Literacy Development Through Play-Based Activities

Week 7: Literacy Development Through Play-Based Activities
A young preschooler stands on the playground, brandishing a paper towel roll as his “sword” and claiming victory over the land. As he jumps down from the stairs, he walks over to two children who are rubbing sticks together, making an imaginary fire. As he joins them, he begins to “warm his hands,” mimicking campfire conversations he had when he went camping with his own family. The other two children join him in this dialogue, talking about yummy marshmallows, shining stars, and comfy sleeping bags.
Though only a few minutes long, how might this type of play strengthen early literacy experiences? Furthermore, how might these interactions support each child in his or her language development journey?
In this Discussion, you explore the importance of play in language acquisition and development. You also examine the five essential components of reading.
To prepare
Review the Reading is Fundamental article titled “Home-to-School Connections: The Five Essential Components of Reading” (n.d.-a) in this module’s Learning Resources. As you review the article, consider what you may already know about phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Then, select one age group (infants, toddlers, preschool, or kindergarten/primary) and explore the Reading Rockets website and the Zero to Three website, also in the Learning Resources. With your selected stage in mind, identify center-based activities that might use play to enhance language and literacy.
By Day 3 of Week 7
Post the following: Describe two to three center-based activities that use play to enhance language acquisition, language development, and literacy. Explain how each activity might foster one or more of the five essential components of reading. Then, explain whether these activities are developmentally appropriate for the stage you have selected and why.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:
• Share how your colleagues’ selected activities might be modified or improved upon for a different stage and/or different learning needs, such as children whose second language is English.
• Share how you, as an early childhood professional, intend to integrate play into your current practice in an effort to enhance language development and acquisition.
Cite appropriate references in APA format to substantiate your thinking.
The Five Essential Components of Reading

Reading with children and helping them practice specific reading components can dramatically improve their ability to read. Scientific research shows that there are five essential components of reading that children must be taught in order to learn to read. Adults can help children learn to be good readers by systematically practicing these five components:
• Recognizing and using individual sounds to create words, or phonemic awareness. Children need to be taught to hear sounds in words and that words are made up of the smallest parts of sound, or phonemes.
• Understanding the relationships between written letters and spoken sounds, or phonics. Children need to be taught the sounds individual printed letters and groups of letters make. Knowing the relationships between letters and sounds helps children to recognize familiar words accurately and automatically, and “decode” new words.
• Developing the ability to read a text accurately and quickly, or reading fluency. Children must learn to read words rapidly and accurately in order to understand what is read. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically. When fluent readers read aloud, they read effortlessly and with expression. Readers who are weak in fluency read slowly, word by word, focusing on decoding words instead of comprehending meaning.
• Learning the meaning and pronunciation of words, or vocabulary development. Children need to actively build and expand their knowledge of written and spoken words, what they mean and how they are used.
• Acquiring strategies to understand, remember and communicate what is read, or reading comprehension strategies. Children need to be taught comprehension strategies, or the steps good readers use to make sure they understand text. Students who are in control of their own reading comprehension become purposeful, active readers.

The Limits of Protest in Colonial America: The Stamp Act

The Limits of Protest in Colonial America:
The Stamp Act

Intended to raise funds to pay for the ongoing cost of defending the colonies, the Stamp Act of 1765 was widely unpopular in Britain’s North American colonies as well as the Caribbean. In Britain, public demonstrations of protest or celebration had long been recognized as a legitimate way for subjects, most of whom did not have the vote, to voice their political opinions. In late 1765, Stamp Act protests were organized in communities including Boston, New York, and Charleston (which was then called Charlestown or Charles Town), as well as in Nova Scotia (Canada) and Britain’s Caribbean colonies.

I. Sources

I have attached all the three sources to be utilized.

II. Topic

Comparing the three communities, the paper should develop an argument in response to one of the following topics. The first question in each set should become the basis of your argument; the supporting questions are intended to suggest ways to think about the evidence. You don’t have to attempt to answer all of the questions within a topic.

• Does there appear to have been an agreement within the British colonies about the limits of political protest?
o Did protestors attack people? Property? Homes? Did they use deadly force? What types of symbolic actions did they take, and why would these have been effective? Stepping back from the action, were there actions that they did not take?

