Women’s and Gender Studies Media Comparison
This paper will be done in three phases. First, watch the film “The Greatest Showman” While watching, consider the main
themes, the way in which gender, ability, and agency are depicted in the film, and examples of intersectionality. Second, do a close reading of an excerpt from Eli Clare’s “Freaks and
Queers”. What does Clare tell us about gender, ability, and agency? Finally, write a paper making an argument about how these two sources compare to one another.
Ask yourself how they compare in terms of an argument about the ways in which the subjects
are represented, explored, and explained. You should back up your argument with specific
examples from the text and film.
One of the pressing issues for courts is mandatory sentencing guidelines. Do you believe that those guidelines provide fair sentencing for crimes for the guilty or impose unfair restraints on the judge’s ability to sentence? Support your answer with examples of particular criminal cases.
Until the 1980s, judges generally had wide discretion in handing down sentences. The system’s shift toward punishment brought with it changes in sentencing procedures. State legislatures began adopting sentencing guidelines that legally limited the judges’ discretion. In the past, some judges imposed sentences that were too lenient. Therefore, sentencing guidelines were developed in an effort to bring uniformity and rationality to sentencing and to curb what was perceived to be the excessive power of judges in matters of sentencing.
Currently, many states have their own sentencing guidelines, and the federal system has its own guidelines as well. Federal sentencing guidelines are regulations that lay down a uniform sentencing policy for convicted defendants in the US federal court system.
Tasks:
By the due date assigned, in at least 250 words, post to the Discussion Area your answers to the following questions:
•One of the pressing issues for courts is mandatory sentencing guidelines. Do you believe that those guidelines provide fair sentencing for crimes for the guilty or impose unfair restraints on the judge’s ability to sentence? Support your answer with examples of particular criminal cases.

Write a 3-4 page paper comparing Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy and Kempis, The Imitation of Christ.
Subject: Write a 3-4 page paper comparing Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy and Kempis, The Imitation of Christ.
Compare the approaches of the Hellenistically educated Boethius with the monkish Kempis. How are they specifically similar or different? Think about (but don’t have to include all) their approaches to God, Scripture, good and evil, philosophy, reason and emotion, humanism, etc.
Goal: Understand the critical ideas and themes in Western Civilization, through reading and comprehension of key primary documents.
Format: Double spaced, 12 point font, default 1” margins. Put name and class section in the top right hand corner, and then add a title.
Do not use first person (I, me).
No contractions (can’t).
Watch overgeneralizations such as: people, the church, Americans, etc.
Use evidence from the books, also explain the evidence (and remember to cite).
When referring to a book, simply put in parentheses the author and page number, for example (Boethius, 36).
To write an organized paper it is best to have a clear argument. This is determined by writing a thesis statement in your paper.

RESEARCH REPORT on a social issue
Research report – setting it out.
How you actually write the report is entirely up to you, but you must make it academic in prose, and of course you must have it fully referenced. However you do also need to make sure you follow this format for your 2000 word report please. The word counts are more suggestions than anything else. Any questions please let me know.
Introduction (150 words approx.) – outline the report – what are the key themes? what is your argument? This doesn’t have to be anything grandiose and you can write it prescriptively if you like. But it needs to give me an overview of the thesis and your main points.
Literature Review (500-700 words approx.) – in this section you will overview the main literature in your research – what are some of the major pieces – what are the main themes within that – where is the research pointing in terms of discussion points – what critiques can you make – by the end of this very short piece, I should have a good grasp on the major themes of the research you’ve done into different literature (scholarly resources) and a good sense of what we’re looking at in your work more generally. You can for instance focus on one area – eg gender and homelessness.
Results (400-500 words approx.) – this is the section where you place all your data analyses – what have you found in terms of statistics – show me through tables/graphs – do not just put tables/graphs only here – also include short summations or descriptions about what is important to note within this (NB – tables and graphs do not add to your word count) – what I’m looking for here is good data and good illustration of that.
Discussion (500-700 words approx.) – in this section you have to make sense of your data – this is where literature becomes really important – what are you seeing – what is the argument you would like to make – how can we understand the data – what is the important take home message you want – this is the really important piece of your report – use literature to help you make sense of your results
Conclusion (150 words approx.) – this is where you really only overview what you have done in your report – you can if you feel like it point to further work that you think might need to be done – do not use it as an opportunity to produce more data or ideas though
Reference List – APA standard (NB – doesn’t count to your word limit)
