Jack Ma’s Alibaba

In September 2014, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange became the biggest ever at $25 billion. Compare this to Facebook’s $16 billion IPO in 2012, Google’s $1.7 billion in 2004, and Amazon’s IPO of $54 million in 1997. Why all the excitement over this company? Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, Alibaba is an online wholesale trading platform that makes it easier, faster and cheaper for international buyers to find Chinese suppliers. Alibaba’s focus is on serving small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) or, in the words of Jack Ma, “shrimps” not “whales.”

As we discussed starting from the beginning of this course, the Internet is one of the biggest drivers of globalization, opening markets that were essentially closed or very difficult to find or reach. In this unit’s assignment, we will explore how online trading companies like Alibaba can help businesses engage in importing and exporting. Support your viewpoints by using the readings and resources provided in our online lecture, book, library and reputable sources found on the Internet. When ready, fully answer the following questions.

1. How does a platform like Alibaba make it easier, faster and cheaper for SMEs to engage in importing and exporting? Identify and explain at least three.

2. Imagine you are an international business manager seeking a new supplier. Identify a product you would like to import, then visit www.alibaba.com and locate a seller. Do the same with www.trade-india.com and www.europages.com. Which site did you find the easiest to use? Name three criteria you would use to help you decide between buying from a seller in China versus India or Europe?

3. A major barrier to international trade activities is the issue of trust. What can platforms like Alibaba and sellers on these exchanges do to raise trust with buyers? How can sellers be sure they are dealing with ethical buyers? Another way of asking this is, what can be done to reduce the risk of fraud for both buyers and sellers?

Annotated Bibliography for The Clockwork Orange

Research Paper Annotated Bibliography

First, be sure that you understand the following vocabulary:
1. Bibliography
2. Works Cited
3. In-text Citation
4. Full MLA citation
5. Annotated Bibliography

These words can be found in both your textbook (see the appendices which hold sample research papers and use this terminology) as well as in the HE book, and of course, in the dictionary. You must have more than just a working understanding of these words. You must know how they relate to each other.

For example: what is the relationship between the In-text citation and the Works Cited page? (hint: this reappears in the exam …) Generate your OWN full citation for your sources. Failure to do this will result in a zero for this assignment. For your annotated bibliography, you will write an evaluation of ten of the sources you collected.

This evaluation begins with the full citation and is followed by a paragraph in which you discuss the following elements:

1. Authenticity: a discussion of the author’s actual authority to speak as an expert on the subject at hand. Ask yourself: does this person have experience and/or education that qualifies him?

2. Accuracy: is the work biased? Remember, bias isn’t bad; in fact, it can be useful. The most important thing about bias is that you, as the researcher, must know that the bias exists. Bias is the omission of relevant points/evidence which support the opposite argument.

3. Organization: how is the work organized? Is it an essay in a journal? a chapter in a book? Is it a case study or an observation paper?4.
Publication date: when was it published? Is the information outdated? Is the information still relevant. For example, a work written about airport security pre-2001 is probably too dated for use because that industry has changed so very much in the last decade.

5. Content 1: This is a brief (2-3) sentence summary of what the source contains. What is the source about? Reading the work in full is not necessary — just a “flip-through” or “skim” of the work is usually sufficient to complete this portion of the assignment.

6. Content 2: This is a brief (2-3) sentence summary of how this source helps your paper. How will you use this source.

Each annotation must address all six of these elements in order to be complete. Typically, each annotation is about 125-150 words; much of this depends on how much discussion of each is required (for example, articles published in scholarly journals are peer reviewed prior to publication and are, therefore, authentic by publication; other sources that are not evaluated prior to publishing require extensive proof that the author has the street credentials necessary to be an “expert” on the issue). The first annotation you complete takes a while; the second is shorter; You will find that by the end of this exercise that you have learned a TON about your topic and that some of your sources were not as useful as you initially thought. Entries will appear with the full citation, followed by the annotation in paragraph form below the full citation for the work being annotated. The works must be in alphabetical order according to first element of the full citation. Each annotation must address all six of these elements in order to be complete. Intervention Plan Design assessment 3

Develop a 4–6 page holistic intervention plan design to improve the quality of outcomes for your target population and setting.

