The essay assignment is to demonstrate how students understand, interpret, articulate and analyze the texts, topics, themes that we have studied this quarter. Textual analysis, students’ clearly defined opinions and weighty quotes are vital for an essay. Please keep in mind critical
thinking, multicultural approaches and historical consciousness in your writing.

Choose one of the following essay prompts. Respond in a typed, 12-point font, doubled-spaced, and page-numbered essay about 4~5 pages in length with 1-inch margins. Provide a title page or header that gives your name, the course number and title, instructors’ names, quarter and year, the prompt you have chosen, the title of your essay, and the date turned in. Write your essay for an audience of your IGE 120 peers. Remember that your reader will be familiar with the readings, but not with your interpretation of specific concepts or events. You will need to analyze
examples to explain your ideas. For format and style, please use D. Hacker’s Manual for reference. When you quote text or use specific information or concepts from course readings, provide the author’s name and page number of the selection in parenthesis after the passage—like this (Friere p. 4).

After you finish writing your paper, write a short letter telling me:
• What do you like most about your paper?
• What are you least satisfied with in your paper?
• What did you learn from writing this paper?

IGE120 is a class of introductory course of higher education and IGE program. How do higher education and IGE contribute to good citizenship and community? Why do we pursue higher education: for personal needs for knowledge, or the community, or both? Relate your personal experience to educational concepts and objectives from IGE Guidebook and from readings by Meiklejohn, Rodriguez, Tan, Hughes, Freire and Hook wherever applicable to you.

In SUMMARY from Syllabus, The essay assignments enable students to examine critically the class reading materials and themes from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints. The essays may involve the interpretation, critical analysis and comparison of as many as (but at least more than two) theme-related reading materials, and examination of particular topics / theme(s) with detailed references to particular class works and library research sources. Persuasive and thoughtful citations from our class readings and library sources must be intensively used to test your ideas, perspectives and arguments. For format and style, please use D. Hacker’s Manual for Reference when you quote text or use specific information from course readings. Your essay must include a bibliography to support your citations and other references. I advise you to carefully read and understand the Prompt you chose and the Core Questions in this syllabus as a basis for your topic focus. The length of essay body is no less than four to five pages though full development of the essay and the topics are far more imperative than format. You paper will be graded on a 6 point scale included pluses and minuses in which 6=A, 5=B, 4=C, and so on. The instructors will evaluate your paper for:

This case you will be studying CableTech Bell Corporation (CTB) which operates in the telecommunications industry. CTB has two divisions: the Phone Division and the Cable
Service Division. The Phone Division manufactures telephones in several plants located in the Midwest.

The Phone Division has been using the same cost accounting system for over 10 years. Explain why its cost accounting system may be outmoded. What factors
determine when a new cost accounting system is warranted?

Many municipalities such as cities and townships are managed by professionals, often referred to as city managers. A city manager is appointed and not elected and serves under the direction and guidance of a city council. You can think of a city manager as the CEO of the city. He or she is responsible for hiring other staff and overseeing the operations of the entire municipality and also reporting to the city council.

Consider the following scenario:

You are the city manager for a town that is experiencing a growth spurt. The current population of 50,000 is projected to exceed 70,000 in 3 years. City services from firefighting to road maintenance will be under pressure during this time. Your city council has asked you to draft a strategic plan outlining what steps you plan to take in the coming months to deal with the growth of the city. You can choose 2–3 areas to work on. For instance, you may want to discuss how you will shore up the emergency response capacity of the city, or how you plan on ensuring that schools have the capacity to house incoming students, or even ways in which you can partner with other cities to obtain services.

