Even after becoming an independent country, the development of the United States was  heavily influenced by external powers including England, France, Mexico, and, of course, Native  Americans. What were the ways those groups influenced US activities, and how did the  Americans respond?

You will write an essay that explores the given topic, one of the two
listed below. It should be a complete essay, including an introduction, a conclusion, and
evidence paragraphs, in the traditional 5 or 6 paragraph format. Because you will have access
to your notes, I will be expecting clear and specific examples from class to support your ideas. It MUST use the book attached to write and intext citation.
A) Even after becoming an independent country, the development of the United States was
heavily influenced by external powers including England, France, Mexico, and, of course, Native
Americans. What were the ways those groups influenced US activities, and how did the
Americans respond?
B) What do you believe was the United States major Foreign Policy goal during the period from
its independence to the Civil War? What did Americans prioritize? What did they hope to
achieve? How did they go about achieving it? What other goals do you think they also had? In
your opinion, why was the goal you chose the most important to Americans?

As the title of the book suggests, Annette Lareau in Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life (2011) argues that the influences of social class and race result in “unequal childhoods.” Why are they unequal? How is this inequality produced? In her study, which status (race or class) does she argue is more influential? Discuss why she comes to this conclusion.

This assignment is worth 50 points. The basic goals of this assignment are threefold: to challenge you (1) to explore the course material in various ways (outside of lecture/commentary); (2) to explore the ways in which social class and race shape family life; and (3) to work on communicating your ideas and your understanding of the lesson material in ways beyond simple memorization.

Beyond this, the assignment is meant to encourage you to recognize how race and social class shape family life, and in turn, how family life results in and reproduces class and race inequalities. Lareau provides specific examples demonstrating how social class influences everyday realities such as language, confidence, interacting with adults, and so on. You should be able to draw effectively on these examples in making your argument.

As with all papers for this course, your assignment should adhere to the following guidelines:

approximately 2 pages in length (can be about 15 lines less than or 5 lines more than 2 pages), with as much as 10 lines allowed for header and title lines before the body of your main text begins
single-spaced, without formatting that adds extra space after each line, and with a single blank space before each additional paragraph and at least one single blank space before and after any title to your paper
1″ margins
12-point font
single spacing for references at the end of the paper, with a single space before each additional reference
Your writing will be evaluated for the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your response, and you should proofread your assignment for grammatical accuracy.

Articles to read: “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr and “Smarter Than You Think: How technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” by Clive Thompson

Argumentative Essay

Articles to read: “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr and “Smarter Than You Think: How technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” by Clive Thompson

Purpose: to persuade your audience to reasonably consider your position. (An argument—your opinion)

Opinion: Technology is changing the way we think — in a positive way.

Potential thesis: In our modern times, computers are what runs the world. While some people believe computers are harming us, they are unable to see that without the technological advancements computers have made, society wouldn’t be prospering the way it is.

Paper Requirements: (**All drafts must include information from the article, using correct MLA documentation.**)
1. Thesis statement must be in the “topic + opinion + reason format” OR “topic + opinion format.” ***To help with organization, try putting your thesis statement as the last sentence in your introduction***
Hint: use similar words in the topic sentences of your body paragraphs as are in your thesis statement. It’ll help you focus and stay organized.
2. Length: 6 paragraphs (introduction, four+ body paragraphs, and the conclusion); each paragraph should have seven to ten sentences each. Your paper will be anywhere from 3-6 pages long.
3. Use transitions to glue your ideas together
4. *MLA documentation & formatting. (***This applies to THREE areas: your paper’s format, in-text citations, and the works cited page. See the MLA packet for help and any associated MLA handouts or PowerPoints.)
*–Quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing: use information from the article and to prove your thesis statement. Each time you mention an idea from the articles, you must put the author’s name and page in parenthesis at the end of the information like this: (Barry 542). If you fail to do this, you’ve committed unintentional plagiarism. IMPORTANT: right after you use information from the article, explain how that information relates to and proves your thesis. This is called analyzing. It’s very important as you’re learning to assert your academic voice, tone, and stance. You need to deeply explore what you quote, paraphrase, or summarize.
5. Classical or Rogerian Arrangement.
6. Use both articles to prove your argument.

comparison OR contrast paper.

the first article is https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/broken-english-4/#content and the second comparison paper is https://www.huffingtonpost.com/priscilla-takondwa-semphere/broken-english-mother-tongues_b_7698634.html
Questions to keep in mind when you are writing the Comparison paper:
• What are they (the 2 texts) about?
• Did they originate at some particular time?
• Who created them? Who uses or defends them? Or, more broadly, who does it appeal to?
• What is the central focus, claim, or goal of each? What conclusions do they offer? What are the points of comparisons you can draw from them?
• How are they applied to situations/people/things/etc.?
• Which seems more plausible to you, and why? How broad is their scope?
• What kind of evidence is offered from each of them?
Objective:
The learning objective in this paper is to understand the ways in which texts on a wider topic are interconnected (when you compare them) OR
The ways in which texts share and explore different perspectives on broadly similar topics (you may notice this difference in perspective when you contrast texts)
Why?
Comparing or Contrasting texts show students the ways in which reasoned arguments can take place by assimilating knowledge along multiple perspectives and axes on a broader topic.
Tools Required (for Students):
• For either comparing OR contrasting, students need to show their audience (peers and the instructor) their skills in using summaries (that inform the audience broadly on the focus of the 2 texts they compare OR contrast)
• Students are required to elaborate their knowledge of paraphrasing and quoting as they familiarize their readers in the ways in which the 2 texts can be either compared OR contrasted with each other.
• Students need not present independent thoughts about the two texts, but are required to only indicate the ways in which the texts are connected and interact with the broader topic (that is, how do the texts contrast OR compare)
• Students need to realize that the texts they find online cannot be blog posts, editorials, or personal digital entries or twitter handles!
• Students must refrain from using online sources that use profanity or hurtful/hateful expressions of any kind.
• Students need to assess sources they select online to be at least credible and use-worthy.
• Students are NOT REQUIRED to use “I” voice
• All summaries, paraphrases, quotations within the paper must use MLA 7th ed. format
• this Paper should has a Works Cited page at the end.

Opportunity identification

1. Opportunity identification (chapter 3)
a) Choose an industry/product or service category and identify an Australian firm doing business in Australia.
b) To commence the opportunity identification process, you need to understand the market environment the firm is playing in. This requires you to first conduct a situational analysis (an overview of the market situation, firm/ brand performance and customer challenges) to assist in identifying areas of opportunity.
c) You should then conduct a competitor analysis.
d) Next develop a SWOT looking at internal (firm/ brand) and external (category) factors to distils and prioritise the opportunities gathered from the situational ad competitor analysis
e) At this point, you should specifically identify the market size and company share within the category. Be sure to include market size (number of Australians in the market, # of units/dollars sold in Australia each year). You will need these numbers later to calculate projected sales i.e. % of people who would buy (the ‘top 2 box’ score) the product times (x) the size of the Australian market (reported in your swot) times (x) the price stated in your concept test. Note: If for some reason you are unable to find specific market size data, then you will need to use your best judgement and provide an explicit rationale as to how you arrived at your market estimate.
f) Finally, you should develop the firm’s product innovation charter, showing how it fits with the overall business strategy and supports the product/ service portfolio already being offered and resourced
