CLC – Leading Teams at West Coast Transit
This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

It is not unusual for organizations to have several people in leadership roles who participate in collaborative decision making for the benefit of the entire organization. Leading teams of diverse individuals is a significant challenge and negotiating individual strengths, weaknesses, and personalities can be difficult. Nonetheless, as managers it is your responsibility to effectively lead teams through establishing expectations designed to motivate individuals, fostering critical decision-making skills, and improving communication and collaboration among teammates. For the assignments in Topics 3 and 5, as part of the management team at a successful, regional airline, West Coast Transit, you have been directed to form a team for a high-stakes, high-pressure project. Together, the management team will come to a consensus and a recommendation will be delivered to the director.

In assigned teams, individuals should share their recommendations for a team of six people from the given teammate profiles. Once each individual has made a case, together, the CLC must negotiate and select a team that will eventually be presented to the director. Begin by reading “West Coast Transit Company Profile” and “West Coast Transit Team Member Profiles.” Based on your understanding of the company, the project, and the people involved propose your team selection. Your proposal should be accompanied by a explanation that addresses the following:

Why did you team select the six team members? Why did you decide against the others?

1. Research ethical principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice as they relate to the Tuskegee syphilis study.
2. Elements of the Nuremberg Code of 1947 and the Belmont Report. Why were each written and how do they relate these to the Tuskegee syphilis study.
3. Universal Declaration of Human Rights and what, if any, violations of these rights occurred in the Tuskegee syphilis study.
4. Offer your comments about the nurse in the Tuskegee syphilis study and her role in the study. Who is this nurse? What was her role in the study? Discuss how she dealt with the potential or actual ethical conflicts. Were her actions justified, ethical or not?
5. Discuss the differences in the researchers’ behavior from the Tuskegee study era (early 1930s until early 1970s) compared to the expectations for researchers’ ethical behavior in the present time.

Essay Questions: Answer ONLY ONE question to the best of your abilities. Your essay should be concise and coherent. It should demonstrate a familiarity with the readings, films, and lectures, and an ability to analyze and synthesize them in the course of articulating a cogent answer. Your essay should be typed, properly cited, double-spaced, and 5-pages long. (Use MLA or Chicago Manual for citations.) Late examinations may be accepted but will be penalized a full grade point per day. 1. “While the blatantly racist orientalism of the high colonial period has softened, more subtle orientalist ideologies endure in contemporary politics.” What does this statement mean? Write a well-organized essay using concrete examples from the readings (both primary and secondary sources), films, and documentary.

2. Congratulations! You have been selected to give a public lecture on North Korea. The audience will tend to subscribe to the US media’s portrayal of North Korea and its leaders as lacking rationality. Write a well-organized lecture outlining the evolution of North Korean diplomacy since the 1950s that gives a historically informed interpretation of the country and its foreign relations. Make sure to use concrete examples from the readings.

These papers are a great way for you to “talk back” to the readings and class discussions, to analyze
the particular topic from your own perspective. This is a time for you to participate in producing your
own knowledge around race and racism in the 21st century. Critiquing an author, text, or idea is also a
great way to engage with the course’s major themes. You may also reflect on the theme and ask how
it affects, or if it affects your daily lives. Bringing in current events, and using class text to process
these events, is another option. The choice is yours.

The paper should have three major parts:
1) A major thesis statement or question that is to be presented in the paper
2) A set of themes or questions that will help you address your thesis statement
3) Your own original perspective and/or take on the major themes discussed in the paper.

Please note: these 15 questions are to guide the development of your critique, and may inform the structure of your assignment. Depending on the methodology used in your chosen seminars, some of these 15 questions may not be appropriate for your critique.