Assignment Description

• Draft and post a 500-word outline of your policy proposal addressing 2–3 problems that you think your city will face due to increased population growth. Give some examples of how you intend to address these problems.
• Be sure to address concerns that the city council may have. For instance, they may be concerned about how you will fund the hiring of additional personnel.
• Take into account the dynamics between state and local government authority. Pay careful attention to what areas of responsibility a local government has versus a state or federal entity and likewise, what tools are available to a local municipality.
• Cite 2–3 sources in APA format. These sources should inform your policies. For instance, you can cite a study detailing how another city solved these problems and whether it was successful or not. Or you can cite the founding charter of a city as an example of areas of responsibility you would like as a city manager from the city council to put your plan into action.

 

The purpose of the assignment is to explain the book as you, the reviewer understands it:

Start first with the author. Who is he? What’s his background? Is he qualified to speak as an authority on this subject? What is his attitude toward the subject? For example, if his is a biography of Louis XVI, is he empathetic to and understanding of the challenges he faced or is he essentially dismissive of the monarch? From there the reader of the review has a sense of perspective as he begins.

From here the reviewer identifies what he sees as the thesis. What is it? Does the author provide sufficient evidence to support that main point? Where does he succeed and/or fail? You the reviewer must explain your understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s arguments. References may be made to characters or key moments in the life of the characters in terms of what you see to be the main point of the book. If, for example, the author claims that the French Revolution was the result of mismanagement and timidity on the part of King Louis XVI, then what evidence does he supply to support such a judgment? Does he explain the evidence convincingly? The author may discuss certain events or characters but does he do so in a way that supports his theme/thesis. How does he deal with counter arguments made in books on the same subject before he wrote his? Finally, the reviewer will want to take into consideration the book’s historical setting or its relevance to today, the early 21st century.

A change recommendation for the organization with which you currently are employed. Choose an issue in the organization for which you can make a positive impact.

Use the text reading “Managing Organization Change and Innovation” as the general guideline for preparing your analysis and approach. Your paper should include recommendations for improvement and suggestions for implementation of the recommendations.

The U.S. Supreme Court has, through the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment, incorporated many of the protections and prohibitions contained in the Bill of Rights. By doing so, the U.S. Supreme Court has required that state and local governments obey those portions of the Bill of Rights that have been incorporated. Background on the Schiavo case
What caused Terri Schiavo’s condition?
On February 25, 1990, Terri Schiavo collapsed at her Florida home from what doctors said was a potassium
imbalance. After she collapsed, her brain did not receive oxygen for about five minutes.
The oxygen deprivation caused severe brain damage. Schiavo’s husband, Michael, has said his wife was bulimic,
and the binging and purging of that eating disorder could have caused the potassium imbalance.
In what condition is Terri Schiavo?
Doctors that Michael Schiavo hired have said she is in a persistent vegetative state. That does not mean she
is brain dead. People in a persistent vegetative state cannot think, speak or respond to commands and are not aware
of their surroundings. They may have noncognitive functions and breathing and circulation may remain relatively
intact. Terry Schiavo breathes on her own and blinks.
Doctors that Terri’s parents, Mary and Robert Schindler, hired have said she is not in a vegetative state and has the
capacity to improve with therapy. She has not received physical therapy for more than a decade. Her parents contend
that when she received therapeutic care, she uttered a few one-syllable words. Until March 18, Terri received
nourishment and hydration through a tube that placed the nutrients directly in her stomach.
What is Terri’s mental capacity?
David Gibbs, an attorney for the Schindlers, said Terri has the mental capacity of a 6-month-old. George Felos,
Michael Schiavo’s attorney, has said she lacks all mental capacity and spinal fluid occupies the space where her
cerebral cortex was.
What is the settlement to which her parents and husband refer?
In 1992, a Florida jury awarded Michael Schiavo $300,000 for loss of consortium as part of the medical malpractice
suit he filed. The jurors also awarded $700,000 to Terri Schiavo.
Where is Terri’s money, how much remains and who controls it?
The $700,000 for Terri Schiavo went into a trust over which her husband has sole control. Felos said his client used
the money for Terri’s medical care and his legal expenses, and that the money ran out about three years ago.
Why does her husband get to decide Terri Schiavo’s fate instead of her parents?
Florida law specifies that the spouse of an incapacitated adult is that person’s guardian. In 1993, the Schindlers
petitioned the court to remove their son-in-law as Terri’s guardian. They lost.
Why have the Schindlers said Michael Schiavo should not be their daughter’s guardian?
They believe that there is a conflict of interest because Michael Schiavo lives with his girlfriend and has two children
with her. They have contended that he cannot uphold the best interest of his wife while living in what they describe as
an adulterous relationship. Michael Schiavo has said he is removing his wife’s feeding tube as part of keeping his
promise to her that he would not allow artificial means to preserve her life. He has stated that his new family does not
affect his feelings for his wife because he can love more than one person.
What happened to Terri Schiavo?
On March 18, 2005 the local Florida courts allowed the removal of Schiavo’s feeding tubes, and on March 31, she
died. An autopsy performed after she died indicated that brain damage was so severe, it would have been
impossible for Schiavo to ever emerge from the persistent vegetative state she had been in for the past 15 years.

