a methodology and various methods [using triangulation] for your research topic.

How art was understood, appreciated and shared historically, both by artists and the general public How the discovery and appreciation of art has changed due to advances in technology How social and political happenings have influenced artists

Read Which Is the Most Influential Work of Art Of the Last 100 Years (Plagens, Peter, Newsweek, 7/2/2007, Vol. 150, Issue 2) and review ‘Picasso and American Art’ (Associated Press, 2006). These resources better explain how artists were influenced and inspired by other artists, social influences and cultures, including Picasso himself while painting “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”. Write a 1-2 page paper discussing the following topics:

  • How art was understood, appreciated and shared historically, both by artists and the general public
  • How the discovery and appreciation of art has changed due to advances in technology
  • How social and political happenings have influenced artists

You may use resources from the Rasmussen library. Use APA format for proper citation.

Do you think porn is affecting adolescent development? Do you think it is impacting how boys perceive what is “normal”? Do you think it is impacting how girls view their own sexuality? What do you think the potential long-term implications could be? Does it affect things like “rape culture” and “victim blaming”?

Attached is a link to a very interesting article. This week you are learning about adolescence and all of the changes of the brain and body. Read this article and write your forum post in response to the information. The requirements for the forum post are the same as all of your previous forum posts: 400-word minimum initial post with one reference (not your textbook) and two 100 word response posts to classmates. While reading this article I want you to think about the things you learned from a developmental perspective. Do you think porn is affecting adolescent development? Do you think it is impacting how boys perceive what is “normal”? Do you think it is impacting how girls view their own sexuality? What do you think the potential long-term implications could be? Does it affect things like “rape culture” and “victim blaming”?

The initial forum post should be at least 400 words and should include a reference that is not your textbook. I do not have a preference of where you get your reference (website, book, journal, newspaper, magazine etc.) as long as it is valid and in APA format. You also need to respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts with a minimum of 100 words each.

This research paper is on two books: “End of the Game” by Julio Cortazar and “War Of The End Of The World” by Mario Vargas Llosa.

This research paper is on two books: “End of the Game” by Julio Cortazar and “War Of The End Of The World” by Mario Vargas Llosa.

You will be writing summaries on these two books. Write 6 pages on each book (total 12 pages content, excluding title page and bibliography, those should be there too but not part of the 12 page count).

The first book: “End of the Game” by Julio Cortazar. This book has multiple short stories, only write about these 3 stories: 1) Axolotl 2) Letter to a Young Lady in Paris 3) Blow Up

I have provided the actual source called “links to some sources” & a pdf “Axolotl”. Also, I found some summaries and analysis that might help which are in the same doc I gave you. Do not copy these ideas, I just put to help you write the paper. You should really just use the books for information, but these links/summary analyses can help enrich the information. Indicate which you have used.
Please read the each short story and answer the questions for each short story:
1. What is the book about (write a summary)
2. What you think of the short story (things you liked about it, etc write in detail)
3. why you think it’s a good short story

Outline for Cortazar’s book essay:
Introduction to the book, with thesis, and state which short stories will be discussed. then answer the 3 top questions for Axolotl, then answer 3 q’s about Letter to young lady in paris, then answer 3 questions about the short story Blow Up, then have a conclusion paragraph recapping the book & the 3 short stories ending the essay.

SECOND Book: “War Of The End Of The World” by Mario Vargas Llosa.
You must use this book to get the information to answer the prompt: READ the book ENTIRELY then write the paper. You can find the book at your nearest library. Also, I found some websites with information that may help you write the paper found in the document titled “linked to some sources”. You should really just use the books for information, but these websites can help enrich the information. Indicate which you have used.
Outline:
-Introduction paragraph with strong clear thesis
1. What is the book about (like the summary)
2. What you think of the short story
3. why you think it’s a good short story
-Conclusion paragraph recapping the main points

-have a bibliography and title page for each book
-do not use wikipedia. only use the book as source, but if you see you cannot answer the questions from above, let me know and tell me which articles/sources you want to use. But do not use it until I confirm it is ok to use the other sources.
-double space
-12 font.
-Times new roman font.
-PLEASE DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!! write a UNIVERSITY-LEVEL essay with correct grammar and university-level vocabulary. Paper MUST be well structured!!

