Argumentative Essay (Rough Draft)
Working thesis statement.
Women are the sole victims of social patriarchy and they are regarded as weak, problematics and inferior to man because of societal expectations which demand that women follow their assigned roles and are shunned if they cannot.
Main point 1.
This paragraph will explore the reasons why women are weak and inferior and their attitude and mentality of becoming subordinate and inferior to man; a situation that would make patriarchal authority and social injustice.
Male power in a patriarchy can be found in our society today. This patriarchy can be found in family, community and work force. Men are presented to be rulers while women are being perceived to be less intelligent, less capable and less worthy. By 21st Century, Patriarchy has shaped our cultural practices and affects how we think and behave.
What’s happening in the text
Patriarchal authority imposed on the people in the community is one of the social injustices. Given the predetermined course of the life of women, the code of conduct forces them to take control of their own life and live on terms that master their fates. As a result, women readily deny even the death of their fathers as seen by Emily and Mallard. As long as the women are capable of surviving financially and psychologically, their future seems imminent. Women are forced to become romantically adaptive to any man even the one from a lower social class. The financial necessity influences the manner and standards of how a woman behaves. Although a genuine woman needs companionship, the people think they are weak and needy.

Mrs. Mallard in the Story of an hour, depicts the woman’s character of being afflicted with a heart trouble. She could not bear the sad message of her husband’s death. Women, therefore, are seen with a paralyzed inability to accept the truth. Women in the community are seen to have certain strength as seen by Emily and Mallard in the death of their fathers (Chopin).

Gail Godwin Short story talks about a woman who goes through life feeling unhappy and, in this context, it is a strongly polemical feminist story on patriarchy. This woman is portrayed as a kind of “cloistered queen.”
Quote from the text
“She began yelping without tears, retching in between. The man woke in alarm and carried her in his arms to bed. The boy followed them up the stairs, saying,”
“It’s all right, Mommy,” but this made her scream (Godwin, 1).
Analysis of the quote and relevance to the thesis
From this quote, the woman has an attitude of being weak, inferior, unproductive and irresponsible despite having a caring and responsible husband. So, this kind of attitude in women can make patriarchal authority to prevail.
Main point 2.
This paragraph will argue about societal expectations which demand that women follow their assigned roles which cause social injustices.

Marriage
Role of wives
Women are relegated to hearth and home. They are expected to clean, mothering and serving husband. These work are considered less important.
Stereotypes Failure of not having children
What’s happening in the text

However, marriage is portrayed as a resolution for women. As seen in A Secret Sorrow, a woman will be happily fulfilled in marriage. Since marriage solves problems and is a source of unending happiness, once a woman is married, there is no more anxiety. A Rose for Emily is narrated by a plural we voice, it stands for the collective town. Women are therefore seen to represent the aristocratic heritage of the town. From Emily’s eccentricity and being pitiable, the people in town were able to watch and judge her behind closed doors. Indeed, the darker motive of Miss Emily makes the people scrutinize her life hence taking pleasure in women’s fall to poverty and a social feeling of superiority.
Kate Chopin talked about how Louse Mallard became heart-broken with physical exhaustion reaping down her soul due to the death of his husband that never was. The woman lost the courage and worth of living without her husband until she died of heart disease.
The role of women as wives and mothers always diminish at the death of their husbands. From the stories, the women competently fulfill all the role of a mother in a durable, healthy and gentle manner. As a result of a discernible cause, the women no longer need to carry up that responsibility. They become sick and their feelings and comfort cannot be overturned. The women’s increasing retreat makes her need to be urgently busy so as to It is a consequence of a woman leaving her family and retiring from the role of a woman. Women feel beautiful, complete and whole in their role as wives and mothers as is for Faye in A Secret Sorrow.

In both stories of A Secret Sorrow and A Sorrowful woman, women portray the idea of marriage and family. Marriage with children is presented as a perfect and completely fulfilling family. Therefore, marriage and family in these stories is the antithesis of happiness. Although from A Secret of Sorrow, marriage is directly encouraged, the other stories, A Sorrowful Woman, A Rose for Emily and Story of an Hour, marriage is indirectly questioned and discouraged. The women in these stories experience conflict which comes before marriage. Misery and torment struck women because of not having children. In A Secret Sorrow, Van Der Zee suggests that marriage with children will make Faye and her loved one be truly happy. As a result, Faye feels that being unable to have children cuts her off from Kai’s love.

Quote from the text
“She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms (Chopin, 6),” … “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease (Chopin, 8).”
Analysis of the quote and relevance to the thesis
From this quote, a woman is seen to lack courage to live on her own. Women fully depend on their husbands and treat them as superiors whose absence make life worthless.

Main point 3
This paragraph will talk about HOW WOMEN ARE SHUNNED IF THEY DON’T FULLFILL THEIR ROLES.
The main point will be supported by “A Secrete Sorrow” by Karen van der Zee and “A Rose for Emily” by Faulkner et al.