Your application of the PICOT approach to developing your problem statement and the research that you conducted and synthesized in your literature review are the foundation and framework that you will need to successfully build your intervention plan. This plan will lay out specific components of the intervention you are planning to address the need you have identified for the target population and setting. You will justify your approach to the intervention plan by integrating appropriate theoretical foundations. You will also analyze and address the needs of stakeholders, requirements of regulatory bodies, and ethical and legal considerations. It is important to have a sound intervention plan design in place before trying to work on the details of implementation and evaluation

Find out one major contribution Islam has made to modern western culture today, and discuss what you think of it in terms of its significance to modern life.

4. List five facts about the text of the Qu’ran itself.

5. Find a map of Mecca, and locate some of the mosques in it. Write a sentence or two of your impressions of the images or facts you see.

6. Check out three more sites about the Qu’ran or Islam. Which three did you visit? Which was the most helpful, and why?

7. Find out one major contribution Islam has made to modern western culture today, and discuss what you think of it in terms of its significance to modern life.

8. Compare three points of Islam and one other religion.

9. Find a picture of some of the Qu’ran’s text in Arabic, and describe what it looks like. (You can include the picture if it will copy & paste into the document. But be sure to cite its source!)

10. Explain, using two full paragraphs, what you feel is the most insightful idea Islam has for you personally, and why you feel that way. Give examples.

Evaluation Plan Design assessment 5

Develop a 4–6-page plan that will allow you to evaluate your intervention.

Note: Each assessment in this course builds on the work you completed in the previous assessment. Therefore, you must complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Once an intervention is planned and implemented it is important to evaluate the degree to which the outcomes of the project were achieved. By evaluating the desired outcomes of an intervention, it is possible to make more informed decisions about opportunities for continuous improvement. It is also possible to identify strategies and approaches that could be useful in improving one’s personal practice in other contexts or care areas

Heat Stress Exposure Limits

Heat Stress Exposure Limits
(worth 20% of the final mark)

Introduction to the assignment:
Heat stress is a real concern in many workplaces across the country and the world with workers dying from heat stress across the globe. And yet, despite this concern, little appears to be happening in the way of exposure limits in Canadian workplaces and internationally as well.
The purpose of this assignment is to look at heat stress from a:
 Provincial,
 Federal, and
 International perspective,
and determine what the maximum value is, and if there is none, what standard do they follow, such as ACGIH, ISO or SEI or some other internationally recognized standard.
The task:
Write a short research paper identifying what exposure limits or criteria each province uses and set up a table comparing each. If there are no direct limits identified, indicate what legislation may indirectly apply. By way of example for ergonomics, there is nothing in legislation under the OHSA in Ontario except the due diligence clause “taking all precautions reasonable for the protection of the worker.”
Do the same for the federal government in comparison with other global nations, what exposure criteria they use, how they come about setting upper limits if any and set the whole thing up in table format. You will need to identify their legislation that deals with heat exposure including the provinces.
You should then discuss the global issue, i.e. provincial versus federal versus international. Identify if anyone has got it right, the pros and cons, and potential challenges of setting heat exposure limits and offer recommendations.
You should also provide a conclusion for your report.
How to complete the task:
The CCOHS website should be very useful to you for this assignment for the provincial, and federal values.
For international values, use your preferred search engine and type in the name of the country and then the words “heat stress exposure limits” or other similar words and see what you come up with. If the country does not have a set temperature value, it should still tell you whether they follow ACGIH, ISO or possibly SEI or other body’s guidelines. If you are having trouble with international, remember there is the OSHA in the United States. Other countries to look at would be possibly New Zealand, and Australia.
You can also try this link: http://osha.europa.eu/en/topics/ds/oel/nomembers.stm to see what other countries have.

