Is love or hate a stronger emotion

Annotated Bibliography Assignment:

All chapters and page numbers refer to Rules for Writers.

Annotated Bibliographies help students organize their research when they write their papers that incorporate secondary sources. In Rules for Writers handbook, read Chapter 51: “Managing Information; Taking Notes Responsibly” on pages 408-415 and Chapter 52: “Evaluating Sources” on pages 416-430. Please note that all sources used in writing for this course will come from the databases. Read the information about “Web Sources” for other courses that might allow sources that are found by using a search engine like Google.

Research the databases and find two (2) scholarly articles on an issue in one of the following areas for your second annotated bibliography:

Love or Hate (which is a stronger emotion?)

Romantic Love (American culture and romantic love) (individuals feel pressure to find love)

Or any other topic/issue that you can use in your argumentative essay.

*NOTE: These topics are broad. Narrow to find an issue that will help your essay’s argument.

Choose the essay prompt that you want to write your essay, knowing that the secondary source will support your argument. Briefly, here are the prompts (more detailed requirements to the essay will follow): Choose ONE (1) prompt below to write an argumentative essay:

1. “Love or Hate”: Is love or hate a stronger emotion? Use examples from these stories, as well as research, to support your argument.

–OR—

Topic: “Romantic Love”: Argue that because our culture overemphasizes romantic love, individuals feel pressured to find love, sometimes in the wrong places. Use examples from these stories, as well as research, to support your argument.
Thus, use your research skills to find informative and useful articles. Do not settle for the first articles that appear on the search list. Spend time researching. Remember: The scholarly articles must come from our databases.

Click on library on the left panel to begin your search. At Del Mar, Beacon seems to be the best search tool, so begin there. Beacon will search all the databases for you. If you need help, you may call the reference librarians at 698-1311 or use the “Chat” option on their home page. Check the library hours and do not wait until the last minute to seek help. Refer to syllabus for password information.
Requirements for Articles (Sources):

Scholarly article must come from Del Mar’s databases.
Scholarly article must have an author (or authors).
Scholarly article must have a title.
Scholarly article should be at least one page.
A scholarly article is NOT a blog, a book review, a discussion posting, or just an abstract.
Scholarly article may be in a book.
Use the database’s citation generator to generate a 2016 MLA citation, but remember to read “Research Tip” on page 409 in your handbook. The citation may include errors. One of the most common errors is that correct MLA capitalization is not used in the titles. Use your handbook. Pay close attention to examples in the handbook.

7. One of your secondary sources may be Laura Kipnis’s “Against Love” or Meghan O’Rouke’s “The Marriage Trap.” These two articles are found in your Arguing about Literature text in the “Why Marry?” cluster in the Chapter 10: “Love.”

In Rules for Writers handbook, read 52f: “Construct an Annotated Bibliography” on pages 427- 430. Follow correct 2016 MLA: heading, header, font, spacing, and the title: Annotated Bibliography. NOTE: Double space throughout and add header and heading even though the example on page 430 is single-spaced and does not have a header or a heading. Also, the example on page 430 is for a journal, not a database example. Look on page 479 in your handbook for an example of an article found in a database—C. And remember that 2016 MLA requires a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or a URL address. *Review “Information to Collect for a Working Bibliography” on page 411 and Chapter 56b: “MLA List of Works Cited” pages 468-512.

Open your handbook to page 428 and follow the writing guide for an annotated bibliography.

Here are some additional helpful hints:

To double-check the generated MLA citation, use Chapters 56b “MLA List of Works Cited” on pages 468 – 512. PLEASE NOTE: Page 471 “Dates”: You only use an accessed date if the source has none. And if you use a date, pay close attention on how it is written.

Your first sentence (or first sentences) will be a summary of the article. You may have one to four (1- 4) sentences for the summary. (The example on page 430 has four.)
After the summary, you should write one-two (1-2) sentences evaluating the article for bias and relevance.
If you choose to quote, make sure to use quotation marks correctly and to follow correct MLA in-text citations. In your handbook, refer to Chapter 55: “Integrating Sources” beginning on page 445 and Chapter 56a: “Documenting Sources in MLA Style” beginning on page 458.
NOTE: If your article has page numbers, usually a PDF, use them in the in-text parenthetical citation. Do not use the printer’s page numbers. HTML articles do not require page numbers.
End with one – two (1-2) sentences evaluating how the source will help your essay.

The Power and Limits of Storyteling

PROMPT: The Power and Limits of Storyteling

Interrogate the power of storytelling in the novel, What is the What, as a means of connecting with others and of effecting change. What do you think is the effectiveness and / or limites of a story, such as Valentino’s? Consider the ways in which Valentino demonstrates his belief in the power of storytelling as well as the impact of his stories on others. Support your ideas with specific examples from the novel. You must also include one quote from Adichie’s Ted Talk “The Dangers of a Single Story” in your reponse. (Do not use “I” as you still can convey your opinion in 3rd person language).

