What are the three most interesting, surprising, or thought-provoking insights about college that I gained from reading Delbanco’s book? Explain why each insight was meaningful to you.

Delbanco’s book: College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be.

You should focus on answering the following question:

What are the three most interesting, surprising, or thought-provoking insights
about college that I gained from reading Delbanco’s book? Explain why each
insight was meaningful to you.

 You should aim to write approximately 1 to 1 ½ pages on each insight.

 Each of your insights should be accompanied by one or two quotes from

Delbanco’s book. It is preferable to use short quotes that provide a starting point
for sparking your own ideas and insights.
Since this is a response paper, it is important to focus on your response to Delbanco’s book.

You should not simply summarize what Delbanco says in his chapters

Capstone Essay

Content
Begin your paper with a brief introductory paragraph that clearly states what positions you are going to argue for. State what metaethic you will defend, the issue in applied ethics to which you will be applying it, and the conclusion(s) on that issue that you want to defend.
Next provide a lengthy and detailed explanation of your metaethic. This will likely reflect the metaethic that you argued for in your Discussion Board Three thread and the feedback that you received from the classmate or classmates who responded to your thread. Here you can go into much more detail than you could in the Discussion Board, which was limited to 600 words. If you use half of your paper to develop your metaethic, then it will contain approximately 1100 words, which means that it will be roughly twice as long as your Discussion Board thread was.
Once you have fully explicated and argued for your metaethic, proceed to an application of that metaethic to the applied ethics issue that you discussed in your Discussion Board Four thread. This discussion may end up being twice as long as your discussion board thread was. Add detail, nuance, and argumentation, providing a fairly complete and comprehensive argument for approaching the issue the way that you do. You may illustrate the issue with real-life examples, but please do not fill your paper with anecdotes. You should anticipate possible objections to your approach to the issue and respond to them in an objective and informed manner. (For ideas on how others might object to your approach, a good place to begin would be your classmate’s reply to your DB4 thread, but you needn’t stop there. Your own imagination and the many books and articles that have been published on issues in applied ethics can provide a wealth of possible arguments relevant to every issue.)
Your final paragraph(s) should reflect that you have accomplished your thesis. It should recap what you have accomplished and how you have accomplished it.

Research
This paper is not required to utilize any sources outside of those that were used in the class (the two textbooks, the videos, and the PointCast presentations), but use of additional resources is permitted and encouraged. At the minimum the paper should utilize the resources from the class. All resources used must be listed in the bibliography and any resources quoted, paraphrased, or alluded to must be documented via footnotes formatted according to Turabian.
While your footnotes and bibliography (if you had one) did not count toward the word count for your discussion boards, for this capstone essay both the footnotes and the bibliography count toward the word count. In other words, the 2400 word limit is all-inclusive. You will be penalized if you exceed the limit, so please do not.

Format
Your paper must begin with a title page that includes a paper title, your name, the date, and the course name and number. The second page of your paper must be a table of contents. The last page of your paper must be devoted to your bibliography. The paper must utilize 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with one inch margins. It must be double-spaced rather than triple-spaced between paragraphs and there should be only one space after the end of each sentence.
Any documentation in the body of your paper must be done via footnotes formatted according to Turabian. If you are not familiar with how to do this, simply look it up online. There are many websites that explain Turabian formatting. Footnotes should be single-spaced 10 point Times New Roman font.
Your paper must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. If you submit it as a .pdf or anything other than a Microsoft Word document it will not be graded.

Assignment Instructions: The Interview
Writing Exercise: Interview Summary/Synthesis
For this assignment, you will submit on the FINAL copy as there is no DRAFT option. This assignment is designed to help inform a topic that interests you, and the information your gather here will be used in your Proposal Letter assignment.
________________________________________
For this assignment, you should be interviewing a person who has expertise about a topic you are interested in. Please note that you should be conducting an actual interview; you should now be summarizing an interview conducted by someone else.
Part #1: Choose a Research Topic and an Interviewee
You do not need to submit this portion in writing, but you do need to accomplish this in preparation for your research assignment.
In preparation for your research proposal letter in the next topic, you will need to choose a topic for your proposal. This research proposal letter will be directed to an audience who can create change (Congressperson, business administrator, or other similar audience). In the proposal, you need to suggest a change or a solution to a current problem. Examples of strong proposal topics would be things like funding ideas for an animal shelter, starting a recycling program in a community, suggesting a better plan for public transport, or another idea that interests you. You will be proposing solutions for these issues. Choose a topic that you are passionate about and for which you will be able to develop at least one solution. While this information should be enough for your to choose a topic, please consult the assignment sheet within Topic 7 if you have more questions about this assignment.
Once you choose a topic, it’s time to choose a credible expert to interview on that subject. In other words, you should avoid choosing an interviewee who is a close friend or family member unless that person truly is an expert in the field. This credible expert should have 10+ years of experience in his or her discipline. Choose an interviewee who not only could offer some specific details about the problem but one who may also be able to offer suggestions of a plausible solution. use the information contained in the lesson presentation to secure and conduct a successful interview.
Part #2: Summarize and Synthesize Your Interview
When you summarize and synthesize, you take the smaller pieces (the sections of the interview) and develop them into one cohesive piece. Doing this exercise will help you prepare for the research proposal letter, where you will need to incorporate at least a few ideas from the interview.
To successfully summarize and synthesize, you might find it helpful to follow this sequence for your essay:
1) Provide Background Information:
In your introductory paragraph, introduce your audience to your interviewee. What is his/her name? What is his/her experience? if relevant, where is the interviewee employed?
2) Summarize the Interview:
While you want to avoid the all-too-predictable question and answer format, you should provide information about what you learned from the interview. Take a look at your original questions, group them into categories, and use those categories to build your body paragraph(s). Also, you may note the interviewee’s reactions in your summary as well. Was the interviewee nervous about answering a question? Did he/she seem knowledgeable in the subject matter? Make this summary work for you by including whatever details and responses you feel are important and will help you when you write the research proposal.
3) Synthesize the Interview:
In the conclusion, synthesize the interview. To synthesize just means that you should consider all of the information you gathered from this interview and draw conclusions. What did you learn from the interview? How did the interviewee and/or the interview help you gain a deeper understanding of your topic? Other findings?
No source citations are required for this assignment, but please review the rubric to get a better idea of how you will be assessed.