The Task:
Should dark pools be prohibited? Discuss this statement by exclusively presenting arguments for AND against. To make your arguments you must anchor your writing in the academic literature on your topic. For the purposes of this assignment, you should argue for AND against, and provide a convincing conclusion!

Your writing must be anchored in the academic literature. It is imperative that you provide full and correct references in your essay.
Format Your essay should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words long, excluding references.
Please sate your word limit at the end of the essay.
It must be typed, using an 11 point font and 1.5 line spacing. Please be aware that you must adhere to the word limit, writing fewer than 1,500 words or more than 2,000 will be penalised.

When I met the professor she mention that,
– I have to definite (definition )dark polls from many different writers and resource , compering between them and give my opinion clearly about the best one and why .
– Focus on the main ideas of the task the positives and negative points of dark polls ( don’t use more than 2 points each ) which make the dark pools be prohibited or allowed and why ? , give my opinion clearly by use ( I , my opinion , my point of view , I agree … , I disagree ) in every one . and try to focus on the positive if you think should dark pool allowed or focus more on the negatives point if you think should dark pool be prohibited.
– She does not need a lot of points, but she need more depth analysis for each one
– I have to explain why I agree this writer and why I don’t agree
– Use professor’ reading list above as resources (compulsory)
– I need 14 reference included the professor reading list.
– Use short conclusion (because we already gave my opinion on the analysis therefore not more than 3 or 4 sentences .
– Use British English.
– For references list should use Harvard style .
– Use new references .

In this task you should discuss reasons in depth and support them with evidence from the academic literature. You should focus on what you feel are the most compelling reasons and explain your choice of reasons. Listing many reasons and only writing a few sentences on each will not be appropriate, so be selective and prioritise. You may use examples from anywhere in the world to illustrate a reason but again you should explain why you chose this example.
Ensure that any statement that is not your personal view or your personal invention is clearly attributed to a source in your text. You are permitted to write “I think…”, “I believe….”, provided you can also give reasons for your view point. You are also permitted to write in the third person, e.g. “One could argue….”, “The literature suggests… “ etc., however, you should not use “we” as this is an individual assignment!

11. William Faulkner: “A Rose for Emily” and “Barn Burning”

Your first research paper-related assignment will be to select a topic with the following requirements in mind:

Focus your criticism on the following:

You will provide a close reading of a text analyzing the presentation of one cultural role (i.e. mother, father, wife, husband, poet, artist, sister, brother, soldier, leader, American, etc.). Your writing will pick apart the text considering all points where this specific role is presented, referenced or commented on. Your thesis will argue specifically how this role is portrayed in the work and how this informs the reader of the author’s intentions or background. Elements of formalist and biographical critique are expected. Further explorations of themes such as feminism, postmodernism or race theory are optional, but can be very helpful.

When you propose a paper in an upcoming assignment, you’ll need to have chosen your research paper topic for our final. This is a long-term project, so it’s important we start thinking about this now.

There’s a list of all the writers and their works elsewhere in this folder.

Once you’ve selected the author, you’ll be doing a close reading of a work by that writer – a work that we didn’t cover in class.  Make sure that you are covering a short work (a poem or short story). Please do not try to cover a novel.

You will pursue this work on your own using online resources and your library.

are we too dependent on computers ?

Search for articles that will help you formulate and support your thesis for your Toulmin argument (essay #2). You will also need to find at least one source that represents an alternative or opposing argument. Compile a list of the five sources most relevant to your essay and describe them in your annotated bibliography. These can include sources that you have already discussed in your first essay.

Your sources must include:

at least one peer-reviewed academic article that you will use to support your claim or one of your premises.
at least one article that presents a different characterization of the issue or an opposing argument. This article does not have to directly oppose yours at the same level of stasis. For example, if you are making a claim about policy that is supported by a claim about causation, you may have to dispute another article that makes a different causal claim, even if it makes no claim about policy.
5 or more sources total.