Justifying an Evaluation

1) Choose a subject for your evaluation. Here are some ideas that you may choose from: a local restaurant, a food truck, a bar or cocktail lounge, a public figure, a professional athlete, a community/state/national leader (not necessarily a politician), a film, a video, a painting, a photograph, an advertisement, a travel destination, a park, a university, a zoo, a vehicle, or an airline. You may choose to review The Laramie Project, a play running at Delgado’s Timothy K. Baker Theater Sept. 20 – Oct. 7. Ultimately, you are free to evaluate any subject, but every student must discuss his/her topic with me before writing. Keep in mind: your reader may be unfamiliar with your subject; they may already have an opinion on it; their opinion might vastly differ from yours. Consider these possibilities early on in the process.
2) Next, break down your subject into its most important criteria. For example: Criteria for evaluating a music video might include visuals, music, lyrics, choreography, special effects, editing, themes, or narrative.
3) Analyze the subject’s value in each criterion. Use examples to support your analysis. Sample scenario: I am evaluating a science fiction novel. I decide to evaluate the novel based on the criteria of language, character, plot, and genre. First, I assess the author’s use of language: the author’s description of the world is vivid but meandering. I then use two or three examples from the novel to support this statement. Next, I examine character: the novel’s heroine is complex and realistic, but her speech rings false. I proceed to support this estimation with more examples. Third, I appraise the plot: full of surprising twists and turns but disconnected at certain important junctures. Again, I use examples from the novel to back up my analysis. Finally, I consider the novel’s genre: Although it is marketed as hard science fiction, I identify several archetypal devices of the classic mystery novel to be skillfully integrated. At last, I support my final observation with more examples taken directly from the subject.
4) Synthesize your analysis into an overall judgment. You will assert this judgement (or main idea) in your thesis statement. Is your subject effective/ineffective? Successful/unsuccessful? Overrated/underrated? Worthwhile/not worthwhile? To continue my sample scenario from above: Adding up all my thoughts about the novel under various criteria, I assert that overall, the novel is deftly written with an artful hand, save for the few rookie mistakes of a young writer. Remember your audience; your judgement may depend on what your reader values most. If your audience most likely agrees with your judgment already, then you should choose a different topic.
5) Step into your readers’ shoes and respond to some objections they may raise about your judgement or analysis. For example: Another reader of this novel might find its cyborg crimelord antagonist to be flat or one-dimensional. I acknowledge this objection and counterargue that the author intended this effect for the antagonist in order to contrast the protagonist’s complexity, thematically reflecting that she is the only organic being in a society of machines.
6) You must organize your evaluation into a clear, logical structure with smooth transitions and a progressive arrangement of ideas.

Quantitative Mini-Proposal
**use the topics of addiction OR lgbt population
(https://www.bl.uk/business-and-ip-centre/articles/what-are-typical-quantitative-research-questions) –more information on quantitative data
Assignment Description
As a counselor or therapist, you will regularly use the professional literature to inform your work. Many of the important questions that you will have as your career evolves will be answered by researchers conducting quantitative studies. The quantitative designs help generate the knowledge base that becomes the evidence behind our best practices.
For this assignment, you will create a mini research proposal. As you review the media piece, think through a possible quantitative study. Your work on this assignment will demonstrate that you understand the importance of the alignment of the elements of a study and how they work together.
Assignment Instructions
In preparation for this assignment, you viewed the Blooming Park: Quantitative and Qualitative Research Questions media piece, which provided an example for first steps in creating a research proposal (PLEASE SEE KATE Nguyen example below). Think about a problem in counseling practice that could be researched using a quantitative approach. Create a mini research proposal that addresses the problem that you identified. Your proposal must include these elements:
• Mini-literature review. Include a review of three recent empirical sources (required) and one non-empirical source.
• Research question. This specific question should be written in a way that it could be answered through quantitative data; this is the question that will be answered by the proposed study.
• Research design. Identify the research design for the proposed study. Choose from correlational, experimental, quasi-experimental, time-series, and survey.
• Sampling plan. Describe your proposed sampling strategy, including the population from which the sample would come and how many participants you would include.
• Data collection plan. Identify data that you would collect in your study and describe any instruments that you would use. Explain how you would collect the quantitative data that would answer your research question.
• Data analysis plan. Explain how you would analyze the data that you collected.
• Ethical and cultural concerns. Identify ethical and cultural concerns that may be present in the proposed study.
• Alternative considerations. Describe how the problem that you investigated might be addressed by using a mixed methods approach. Explain whether you believe that would be a stronger approach or not, in this particular situation.