During this course, you have begun to understand that a dissertation is a multi-faceted research project. You may have heard of the term ABD (all but dissertation). There are a sizeable number of doctoral students who have completed their coursework, passed their comprehensive examinations, but never have completed their dissertations.
You may wonder how this might happen. For example, were these students who did not complete their dissertations really scholarly impostors who did not possess sufficient knowledge and skills? What can you do to avoid this?
This assignment requires you to interview two people who have successfully completed doctoral programs.
Your goal in this assignment is to carefully consider and organize the body of your paper around these three key ideas:
• What most assisted your interviewees in completing their major research projects or dissertations?
• What challenges did your interviewees experience?
• What specific recommendations do your interviewees have for successful completion?
Use the following guidelines as you conduct your interview to help you achieve the above three goals:
• Select individuals to interview, if possible, who are not AU faculty or staff members, since one purpose of this assignment is to broaden your perspectives regarding conducting doctoral research.
• Each interview should take 30–45 minutes, depending on how responsive your interviewees are.
• You may conduct your interviews in person or by phone.
Prior to meeting your interviewees, develop 10–15 interview questions you will ask each of them that will hep you to address the above three goals. It is important to ask the same questions to both.
• The first question or two should help you understand their research topics and why the topics were of interest to your interviewees. In addition it could be very useful to your research to ask questions like these: What tips do they have for locating good materials, especially research articles? How long did it take the interviewee from start to finish? What resources were required, such as technology, postage, and other costs? Another important area of information concerns the role of the committee chair and the committee members.
• Several questions should be asked to help you explore what assisted each person the most in completing the research or dissertation.
• Trying to understand the challenges each interviewee faced will also require several questions.
• As you conduct each interview, you may ask related, follow up questions to help you better understand each interviewee’s response, such as: “Could you give me a specific example of what you meant when you said …?” or “Could you provide a little more detail about …?” This will help you provide details in your paper as well as enhance your understanding of the challenges faced.
• Toward the end of your interview, ask what recommendations each interviewee could provide to help you be successful in the completion of your dissertation.
• In order to capture the information from the interview, be prepared to take detailed notes. Some students even request permission to tape record their interviews so they can replay and listen to them to better understand the information provided by each interviewee.
Collate the information gathered from your interviews. Write a three- to four-page analysis comparing and contrasting the information from the two interviews. Do not present the analysis in a question and answer format.

Consider the following as you write your paper:
• Introductory Paragraph: Begin your paper with a purpose statement and a map of how you intend to organize your paper. Using the 3 main goals listed above as broad themes/categories with sub headings could be a most useful way to organize this paper. Be sure to also include in this introductory paragraph the name of each or pseudonym [if confidentiality is needed] as well as the basic nature of their research or dissertation study.
• Your paper should be an analysis of the interviews and a comparison of their experiences, not just a summary of each specific question asked.