*On another note, if you copy or cut and paste any tables from websites, or copy phrases, you must indicate where they came from as per the instructions in the Bibliography.
Report format:
The value for this assignment will be 20 points which will represent a maximum of 20% of the total grade for the course.
The 20 points will be divided into:
1. 1 point for the Cover Page with title, author (you), date, intended recipient (me), etc. (in your case, also course title and course number).

2. 1 point for the Purpose of the Report which explains briefly in a paragraph or two why the report is being done.

3. 2 points for the Executive summary which is a Reader’s Digest version of the report, or a Cole’s notes version which summarizes the entire report in one to two paragraphs along with the major recommendations. It is not meant to be an introduction or a purpose for the report. It is often used for lengthy reports.

4. 1 point for the Table of Contents with pages numbered in the report.

5. 2 point for the Bibliography (title, author, publisher, edition, year of publication and city – if web site, name of the web site, the information that was accessed, the specific link in the web site and date accessed.

6. 4 points for the Provincial (all provinces) and National (federal jurisdiction) Perspective, comparing them and what they use. This can be in table format, similar to what CCOHS has.

7. 4 points for the International Perspective and comparing them and what they use. You should look at what at least 4 other countries are doing.

8. 4 points for the Discussion and Recommendations (why is there so little out there in terms of a set value; what do most regulatory bodies use; and what should employers adopt in the absence of regulatory values.

9. 1 point for the Conclusions.
The report should be typed, either 10 or 11 Arial or Calibri font. If you wish you can use Arial Narrow 9 or 10 point for your table, if you wish to put the information in table format. The report must be in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat.
Please make sure your name appears in the file name.
Once the report is ready you can upload it into the Assignment section in Blackboard.

In Edward Hirsch’s “How to Read a Poem,” the acts of reading and writing are considered dialogic (relating to or in the form of dialogue; conversation).

In Edward Hirsch’s “How to Read a Poem,” the acts of reading and writing are considered dialogic (relating to or in the form of dialogue; conversation).

As a reader, according to Hirsch, you enter into a conversation with a poem by coming to it with questions and understanding there isn’t necessarily one right answer.

For your first essay, then, you will demonstrate the “conversation” you have entered into with a poem. You may write about any one or two of the assigned poems from this unit:

“The Red Wheelbarrow,” Williams
“Diving Into the Wreck,” Rich
“Introduction to Poetry,” Collins
“This Is Just To Say,” Williams
“O Me! O Life!,” Whitman
“If You Are Over Staying Woke,” Parker
Excerpt from Citizen: An American Lyric: “You are in the dark, you are in the car…,” Rankine
“My California,” Herrick
“ode to coffee / oda al café,” Noel
If you’d like, you may build upon any of the discussion posts you have already submitted. Your posts can provide the foundation or a starting point for your essay. Your thesis will be a claim you want to make about the poem. You might, for example, want to discuss the speakers of one or two of the poems (see the poetry lexicon discussion post for an example of what this might look like).

Your essay should contain quoted lines from the poem you are writing about. You are also permitted to quote from any of the articles we’ve read to support your claims (in fact, I would highly recommend this; it’s not required, but it is encouraged. However, you must rely on the sources that have been provided to you; these include the assigned articles, as well as the sites you can access from the course homepage. You do not need to do your own research for this assignment. Use the sources that have been provided). Please review the powerpoint from Week 1 for how to quote poetry. Remember that quotations must be introduced; they cannot stand alone as complete sentences. For additional tips on quoting, see: Avoid Dropped Quotations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. For those of you with copies of They Say/ I Say, review “The Art of Quoting.”

You can bring any of the assigned texts into conversation with each other; don’t think that you can’t quote the Chiasson article if you’re writing about Parker, for example. You might find yourself wanting to comment on the potential “meme-ability” of Whitman’s poem, perhaps, and therefore it would be appropriate to quote from the Sussman article even though he is discussing Williams.