Submission Requirements
• Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
• Length: 6 pages MINIMUM, not counting cover page and reference page
• Number of references: Minimum of three peer-reviewed empirical journal articles that are no more than seven years old.
• APA Style: Include a reference page in the current APA style at the end of your paper.
• Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Case Study on Transformational Leadership

You are to respond to the following questions based on identified leadership style. You are to apply the relevant theoretical concepts and case materials in your response. Papers are to be 3-5 pages in length and must be in narrative form (no Q&A):
1. Provide a synopsis of the case (a summary that reflects the 5K foot view of the case)
2. If you were consulting with the HTE board of directors soon after Harold started making changes, what would you advise then regarding Harold’s leadership from a transformational perspective?
3. Did Harold have a clear vision for HTE? Was he able to implement it?
4. How effective was Harold as a change agent and social architect for HTE?
Responses must be in either APA/MLA format and uploaded as a .doc, .docx, or pdf file. A great resource for MLA and other writing formats is the Purdue Owl at Purdue University.
Case analyses are due in Canvas by the date and time indicated, the night before the class discussion on the leadership topic. Papers submitted during the 48 hour grace period will be assessed a late penalty equal to a one letter grade deduction (B+, or 89.9%). As a general rule, papers are not accepted after the grace period ends. Papers will be evaluated against the AACU rubric.

Mathematical Economics Assignment on Arnold Harberger, “Monopoly and Resource Allocation

In his article, Harberger makes a seminal empirical attempt to assess the size of the “allocative and welfare effects of monopoly” in the U.S. economy, just before the Great Depression. Based on a number of simplifying assumptions, Harberger determines an average monopoly price increase and the resulting deadweight-loss from monopoly in the manufacturing sector as a percentage of GNP. Deadweight-losses are since sometimes referred to as ‘Harberger-triangles’. The assignment (specified in more detail below) is to critically review Arnold Harberger’s classic article. For that purpose, you will first have to trace the steps in his analysis. The questions below will help you to understand their logic. The answers to the questions are tentative and meant to provide you with key insights into the text containing the main ideas, which will help you to write your essay on this paper, using mathematical economics.

Short essay question
In his article, Harberger concludes that: “Our economy emphatically does not seem to be a monopoly capitalism in big red letters” (page 87). On the basis of your understanding of Harberger’s analysis, you are to critically assess this conclusion. Is it warranted, in that it follows logically from his study? To what extent does the conclusion depend on the particular assumptions and compar- isons he makes? Also, is the estimate of the welfare loss really conservative, as Harberger claims, or maybe also here and there rather downwardly biased by his research approach? You are to explain your answers in a fluent review article of the paper.
To help you organize your thinking, below are a few hints. It helps if you visualize your analysis in a figure like Harberger’s Figure 1 on page 78.

Individual Project: Letter of Support or Opposition to Proposed Law

Individual Project: Letter of Support or Opposition to Proposed Law 8 points
As noted in the Course Schedule each student shall post in the dropbox full 1-2 page letter of support or opposition to a “proposed” (currently pending) health related law (i.e, Global preferred but Federal, State or Local will be accepted) via Appropriate Assignment Folder/Drop Box. I recommend a 2 page letter as it will allow you to fully express yourself
a. Each student shall use a “proposed” (pending) law. The proposal shall be current awaiting approval anywhere globally as long as it is health related. Students may find proposed legislation globally, in the United States, individual States, County or City/Town. Proposed legislation may be obtained by requesting copies of upcoming agendas from the respective legislative body. For local (county and city laws) they are called “proposed” ordinances (do not use resolutions since they are legally deemed only temporary measures subject to change). At the Federal and State levels there are various sites and Group should begin with congressional or legislative committee agendas to find out what is being considered. A good place to start is by watching the news. Remember: health related is a very broad term (e.g., seat belts, obesity, gun laws etc) For Florida laws a good resource to begin with can be found at: http://www.thefloridacurrent.com/index.cfm?catid=56..
b. The form of the Letter of Support or Opposition to a “proposed” (pending) law shall be similar to that found in the Additional Resources section of Blackboard on how to write letters of support or opposition. Additionally, the letter shall address briefly in the narrative substantive arguments of concerned interest groups taking the opposite position or are opposing the “pending law.”
The letter shall:
• be properly addressed to an appropriate legislative official; (this could be found on the actual document, if not research the pending law you have chosen and see to whom you can address it too.
• include a subject line identifying the subject of the letter and the direction you desire the elected official to side on (e.g., RE: Passage of HB xxxx);
• all statements in the narrative shall be factual
• all sources shall be properly cited and referenced in APA Style (see: Group Project below for more on APA Style). Authoritative sources are defined as books, peer reviewed journals, education and government sites as well as non-partisan national or international organizations (such as WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS etc)
a. Grading Rubric: In order to receive full points this Project submission shall:be timely submitted
1. properly identify proposed legislation
2. submit a 1-2 page maximum length letter properly addressed to the appropriate legislative elected official
3. include a subject line identifying the subject of the letter and the direction you desire the elected official to side on
4. the letter shall provide the elected official with statistics and authoritative sources to support your oppsotion or favor
5. properly cite and reference all sources APA style and
6. the narrative shall be factually
Penalties for late submissions: If this assignment is not submitted upon the due date a zero will be the final grade