Create a reference entry (author, date, title, etc.) for each source in APA format and, below each one, create an annotation (descriptive paragraph) for each source that does the following in approximately 5-7 sentences:

It must summarize the main argument (conclusion and at least one premise) of the source.
It must assess the article’s source and purpose. What is the author’s or publisher’s goal (besides informing people)? Who is the target audience? Does that affect how the article is written? How credible is this source? Is it peer-reviewed?
It must explain how you intend to use the article in your essay. Does it support your claim or one of your premises? Be specific. Is it an opposing argument that you will need to contradict? Is it a mischaracterization of the issue that you will need to correct? Does it help to demonstrate the exigence or constraints of the rhetorical situation?

Each annotation should answer these three questions in a total of approximately 5-7 sentences. Do not simply repeat information in the published abstract. Plagiarism in the annotations is still plagiarism, and it will result in a failing grade for the assignment.

Format requirements

-Double-spaced, size 11 or 12 standard font

For the following clips, you will write a description that contains TWO sentences that are general statements that describe your overall impression of the dance, and TWO sentences that describe a few seconds from the dance that support the general statements you made including 3 component descriptions.

PART ONE
Practice:
When describing a dance, it works well to:
first saying something you noticed about the choreography in general terms
followed by specific descriptions of a few seconds of the movement that support those claims that include the 3 component descriptions from Lesson 1.
replace the word movement/motion/move with specific descriptive or active words.
Here are some examples of this kind of writing, please watch the clips and then read the sample writing. Notice the paragraphs start with TWO general sentences followed by TWO sentences with specific descriptions of the choreography including 3 component descriptions to support the claims.

Swan Lake Pas de Quatre (small swans)

Bolshoi Swan Lake – Pas de Quatre Small Swans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY4Y1gTO9HE)

In Swan Lake, the dancers prance swiftly from one side of the stage to the other with incredible precision. They almost seem to be one person in the way their bodies are so in sync. For example, at one point in the piece, the dancers briskly flick their feet to their ankles while almost gliding from right to left. Because their hands are firmly grasped and their heads bob crisply in perfect unison, their bodies seem to blend into one lovely creature.

Amelia performed by La la la Human steps, choreographed by Édouard Lock:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCHrzakA5X4 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Amelia is particularly compelling in its combination of quickness and stillness. The dance seems to alternate between the two, and the speed with which the female dancer is able to perform the intricate choreography makes the sudden stillness-es that much more startling. The woman’s hand flicks and dabs abruptly against the mans chest while her directions change quickly as he turns her torso. This is contrasted by the abrupt stop she makes in a broad low lunge by bending crisply at the knee with her arms raised to the position of an L.

PART TWO
We have practiced supporting general claims with movement description. Now we are going to practice creating a specific perspective in the form of a thesis statement by comparing two of the clips to each other.

Below are 3 sample thesis statements that compare two of the video clips to each other. Notice that the statements are saying something really specific about the two pieces.

1. The choreographers for D-Man in the Waters and Water, part 1 both use clear dynamic choices in the movement to reflect the dynamic changes in the music for each piece so that the viewer “sees” the music in the dancers’ bodies.

2. Although both Rich Man’s Frug and Meyer contained many moments when the dancers’ arms unfurled successionally, the gestures in Rich Man’s Frug stayed close to the dancers’ kinespheres, while in Meyer, the movement reached far into the space.

3. I noticed that the choreographers for Walklyndon and Movin’ Out created choreography that seamlessly combined athletic solos with equally strong partnering sequences.

Create 3 specific thesis statements that compare two of the video clips to each other.

Discussion Forum Rubric
+1 point for accurately following the 2 general sentence 2 specific sentence format (if the entries go past 4 sentences, you will not receive this point)

+1 point for thoughtfully constructing 2 sentences that clearly describe a moment or two from the dances that includes 3 component descriptions (body part, verb, adverb)

+1 point for how well the movement descriptions support the general claims. Make sure that if you talk about how the choreography utilizes the concept of level that the descriptions of the movement support the idea (the dancer rolled to the floor then jumped high into the air extending fully through her arms) rather than using a description that is unrelated (the dancer ran quickly across the stage while shaking her head violently)

+ 1 point for creating three specific thesis statements about how two of the pieces compare to each other.

+1 point for thoughtfully responding to another student’s post