Write a literary short story. It shouldn’t be strictly autobiographical, though it might emerge from something that you witnessed or experienced yourself. Remember, though, that you are creating a way to connect with your readers by telling them a story they’ll remember. Create notable characters and decide on a point of view for the story. Try to make every detail serve the overall purpose of the story. Be aware of the elements of fiction, like plot, characterization, detail and description, dialogue, setting, point of view, etc.

Then, I’d like you to attach a 1-2 page analysis to the end of your story telling us a little about your process of writing it. How did you get your idea for the story? What were you trying to reach in the reader’s mind when you created the details and the plot of the story? What was most difficult? Which part of the story do you think turned out the best? How does writing a short story help you understand the stories we’ve read in new ways

Exploring Open Data

Assignment Requirements: Please visit https://www.ontario.ca/search/data-catalogue and
select three (3) data sets. You must choose data sets that are unique to you, so the first
step is to identify and “claim” the three sets on the class Blackboard site. Sets that have
already been claimed by classmates will not be accepted (so make sure no one else has
chosen your three sets).
For each data set, complete the sections below (A, B and C). The information in the Section
A should be available on the Ontario government site, while the information for Second B
and C require that you download the data set and view.
Complete the following subsections for each of the three (3) data sets you have claimed
(this also provides a structure for your report). You must use these headings in the report:
Section A: Data Set Details
• Name of data set.
• Describe the format of the data.
• List the time-period captured in the data.
• List when the data set was added to the Open Data portal.
• Describe terms of use (if any):
Section B: Exploring the Data Set
• Describe what is contained in the data set.
• Consider and describe the potential limitations of the data set.
Section C: Reflection on the Data Set
• Discuss how this data could be used.
• State at least one interesting fact or insight about the data set.
Evaluation: Your answers regarding the three (3) data sets will be evaluated based on
accuracy (is the name, time period, etc accurately reported accurate? have you described
what is part of the data set and what the limitations might be?) and the quality of insight
and reflection (is your suggested use of the data set reasonable? Is the suggested use
possible given the specific data set? Is the insight you’ve stated thoughtful and
appropriate?)

Discuss the influences of leadership and power on organizational culture.

Instructions: You are to write a 4 to 5 page paper using the readings provided. You paper should be formatted in APA style and include a title page and reference list. *Students should note that reading and referencing only these key suggested sources is insufficient for a good grade in an assignment.
Specific assessment guidance on presentation, content or structure
1. Word processed, double spaced, Arial 12 Font and number the pages. You must also include a word count.

2. Ensure that you write the assignment in essay format with an introduction, main-body and conclusion. A key feature of an essay should be a continuous narrative throughout your writing. In that, you will not use headings and sub headings to break up the information that you are discussing (as would be the case with a report).

3. An introduction that details the construction of the essay and informs the reader of what to expect to find within the essay

4. A conclusion where you draw the threads of your discussion together and show how you have addressed your aims and objectives.

5. As a minimum requirement you are expected to draw on 10 academic sources (if you do not use 10 ACADEMIC sources, you will lose marks and risk failing this assignment)

What constitutes an academic source?
1) Books found in the library
2) E-books – that are specific to the subject of sociology/the topic you are discussing
3) Journals
4) Official web pages that end in .ac .org .gov
5) Policy papers
6) Papers found on Google scholar

What does not constitute an academic source?
1) Online sociology/ criminology blogs/webpages/essay writing sites/online student rooms
2) General pages found on google (unless they are policy papers/.org/.ac/.gov
3) Articles from the tabloid newspapers (the Sun/the mirror/the Daily Mail)
4) Un-official web pages that are general discussions without being peer reviewed/from a university / from an academic source

You cannot just rely on the core text books; you will need to search for other books/ journals/articles to help you answer the question. You will need to source articles in the library, especially journal articles, as they will provide you with the latest research evidence/arguments.

• You must use the Harvard referencing system to identify the source of all the information used in your assignment. You will find a copy of the latest referencing guidelines on the unit’s BREO site. Also read the section headed ‘Plagiarism and Bad Academic Practice’ in your handbook. For guidance on referencing sources go to the following webpage: http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/guides/a-guide-to-referencing.
