Think about each of the decisions they made in designing the study, and what they concluded from the results. Were these good design decisions? Were the conclusions reasonable? What are possible problems with the design, sampling, measurements, and so on? How likely are these problems? How would they impact on the results and conclusions?
(1) The Research Question.
How does the author justify the importance of this question to the scholarly community?
How does the author demonstrate that the question remains unanswered? What prior research on this question is mentioned and what is the author’s explanation of why answers provided by the prior research are inadequate or are addressing a gap in the literature?
(2) Literature Review
Has the author examined the relevant literature on the topic and persuasively explained why the research question posed has not yet been satisfactorily answered? An author does not need to include all literature, but should discuss what the field holds to be the most recent and salient investigations of the topic.
(3) Research Approach/Methods
How does the author explain and justify the contribution s/he will make with the research? What research approach /study design used – is it appropriate? Are any sampling issues involved / discussed? How was the sample selected and is it appropriate? What is the population about which generalizations are drawn and do the cases examined justify such a generalization?
(4) Operationalizing Variables
Has the author produced a novel conceptualization or operationalization that deserves applause, used some measures you think are doubtful, or just presented what they are going to do without any logical explanation of why?
How is each variable conceptualized and operationalized? Did the author develop the conceptual / operational definition herself, borrow it from a specific theory of prior research, or simply refer to it as a variable commonly used in the discipline? Is the operational definition/s valid?
Are the hypotheses clear? What is the author’s rationale for expecting the independent variables to be related to the dependent variable? Is this logic persuasive to you? Are the operationalizations of the variables consistent with this logic? For example, if the author talks about a college / non-college education association to cancer screenings, is the variable operationalized as this dichotomy or as a continuous variable reflecting years of education?
Is the direction of the relationship discussed and / or clear? Is it likely that relationship direction might flow in ways not discussed by the author, from the dependent variable to the independent variable or between independent variables?
Are any variables introduced primarily to control for their confounding effects? Which ones? What is the explanation given for why they might have a confounding effect? Are there other confounding variables you can think of that the author ignores? Alternatively, if the authors contend no controls are necessary is their reasoning persuasive to you?
(5) Analytic Approach
What statistical technique does the author use? Based on the questions being asked and the data available, is this an appropriate technique? Do the authors discuss the assumptions of the technique?
(6) Findings
What did the author find as the result of the research? Which findings were expected or unexpected? Are you persuaded that the inferences drawn from the research about the hypotheses are valid?
(7) Limitations
Are the limitations discussed thoroughly? What other limitations can you identify?
(8) Conclusions and Recommendations
What does the author suggest, if anything, as possibilities for future research? Is the author’s argument understandable? Are the arguments presented logically and coherently? Is the paper well organized so you can easily follow how the research was conducted and why?
Pick out a few MAIN POINTS OR CONCEPTS that you think are most important in reading this study critically. Examples of these sorts of concepts are: sample size, bias in measurement of outcome, loss to follow-up, unrepresentative subjects, etc
Determining Proper Job Classification
Assume you are an HR Consultant that has been hired to help Comfort Assisted Living with a recent grievance that was filed by one of its employees. You will not be working on the legal aspects of the case, but you will help the company determine if the employee’s job classification is correct. Comfort Assisted Living has an HR Department but would like to obtain an outside opinion.
The employee, Gregory Williams, is currently working as a Senior HR Specialist for Comfort Assisted Living. His current job duties are provided in the Supplemental Information document posted in our classroom.
Mr. Williams has been in the position for 5 years and had consistently received “outstanding” ratings on his performance evaluations until this year when he received a “meets expectations” rating. A month ago, he saw a job announcement that Comfort Assisted Living placed on Monster.com for a Deputy VP of HR. Mr. Williams was angered by the job announcement because he felt he was already performing the duties stated in the announcement. When he asked his supervisor about the job, he was told that the Deputy position was a new one that was being created and that he would have to apply for the job just like everyone else.
Mr. Williams disagreed and felt his current position should be reclassified to that of a Deputy VP of HR. He has filed a grievance with Comfort Assisted Living and you have been hired to determine if Mr. William’s current job is equivalent to the new Deputy position. You have been told upfront that it has been years since the company conducted a job analysis for its HR positions so you might have to begin there before making your determination. Also, you have heard from employees that work with Mr. Williams that he has been slacking on the job lately. According to them, he routinely comes in late, takes extra long lunches, and does not submit all of his work on time. At least one of his coworkers said Mr. Williams was having health issues and that he might have to undergo chemotherapy. Another coworker said the health issues weren’t with Mr. Williams, they were with his young daughter, who has a mysterious illness that doctors are having difficulty diagnosing. You’ve checked his leave records and nothing is on file regarding an FMLA request and there is no documentation regarding possible medical issues.
In completing this assignment, you will showcase that you can conduct a job analysis and use the results to develop a job description, which will help address organizational needs/concerns. You will also demonstrate that you have an understanding of the ethical issues involved with job analyses, job evaluation, and job design. Additionally, you will show that you understand the HR context and have mastery of the fundamental student competencies with communication and critical thinking.
Steps to Completion
1. Review the information in the Supplemental Information file and relevant course material regarding the nature of a job analysis and its relationship to job descriptions and job classifications.
2. Determine what additional information you will need in order to determine if Mr. Williams is justified in his claim.
3. Decide which of the four most commonly used methods of job analysis (observation, interviews, questionnaires, functional) you will use and be prepared to defend your choice.
4. Determine how you will overcome some of the most common problems in performing a job analysis. Our course material discusses several of them.
5. Review and understand the key ethical considerations when conducting a job analysis and designing a job description.
6. Conduct an internet search to find job typical job descriptions for Senior HR Specialists. Compare and contrast the components in those descriptions with the information given regarding Mr. Williams’s current job duties.

