Signature Assignment: Environmental Scanning

Purpose of Assignment

A strategic management plan addresses four different management functions: environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and control. Weeks 3, 4 and 5 individual assignments (Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3) are integrated to generate a strategic management plan. The purpose of the Week 3 individual assignment is to evaluate the internal and external environments of a company selected by the student, to analyze the competitive advantage of the selected company, to evaluate a set of suitable strategies, and to examine appropriate metrics.

This assignment provides students an opportunity to research a selected company as if they were involved in a company’s actual strategic management planning process. It allows students to see which management planning process and management plan the selected company is currently using, allowing them to measure the effectiveness of current strategies.

A Strategic Management Plan addresses four different management functions: Environmental Scanning, Strategy Formulation, Strategy Implementation, Evaluation and Control.

Case Study Analysis

Please read the attached case: Chiquita and Department of Justice.
This assignment constitutes evidence of your understanding of the concepts presented in the readings. It requires an organized, concise, coherent, and argumentatively sound response to an assigned case study. Application of the concepts presented in the course is essential, most especially the Principled Ethical Reasoning Approach. Your analysis will be evaluated using the criteria mentioned in the Grading Rubric, specifically clarity, organization, use of course material, use of outside sources, and quality of analysis are the criteria used to evaluate student performance on this assignment. Use the APA Style Method when composing your paper.

Please answer the following questions in the essay (This is the principle ethical reading approach requested by instructor) :
1. Is this an ethical problem? Why or why not
2. What values and principles are IN CONFLICT in this analysis? Explain.
3. What is your decision? Would you have made the same choice as the business or a different choice?
4. What alternatives are available to the decision-makers in this case? Explain.
5. Who are the relevant stakeholders in this case? What are the harms and benefits that accrue to each stakeholder group?

Tips from Professor on What NOT to do:
Principles: does not identify underlying ethical dilemma (what values are in conflict)
Character: the paper never really discusses how the actions being proposed are related to their character/identity/mission. If a company declares itself to be X, then how consistent are its actions (and your proposal) to its declarations?
Consequences: They fail to account comprehensively for how their decision (and a key alternative) affects key stakeholders both beneficially and adversely.
DO NOT REPEAT CASE FACTS – I have read this case multiple times. Only cite those that will directly aid you in your argumentation (and even then do not do a data dump)

Discuss how “The Things They Carried” differs from a “traditional” story. Do these things help or hinder O’Brien’s work? You might consider the elements of plot, point of view, self-awareness (meta-fiction), character development, symbolism, or any other devices. Though the story reads more like a memoir, how is that we can still call it “fiction”? (Or, can we?)

1. Essay should be approximately 3-4 typed, double-spaced pages, approximately 850-1000 words. Follow MLA format.
2. Be sure to have a clear thesis at the end of the introduction. You will prove the thesis in the body of the essay.
3. Avoid using first person “I” and second person “you.”
4. Be sure to use brief, relevant quotes from the story you are discussing.
5. Secondary Sources. Steve Kaplan: “From the Undying Uncertainty of the narrator in Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried” p. 577-582

You should quote at least two times from the article(s) you select.
Do not use any other outside sources. (But, be aware, if you do use any other sources you MUST cite them properly within the text of your essay and include them on your Works Cited.)
6. Include a list of Works Cited. Your list should include both the story and the article(s) used.
7. The final essay will be turned in directly to Turnitin.com.
8. Be sure to see my grade pointers at the bottom of this page.
Topic Choices: Choose one numbered item. Each of these has a central issue or question that you should use as the focus of your essay. But, you do not necessarily need to respond to each and every question within a numbered item.

Essay 2 Topics:
1 Discuss how “The Things They Carried” differs from a “traditional” story. Do these things help or hinder O’Brien’s work? You might consider the elements of plot, point of view, self-awareness (meta-fiction), character development, symbolism, or any other devices. Though the story reads more like a memoir, how is that we can still call it “fiction”? (Or, can we?)

2 To some degree, each of the critics in this chapter comment on the idea that the stories in the novel The Things They Carried are metafictional—that is, they in various ways draw attention to the fact that they are stories and thus also become about stories, storytelling, and about the relationship between fiction and reality, stories and truth. The novel’s title story and opening chapter—“The Things They Carried”—is, however, the least metafictional story in the book. Analyze what, if anything, seems metafictional in and about the story and why and how exactly that might matter. Do the story’s metafictional aspects make it seem less or more “true” or emotionally engaging, and if so, in what ways?

3 Identify the central argument of one of the three articles in this chapter and write a response.Use the story itself—“The Things They Carried”—to extend, refute, or complicate (take in a different direction) one of these authors’ interpretations. You may include in your discussion comments on the way in which the author uses secondary sources.

4 Lt. Cross carries a pebble from Martha with him. Martha describes her reasoning for picking up the pebble, which she found along the beach where “things came together but also separated.” This seems to bring out a central theme of the story, this idea of “separate-but-together.” Discuss this theme as seen not only specifically with Jimmy and Martha, but in other aspects of the story. How does Lt. Cross feel about this concept? How does it work to describe the way the soldiers were in Vietnam? And, on the idea of fiction (or metafiction), can it be applied to the idea of storytelling-the teller and the audience?

