Current Event Discussion Questions-use these as a guide to introduce your article, to group members, as well as write your critical summary analysis of the political events, covered.
1. What level, branch, individual, agency, group, organization…etc. is discussed, and how does it relate to federal government and politics.
2. Why is this relevant? Is there are certain group, demographic, population, that this is more/less relevant to?
3. Why is what is going on unusual and unexpected.-Refer back to your independent response to the prompt question: What is the purpose and necessity of government
4. What direct or indirect impact can affect the readers?
5. Describe the type of emotions it inflicts, from all angles, political ideologies and beliefs. Compare and contrast these possible emotional effects, and explain in terms of the different types of possible consequences or concerns of the people, places, politics, power that they could inflict emotional responses from. Are these effects realistic concerns? Is government’s involvement, or lack of regulation, consistent with your beliefs about what the necessity and purpose of government is?
6. The magnitude of the story is newsworthy. What are the stakes, risks costs and benefits. Basically, so what? Why should we are anybody else care, especially those of us who are not directly impacted?

The course project will be a critique and application of the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), arguably a more complex and inclusive ecological measure of progress and well being than the current measures being used to characterize economic and social well-being such as Gross Domestic Product and the Human Development Index.

The following articles include arguments for applying GPI and offer examples of comprehensive applications of GPI; these should serve as the basis of your own examination and critique of the GPI approach to achieving sustainable development:

Gross domestic product (GDP) — “the total market value of the goods and services produced by a country’s economy during a specified period of time. It includes all final goods and services — that is, those that are produced by the economic agents located in that country regardless of their ownership and that are not resold in any form. It is used throughout the world as the main measure of output and economic activity” (Encylopedia Britannica online).

Ecological Footprint — “The simplest way to define ecological footprint would be to call it the impact of human activities measured in terms of the area of biologically productive land and water required to produce the goods consumed and to assimilate the wastes generated” (WWF online).

Human Development Index (HDI) — “The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living. The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices for each of the three dimensions” (Human Development Reports, UN)

Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare (ISEW) — “like the GPI, this metric measures personal consumption in terms of adding public non-defensive expenditures; subtracting private defensive expenditures; adding capital formation; adding services from domestic labour; subtracting costs of environmental degradation; and subtracting depreciation of natural capital” (Wikiprogress online).

Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) — “a metric used to measure the economic growth of a country. It is often considered as a replacement to the more well known gross domestic product (GDP) economic indicator. The GPI indicator takes everything the GDP uses into account, but also adds other figures that represent the cost of the negative effects related to economic activity (such as the cost of crime, cost of ozone depletion and cost of resource depletion, among others). The GPI nets the positive and negative results of economic growth to examine whether or not it has benefited people overall” (Investopedia online).

…the GPI as Hamilton (1999) applied it to the Australian economy

According to Hamilton, the GPI (or ISEW) “attempts an approximation of sustainable consumption by setting itself two tasks:

…….1. to define and measure ‘consumption’ in a way that provides a better approximation of actual well-being than the simple measure of marketed goods and services that appears in the national accounts; and

…….2. to account for the sustainability of consumption by incorporating measures of changes in the value of capital stocks” (p14).

…and here is an example of how to foster bottom-up decsion-making that incorporates community values and approaches to problem solving.

(II) Wilson, J. and Peter Tyedmers, 2013, “Rethinking What Counts. Perspectives on Wellbeing and Genuine Progress Indicator Metrics from a Canadian Viewpoint”, Sustainability, Vol. 5, pp187-202.

“[There is] an entrenched familiarity and reliance on traditional economic indicators among established organizations as a barrier preventing wider adoption of GPI metrics. The System of National Accounts has been in use and evolving since WWII. Coming up with an international standard for GPI-type accounting and protocols is a daunting task. Critics of the Alberta GPI accused the work of indicator selection bias (ie. picking indicators that would make Alberta’s progress look poor) and giving equal weight to each of the 51 indicators in the Alberta GPI. The sentiment was that economic indicators should be prioritized (emphasis added)…[and] in the United States (we presume this applies to Canada as well) political interference from lobby groups undermines the development and adoption of new metrics. Many industries feel threatened that changing the emphasis of what we measure will lead to public sentiment and policies that ultimately affect how they operate. Whether it is political interference, society’s general malaise for change, or the difficulty in designing new metrics and models, meaningful progress towards suitable alternatives has been disturbingly slow. Critics have been questioning the merits of economic growth for over half a century” (emphasis added) (p196-197).

(2) by incorporating some of the issues and recommendations described in the documentary The End of Poverty IF APPROPRIATE TO YOUR TOPIC;

(3) along with ANY environmental concerns associated with the global village that we will be discussing in class;
(4) to make a thoughtful and convincing argument for applying the GPI as a way of addressing the following topic in the specified location

#The written project should consist of an essay of approximately 1500 words that clearly and concisely presents your arguments and conclusions regarding the usefulness of applying this ecological measure to help achieve some level of sustainable development relevant to the topic you have chosen to investigate. Refer to the course outline regarding research resources, in-text referencing and bibliographic requirements.

