In the current international economic environment, managers are frequently required to undertake project work in addition to their core responsibilities. Frequently these projects are focused upon investigating new opportunities or potential strategic changes in order to retain and extend competitive positions within a turbulent business environment.

This module aims to equip managers and aspiring managers with the necessary skills to undertake independent project work within a business environment. It will achieve this via asking participants to conduct an independent piece of research based upon an actual business case situation which may be industry or corporate focused. Specifically, participants are invited to pursue one of two possible approaches:

1. An inductive study whereby participants are required to carry out a research project within a particular corporate or industry setting and derive some general management principles or theories.
2. A deductive approach whereby participants are required to examine or test the validity of an existing management theory to a particular management context.

OVERALL AIM(S) FOR THE MODULE

• To facilitate the development of advanced level independent working and critical problem-solving skills in a largely unstructured framework. Participants will be asked to define both the business problem and select the most appropriate data sources. This will include development of an appreciation of the case study technique as a vehicle for understanding managerial problems and issues. In particular, participants should be able to comprehend the complimentary nature of various research approaches and methodologies and the value of triangulation in research design.

• To develop participant knowledge of and proficiency with, a range of management research methodologies including quantitative and qualitative interventions, including data gathering, synthesising, analysing and consultancy skills alongside capabilities in report writing. The module aims not just to develop an academic writing style but to also enable participants to cultivate a professional corporate style.

The word limit for this assignment is 15,000 words
Where the submission exceeds the stipulated word limit by more than 10%, the submission will only be marked up to and including the additional 10%. Part 1: Morphology
Problem 1: Identifying Morphemes (Language Files)
A list of English words is given below. For each of the words do the following:
(1) Divide the word into morphemes (a-h will contain at most 2 morphemes, i-k will
contain more),
(2) Decide, for each morpheme, whether it is free of bound
(3) If any affixes are involved, label them as prefixes or suffixes, and
(4) If there are any affixes involved, label them as inflectional or derivational.

Problem 2: Bontoc (Language Files)
Consider the following data from Bontoc, a Malayo-Polynesian language spoken in the Philippines.
These data show an example of derivational morphology in which an adjectival root is turned into a
verb. What type of affix is used to form the verb? Describe its placement in the word.
[fikas] ‘strong’ [fumikas] ‘he is becoming strong’
[kilad] ‘red’ [kumilad] ‘he is becoming red’
[bato] ‘stone’ [bumiato] ‘he is becoming stone’

Problem 3: Cran-Morphs
A “cran-morph” (named after the word “cranberry”) is a morpheme that has no meaning without
the addition of derivational affixes. Some English examples are given below:
a) cranberry
b) receive
c) submit
d) inept
e) cobweb
For each of the words above, give some reasons why we might want to consider the bolded portion
to be an independent morpheme even though it has no meaning of its own. The best way to do this
is by providing either (a) an example of another word that uses the bolded morpheme or (b)
another word that uses the other morphemes in the word as a derivational affix or independent
word.
For each word also try to answer what part of speech the meaningless portion would have if it
could be used as a free morpheme.
An example is given below:
Unkempt – The morpheme “un” is used in other words to create words like “un-lock” or
“un-rest” or “un-believable” thus we know that “un-” can attach to other morphemes to
form new words. Since we can separate out “un-” from this word, we can conclude that
kempt must be another morpheme. Since “un” typically does not alter the part of speech of
the word it attaches to, and since “unkempt” is an adjective we can guess that if “kempt”
could be used on its own it would probably also be an adjective.
Problem 4: Zulu Roots (Fromkin, Rodman, Hyams 2003)
Part 1: Plurals
Consider the following nouns in Zulu and proceed to look for the recurring forms. Note that the
ordering of morphemes is not identical across languages. Thus, what is a prefix in one language
may be a suffix or an infix in another:

Topic: In The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago repeatedly identifies the marlin as a “brother.” What is the significance of this identification of the marlin? How does it connect to the way in which Santiago’s and the marlin’s roles at some points seem to become blurred? Most importantly, how does it connect to the larger themes of the novel?

Additional Stipulations:
 Use the present tense when you are analyzing a literary text.
 Begin your essay with a title that clearly indicates the essay’s subject matter, including the title of the book you will be discussing (e.g. Wilderness and Hunting in Leopold’s Sand County Almanac).
 This essay, like any academic essay, should contain a strong one-sentence thesis statement at or very near the end of the opening paragraph. Each supporting paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that makes a claim about the text and then proceed to give evidence for that claim and to discuss that evidence.
 The thesis statement and topic sentences must make claims about the text (e.g. “In Leopold’s essay, the wilderness is a stage on which men use traditional skills to prove themselves,” NOT just “The wilderness is a stage on which men use traditional skills to prove themselves”).
 Your evidence should include a good balance of direct quotation from the text and paraphrase. Remember to integrate direct quotations in the way you were taught in class (and in MLA style) and to include a works cited list.

You can use both New York Times Debate authors, Ferdman’s interview with Rosenfeld, Carr, Gladwell, Beck, or any essays of your choice from a reliable source (if using an outside essay, I must approve it first). Do not use Koifman’s essay because, while he lists a lot of useful ideas, he does not support those ideas with evidence.

Make sure to do the following:

1) Analyze two authors who disagree about this topic. Use at least three quotations per author. You must lead-in, cite, explain, and interpret each quotation.
2) In your analysis, use the quotations to explain the “stakes” or “so what” for each author. How might their big picture worries contribute to their disagreement?
3) Show me how these authors disagree in intelligent ways. No matter your opinion, demonstrate how two intelligent people might respectfully and thoughtfully disagree. Consider not just how they disagree, but also the evidence they use to support their argument. How might two authors with different views each present evidence supporting their claim? What’s up with that?
4) Offer your own stance on this disagreement. Explain your position, support it with evidence, and respectfully address naysayers. Don’t just say “so and so is 100% correct.” The point of this essay is to engage with intelligent disagreement. No one is completely right or completely wrong! You don’t want to waffle, but you should take a stance that respectfully and thoughtfully adds something to this disagreement. For example, maybe you think schools or teachers should use trigger warnings, but in a slightly different way than the authors consider. Maybe you think that the stakes / big picture is incorrect and want to offer a different big picture.