Write a minimum four page essay supporting your position on the proper distribution of power between the national government and the states. Are you a centalist (national gov’t.) or decentralist (states). Support your posion with specific data, details and examples. Include a minimum of two SCOTUS decisions that support your position. Please use the supports/examples: OBERGEFELL v. HODGES which legalized gay marriage and said that states couldn’t bar it. Essentially it removed the notion that marriage was a “state” issue under the 10th Amendment and that because marriage is a fundamental right, the states cannot block gay marriage. Power shifted to the federal government Contrast that with U.S. v. Lopez wherein the SCOTUS ruled that COngress overreached with the commerce clause in passing the Gun Free Schools Zone Act. SCOTUS said, essentially, that gun regulation was a state matter – power to the states and less for the federal government

Casablanca Film Response

Classical Hollywood Cinema (CHC) is also known as “invisible” film style. Roughly speaking, the invisibility of the film style here indicates a spatiotemporal and dramatic continuity generated by a particular utilization of mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing. The aim of this film style is to draw attention to the story rather than the way in which the story gets told. By the same token, the spectators are prevented from realizing the presence of camera, the use of editing, the fabricated quality of film, and they view the film as if the reality itself is uninterruptedly unfolding before their eyes. Casablanca is one of the outstanding examples of CHC. Please discuss how the film produces an invisible film style through editing, cinematography and mise-en-scene. Please do not analyze the acting style and the use of music.

In order to write a coherent film response, you should construct at least two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, you are expected to explain your claims about the film. In the second paragraph, you should show that the film evidences your claims. In other words, you should not simply write that this or that film utilizes the understanding of this or that cinematographic/dramatic approach without providing the analysis of the stylistic/dramatic qualities of at least one scene from the film. Needless to say, the scene(s) that you analyze should, in turn, support your overall suggestions about the film. You are expected to write at least 500 words.

A Daoist crcritique of Confucian morali

make sure you can acsess Confucian Classics (the Book of Documents, the Analects, the Mencius, and the Xunzi) and the classics of Daoism (the Laozi and Zhuangzi) they are needed for the competion of this assignment

Read the attachment. The primary purpose of the first assignment is to have you read the basic texts of early Confucianism and Daoism. For this reason, you should read these texts as closely as you can before beginning to compose your essays! In order for you to compare and contrast their views of the good life and good government, I think I can give you some more specific guidelines:

Both Confucian and Daoist thinkers were primarily concerned with how to lead a good life in times of chaos (moral and existential questions), and how to achieve good government (political philosophical questions). Each of these thinkers (Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, Laozi, and Zhuangzi) had different ideas and offered different solutions as to these problems. Figure out how each thinker understood human nature (re: good life), and what each offered as solutions (re: good government) to rampant evils in human society at the time! Of course, you can choose to focus on either “the good life” or “good government,” but you can also address the other by spelling out the far-reaching implications of their views.

Once you have gained a confident understanding of these texts through close reading, you can find a more specific topic for further inquiry into the implications of these texts. For example, you might want to begin with the question of why and how Laozi and Zhuangzi were so critical of Confucian philosophy (what were their differences were as to human nature and good government); or you might want to defend Confucianism by constructing a Confucian apology against Daoist critiques.

You can, of course, address these issues by focusing on a more specific question: for example, you can focus on the difference between Laozi and Confucius. Even if your focus is on Laozi and Confucius, you should also cite later texts (Mencius, Xunzi, and Zhuangzi) because by reading the later texts, you can form a clearer understanding of their predecessors (Laozi and Confucius). Vice versa, you can choose to compare Zhuangzi and Xunzi, but you should also cite the other three texts.

Here is a list of possible topics for your essays:

1. A Daoist (Laozi or Zhuangzi or both) critique of Confucian (Confucius or Mencius or Xunzi) morality (remember “morality” is not only for individuals but also for government

The First Essay Assignment
1. Topic: Based on your reading of the Confucian Classics (the Book of Documents, the Analects, the Mencius, and the Xunzi) and the classics of Daoism (the Laozi and Zhuangzi), compare and contrast the ways of the good life and good government, as articulated by these two rivaling schools of thought in ancient China.
2. Tips: In order to write a successful essay, you should first establish your views of what Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, despite their differences, commonly offered as solutions to political chaos and social disorder. Once you have gained a fair understanding of Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, reconstruct a Daoist critique of the Confucian Way based on a close reading of the Laozi and the Zhuangzi.
3. 3. Textual Evidence: In your essay you should provide textual evidence for your arguments. For historical contextualization you can use the Cambridge Illustrated History of China with proper citation; however, NEVER use on-line sources as they tend to be misleading. Footnotes are expected. Internal parenthetical citations are NOT acceptable.
4. Title: The title of your essays should contain be composed of two parts, a running head and a sub-title, respectively. An essay without a proper title will NOT be accepted. These are a few possible examples:
a. “Ritual as Self-fulfillment”: The Significance of Ritual in the early evolution of Confucian Thought b. “The Ministers Should Reprove a Ruler”: Ministerial Check on Kingship in early Confucian Texts c. “Order, Wealth, and Legitimacy”: The Work of Government defined in Early Confucian Classics
5. Length: 5 pages (Times New Roman 12 points, double-spaced)

Which author this week seems most representative of the Modern viewpoint as you understand it? Explain. Some research on Modernism might be required here! Be sure to identify at least 3 reasons or points to explore in the body of your paper. You might examine 3 qualities of Modernism and discuss how those qualities appear in the poetry of ee cummings, for example.
Your essay should be formatted in MLA style, including double spacing throughout. All sources should be properly cited both in the text and on a works cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).

In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don’t forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.
Should you choose to use outside references, these must be scholarly, peer-reviewed sources obtained via the APUS library (select Advanced Search and check the Peer Reviewed box). Be careful that you don’t create a “cut and paste” paper of information from your various sources. Your ideas are to be new and freshly constructed. Also, take great care not to plagiarize.

Whatever topic you choose you will need a debatable thesis. A thesis is not a fact, a quote, or a question. It is your position on the topic. The reader already knows the story; you are to offer him a new perspective based on your observations.

Since the reader is familiar with the story, summary is unnecessary. Rather than tell him what happened, tell him what specific portions of the story support your thesis.