III. Formatting and Citations

• Should be double-spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins.
• I am providing all three sources that you must utilize. They must be used for in-text citation

Footnoting Newspaper Articles (Chicago)

All of these articles are unsigned. The correct format for each is:

Events in the Caribbean:
“Philadelphia, November 28,” Pennsylvania Gazette, November 28, 1765.
Events in Charleston:
“South Carolina,” Pennsylvania Gazette, January 2, 1766.

Events in New York:
“New-York, November 4,” South Carolina Gazette; and Country Journal, December 17, 1765.

Multiple Works in One Footnote
When you refer to two or more works in a single sentence, combine the references in one footnote, listing them in the order in which they appear in sentence, and separating them from each other by a semi-colon.

In New York, protestors attacked the Deputy Governor’s coach, while in Charleston, they targeted the tax collector’s private home.

Positive Psychology-Wellbeing / Peer Mediation

Title: Peer Mediation and Positive Psychology – A strong connection

Literature review + Empirical Evidence

Summary: This project is indented to reveille and underline the importance of Peer Mediation (PM) program in children’s lives during their school life and the positive impact that it has in their wellbeing in general. Peer Mediation has its origin in the USA however many other countries (including UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa and Norway and recently Greece) have also introduced this program in their schools.
Peer mediation is a process where pupils mediating disputes between pupils. “Usually a whole year group is given some training in conflict resolution after which pupils who are interested are invited to apply to go on to further training. Once trained, the peer mediators work in pairs, invariably with pupils younger than themselves.”
The method and the tools that are being used during the peer mediation training along with the structure and the result of a mediation session are elements that help children feel happy, confident, resilient, optimist, goal oriented, contributing greatly to their overall wellbeing.
And the scope of this research /review is to investigate and present how peer mediation and positive psychology (PP) theory are strongly connected nominating on one hand PM as a great PP intervention and on the other hand PP theories as great tools for PM training.

Main PP theories Should be discussed especially the ones related to Wellbeing

Peer Mediation as a method of conflict resolution should be discussed

And then based on the literature review the strong link between the two should be highlighted.

Collective Bargaining—Employee Wages and Benefits

6-2 Final Project Milestone Two: Short Paper: Collective Bargaining—Employee Wages and Benefits
Assignment

Students should reflect on the Discussion Topic from the previous module and their experience with the negotiating process. This short paper should include:
• A copy of the agreed-upon collective bargaining agreement section (posted in the discussion topic)
• A personal account of the negotiating process. This account needs to include:
o A listing of the key challenges or points of friction.
o An analysis of the negotiating principles used by both parties and the BATNA of their own position.
o A review on the success of interest-based compared to distributive bargaining principles.
o An analysis of the strength of the other positions – were their positions weak and not supported well or just the opposite?
o A reflection on how this negotiation session was different than the first one completed under Milestone One in Module Three.
o What might need to be changed to be more successful in follow-on negotiating sessions?
o A conclusion about the outcome – did it favor one side or the other?
This short paper will be graded separately using the Milestone Two Guidelines and Rubricdocument. Feedback should be applied to the final project.

Elections and Campaigns Assignment

Some U.S. House districts, such as U.S. House District 7 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., are overwhelmingly Republican. Drawn to include western parts of Houston, the district was represented by George H.W. Bush, who went on to serve as President of the United States, then Bill Archer, who served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

First elected in 2000, Congressman John Culberson (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. has represented District 7 for the past 15 years. Though widely regarded as one of the most conservative members of Congress, Culberson had to defeat primary opponents who said he wasn’t conservative enough.

Meanwhile, to the surprise of many local political observers, Hillary Clinton carried District 7 over Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

This fall Congressman Culberson will face a challenge from Democratic nominee Lizzie Fletcher (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

For this assignment, you’re going to become a campaign manager.

Choose one of these two candidates (Culberson or Fletcher) and design a campaign to win this fall’s congressional election. Write this assignment as a 2 – 5 page memo (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (but with cited sources) from you, the campaign manager, to your candidate. Outline the race for them, how much money you think they need to raise, how you will raise it for them, what you propose to spend it on, what issues they should talk about, how you want to deliver their message, etc.