Case Study

A 22-year-old woman reports being “sick with the flu” for the past 8 days. She is vomiting several times every day, having difficulty keeping liquids or food down, and has been using more than the recommended dose of antacids in an attempt to calm the nausea. She has become severely dehydrated. After fainting at home, she was taken to a local hospital. An arterial blood gas sample was drawn and then an IV was placed to help rehydrate her. The arterial blood gas revealed the following:

Write a message to the Director of HR, Mary Jenkins, requesting an intern (accounting major, if possible) for your department. Do not simply repeat the points just outlined. Develop credibility, put the arguments in an effective order, supply evidence to support your arguments, and use techniques to motivate action

Assignment 6: Communicating Change
You are the head of the accounting department for a large company that hires student interns each summer. You have always requested two or three interns depending on the needs of your staff. In years past, the human resources (HR) department not only fulfilled your intern requests but was also able to send you students who were accounting majors. This year, however, HR announced that due to budget cuts, the internship pool would be reduced by half. You can request an intern–only one–but HR will assign interns only to selected departments, and HR cannot guarantee that your intern, if assigned, will actually be an accounting major. HR will determine the intern assignments based on justified requests from each department head. During a department meeting with your staff, you explain the situation and ask for their input. The group offers the following justification:

The accounting department employs 15 full-time staff members. Your department is one of the smallest in the company, yet is responsible for critical operational and budgetary functions upon which all other departments depend.
The company’s fiscal year ends June 30, which means significant work is required in the summer months to generate year-end reports in addition to regular accounting operations.
Coincidentally, two employees in the accounting department will be out on maternity leave, one during May and June, and the other during June and July. These absences will further limit the department’s ability to fulfill its end-of-year responsibilities.
INSTRUCTIONS

Write a message to the Director of HR, Mary Jenkins, requesting an intern (accounting major, if possible) for your department. Do not simply repeat the points just outlined. Develop credibility, put the arguments in an effective order, supply evidence to support your arguments, and use techniques to motivate action

The Most Beautiful Object in the Museum

Part A. The Most Beautiful Object in the Museum
 As you walk through the museum, you should seek the most beautiful object you
can find. When you have discovered it, stand or sit before it for at least two
minutes.
 Try not at first to look at the “title” or other information displayed with the
object. Use your insight and imagination to understand the art before you.
 Think about what thoughts and questions are going through your mind as you
look at the object.
 Take notes that express your feelings and thoughts plainly and simply.
 Make a 8 x 10 sketch of the object, including the important details. (Do not
worry about your artistic talent – I just want to see your impression of what you
saw.)
 This part of the paper should include:
 the name of the museum you visited.
 the title of the work you selected, its artist, and the country the artist is
from.
 a detailed description of the work and why you selected it.
 the feelings the work aroused in you.
 a list of the questions you thought about while watching it.
 your 8×10 sketch, including the important details.
Part B. The Most Interesting Non-European/Non-North American Work of Art
 Follow the directions for Part A. Make sure to list the country the artist is from.
Part C. The Most Disturbing Work of Art OR A Work of Art that You Disliked
 Follow the directions for Part A.
Part D. 2 Paragraphs about a Special Exhibition
 Please add a paragraph about a special exhibit at the museum. What was the title of
the exhibit? What was the purpose of the exhibit? Give a general description of the
artwork that is part of the exhibit.
 In your second paragraph, select an object you feel is the most significant of this
particular exhibit. Make sure to include the title of the piece, the artist, country of
origin, a description and sketch, and why you thought it was the most significant of
the exhibit.
Part E. What Would You Take Home
 If you could take one work home, from anything in the museum, what would you
select and why? Describe the work you have selected and draw an 8×10 sketch.
Part F: Follow These Procedures
 If you have trouble writing your paper, go to Questions You Should Think about
When Looking at Art.
 Your paper must be typed in a 10-12 point font, double-spaced with margins that are
no more than 1 inch.
 If you don’t have Microsoft Word, save your file as a .txt, .pdf, or .rtf file.
I cannot open .wps files. Title your document with one word. For example, I might
use sarah1.doc.
 Make sure to upload your paper to the dropbox and read your originality report. If
your paper is above 5% copied (excluding quotes) make the necessary changes
before re-submitting it into the dropbox. For more information on using turnitin
dropboxes inside of Blackboard and understanding originality reports, click here.
 Sketches should NOT be included when you upload your paper. They should be
scanned in and uploaded to the seperate Museum Sketch dropbox or they can be
faxed to the number in the syllabus. Make sure your professor’s name is on the cover
sheet. The sketches can also be snail mailed to the address in the syllabus