5 Death is clearly a central theme of “The Things They Carried.” The soldiers in the story handle death differently throughout the text. Some carry ghosts, while others seem not to be impacted at all by the deaths of their fellow soldiers (or their enemy). Discuss how two or more of the characters deal with / are impacted by death. What does the manner in which O’Brien includes the story of Ted Lavender’s death-multiple times, repeating information, returning to it in odd places-say about death and this death in particular?

looking for:
• A strong, clear thesis. This thesis will be at the end of the introduction paragraph.
• Good, logical paragraphing. Each paragraph should be distinct. Each paragraph will have its own “issue” or topic that helps to support/prove the overall thesis of the essay.
• Plenty of specific quotes from and specific references to the story.
• The TWO required quotes from the secondary sources. These alone are worth 10 points of the overall essay grade.
• A clean, error-free Works Cited. (The Works Cited is also worth 10 points of the overall essay grade.)

Goal Seek and Social Media Analytics

ASGN:Goal Seek and Social Media Analytics
Scenario
Walt Disney Resorts & Parks (WDRP) has a new advertisement for broadcast TV and social media. As a new marketing intern at WDRP, it is your job to identify the most popular TV shows and social media sites on which to place the ad. Using the data on the “Prime Broadcast TV” and “Social Content Ratings” tabs of the provided data spreadsheet, answer the following questions:
Questions
Data Orientation
For the first two questions, use the “Prime Broadcast TV” tab of the spreadsheet
(1) For the weeks of 1/22, 1/29, and 7/30, what single TV show should WDRP have advertised on to reach the most viewers?
a. 1/22: <<Type your answer here>>
b. 1/29: <<Type your answer here>>
c. 7/30: <<Type your answer here>>
(2) WDRP may be able to negotiate a discount to advertise on ABC stations (which are also owned by Disney). Filter the Prime Broadcast TV list for just ABC shows (this should result in just 5 rows) and list the top-watched ABC shows.
a. <<Type your answers here>>
Goal Seek
(3) Prepare to run a goal seek by following these directions:
• Copy the 5 rows of ABC shows and paste them into the “Goal Seek” worksheet starting in cell B4.
• Use an appropriate function to calculate the “Total Cost to Advertise (no discount)” for all five shows in cell I10. (Hint: first calculate the “Cost to Advertise” for each show based on “Cost to advertise per Thousand Viewers”)
• Use an appropriate function to calculate the “Total Cost to Advertise (with discount)” in cell I12 (Hint: This should use the discount given in cell K7)
a. <<Insert a screenshot showing the results of you calculations here. This should include columns G, H, and I with rows 3 through 13. >>
(4) Given yearly advertising budget that averages $100,000 per week, use Goal Seek to calculate how big of a discount WDRP needs to ask for to afford to advertise on all 5 of their top 10 shows for these 3 weeks. Take a screenshot of the goal seek pop-up window after you’ve entered your inputs (but before running the goal seek), and paste it into part A. Then run the goal seek and write the result (the required discount) in part B.
a. <<Insert screenshot here>>
b. <<Type your percentage answer (to 2 decimal places) here>>
Social Media
For these next three questions, use the “Social Content Ratings” tab of the spreadsheet
Next, assume that advertisements are interacted with on social media at the same rate as the show on which they air. WDRP wants to get their ad trending on social media, and has data from Nielsen for the weeks of 1/29 and 9/10 (See “Social Content Ratings” tab of the spreadsheet).
(5) If WDRP wanted to only advertise on Disney-owned stations (ABC and the ESPNs), which non-sports-related show should WDRP advertise on to maximize their overall social media interaction? (Hint: Column D indicates which shows are Sports-related)
a. <<Type your answer here>>

(6) What does the answer to question number 5 (above) change to if WDRP wants to maximize their Twitter engagement by purchasing on a single non-sports-related show shown on a Disney-owned station?
a. <<Type your answer here>>

(7) Finally, if WDRP decided they want to maximize their Instagram engagement by purchasing across multiple shows, no matter who owns the network, would they do better by advertising on sports shows, or on non-sports shows? Create a chart or PivotChart showing how much of a difference exists between Instagram engagement on sports shows versus Instagram engagement on non-sports shows, for all networks.
a. <<Type your answer here>>
b. <<Insert your chart here>>

Suggestions:

It is recommended that you use your own place of work (if appropriate). Alternatively, you may choose another organisation as an example for this assignment.

Nonprofit Fundraising Case Study

The purpose of Case Study (Part Two) is to build upon the work you have done in Case Study (Part One). The organization that you selected as your preference in Part One will be the subject of Part Two. Develop a fund raising campaign for the organization utilizing one of the methods discussed in the course readings. The campaign is one project spelled out in detail, not a yearlong series of projects. Write up the proposed campaign, and find a nonprofit fund raising professional in a different organization than the one with which you are working to critique it, and to sign off on your proposal. Attach a letter signed from the person overseeing your work. The letter may be scanned or sent in email format. The assignment includes an interview with a manager in the organization to verify the feasibility of the project.

Be sure to provide the name of the organization, the mission statement, description of services, and annual budget, as you have done in Part 1. This material should be no more than one (1) page. Develop a slogan and strategy. Attach a sketch of your logo. The logo is to be an original creation and specific to the campaign. The logo is to be original art, and may be hand-drawn or computer generated. It should be scanned and included with your submission. We are not looking for professional artists, per se. But we are looking for original creativity. Include a specific description of your target audience (donors), and a rationale for focusing on this demographic. The project must include a social media component but may also incorporate other fund raising strategies appropriate to the target audience and the organization for whom the funds are being raised. The paper must include a budget that reflects both financial and human resources to carry out the campaign. Further, identify a revenue target, as well as what percentage that target represents of the organization’s total budget. Produce a time-line of activities leading up to the event and then for follow-up afterward. As always, the paper should reflect material from the text.

This second paper should also be 6-8 pages of text in length, not counting a title page, bibliography page slogan page, logo page, or sign-off messages from the outside party critiquing the plan and the inside party commenting on feasibility of the project. Use of bulleted lists is acceptable where appropriate.