Some things to keep in mind:

The 7th District is pretty Republican. I see two possible factors that could make this year different. One is the increasing unpopularity of the always-volatile President Donald Trump, especially in a generally Republican district that voted against him. Another is Hurricane Harvey – which hit the 7th District especially hard. Action by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flooded hundreds of houses in Culberson’s district, and victims want somebody to blame.
Cong. Culberson is an incumbent seeking reelection. Read in your text about the advantages of incumbency.
Ms Fletcher is a challenger, but challengers have certain advantages. Culberson has a 17-year record in Congress to criticize. Fletcher doesn’t. Congress, as an institution, isn’t well liked (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
The 7th District is pretty conservative. Should Fletcher downplay her liberal views to try to get anti-Trump Republicans to cross over and vote for her, or play to the Democratic base to try to drive up Democratic turnout?
Fletcher won the Democratic nomination in a bitter primary election, defeating Bernie Sanders acolyte Laura Moser in a huge disappointment to labor unions and the Democratic Party’s left wing.
Not everybody who lives in district will vote in this election. Some are under 18 years old, or they’re not U.S. citizens. Some simply won’t register or show up. How do you target people who are going to vote in this election?
What sort of people live in your candidate’s district. What motivates them?
What is your candidate’s background and experience? What will be his or her key issues?
How much money will you need? How will you raise it? How will you spend it?
This can be a challenging assignment, but it can also be a lot of fun. Keep in mind that campaigning is more art than science, and that there are few absolutely right or wrong answers. If I asked five campaign professionals to do this assignment for the same candidate, I would probably get five totally different campaign strategies (and they’d charge me a lot of money).

Hint: Remember, this is a memo to your client, not an essay about your client. Talk to your client. Do not spend the first page telling them where they were born, where they went to college or how many kids they have – they know this already. Talk to them about your strategy to win the election for them.

The evolution of HIV infection into a chronic disease has implications across all clinical care settings. Every nurse should be knowledgeable about the prevention, testing, treatment, and chronicity of the disease in order to provide high-quality care to people with or at risk for HIV. It’s important, therefore, to have an understanding of the changing epidemiology of the disease, the most recent testing recommendations, developments in screening technology, the implications of aging with HIV infection, and the nursing implications of the ongoing epidemic.https://www.nursingcenter.com/cearticle?an=00000446-201003000-00019&Journal_ID=54030&Issue_ID=982121. We live a world that is every changing. What is meant by that is HIV is a disease that changed with time. It was really known in the 80’s. You could not turn the TV or listen to radio without an ad about HIV. The disease still exists today but really not spoken about as much. Almost as there is a cure. As nurse we should continue to educate to public on how HIV is transmitted, HIV prevention, new meds that have been issued and living with HIV is not a death penalty.
The nurse’s role in health promotion, coupled with disease specific websites, enhance the learning of the general public about HIV? Nurses are able to assess patient that are at high risk for getting HIV. It is essential that nurses have the skills and knowledge to effectively care for persons who are living with HIV in the general public today. It is also important for nurses be able to identify the risk factors that put patients at greater risk in getting disease. When nurses care for persons who are living with or at risk for HIV infection they see the impact of social determinants of health and client well‐being every day. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2861787/ With early diagnosis and treatment, it can have a positive impact and a better outcome for to patient living with HIV.

Part 1 :
Create a Socratic dialogue:Start by giving the setting and a desсrіption of the two characters who are speaking (the entire dialogue will be 3.5 pages long). In it, one character persuades another character to accept his/her point of view.
Format it as if you were writing a play; double-space the dialogue as usual.
Employ 7-10 of the rhetorical techniques you learned from our textbook( link below)

Part 2 is your analysis of your Socratic dialogue. Yes, you will write a mini-essay (3.5 pages, double-spaced) that deconstructs your own writing. It should be a pretty easy write, considering your inside knowledge of the author′s writing process!
Dig deeply into minutia in the dialogue. Analyze closely organization, diction, rhetorical techniques, figurative language, realism of the dialogue, and so on.
You may use terms from the Toulmin Model. Be sure to set up your analysis just as you would a ″real″ essay, with intro, body, and conclusion paragraphs.
As usual, each body paragraph should be structured around transitions, topic sentences, major/minor supporting evidence, and concluding sentences.
Here is an imperfect sample essay, part 3 and 4 in the essay is The sample.