Deliverables
There are two (2) separate deliverables for this assignment.
1. Prepare a 6-7 page description of how you will conduct the job analysis and include a projected timeline for completion, including all of the interim steps. Assume this report will be given to the Legal Department of Comfort Assisted Living and will be a key piece of evidence if Mr. Williams’s grievance goes to court. With that in mind, your document must include sufficient support for your plan, and include a discussion of the ethical issues that might exist in this case and how you would overcome them. Your write-up must include appropriate references and citations. The final document must be formatted according to APA guidelines.
2. Given the information you have in the supplemental document and from the additional resources you found, develop a possible job description for Mr. Williams. You will have to make some assumptions regarding the nature of his work. That is fine, just be sure to highlight and explain where any major gaps exist.

RESEARCH PAPER: PART 1 – CASES SUMMARY INSTRUCTIONS
Since 1963, a series of United States Supreme Court case decisions have clarified that in criminal cases, prosecutors must disclose to the defense evidence favorable to the defendant. This includes information that may be used to impeach the credibility of government witnesses, including law enforcement officers. These decisions mean that police officers who have documented histories of lying in official matters are liabilities to their agencies, and these histories may render them unable to testify credibly.

Propose the topic and argument you want to explore for the research paper and also the paper you want to write. Your proposal must argue for the privilege of pursuing this topic. In other words, tell me why this topic is important enough to pursue and why it worth spending your resources (your time, energy, and effort, the librarian’s help, my comments and assistance, etc.).
Research Requirements: You may have to do research for this project.
• Other Requirements: Choosing a topic for your research paper.
• Questions: Come see me in my office, or ask in class.
Directions:
Propose the topic and argument you want to explore for the research paper and also the paper you want to write. Your proposal must argue for the privilege of pursuing this topic. In other words, tell me why this topic is important enough to pursue and why it worth spending your resources (your time, energy, and effort, the librarian’s help, my comments and assistance, etc.).
Tasks:
1. First, read the Research Paper assignment. There are limitatations about your topic, and also requirements for research. Whatever you propose must fit these limitations and requirements. If your proposal does not address these requirements, you will have to start over with a different topic.
2. Come up with a research question or a goal for the research. Do yourself a favor and pick something that interests you; you’ll be spending a great deal of time reading and writing about this issue. You don’t want to be bored or uninterested.
3. Do a little preliminary research on the topic. Is this issue really an issue? Is there research out there that can help you? You can also do a little research by talking to professors who teach the classes relevant to your profession (or the professionals in that profession), or, if you choose the student option, you can talk to professionals at the university who deal with the problem. (Hint: an interview can be used as a source for the research paper as well.)
4. You must have a thesis. This thesis must argue for your pursuit of this topic: “I will write my research paper on the inability of former students to buy houses after college in order to propose better management of financial aid loans.”
5. Draft the proposal. Your proposal must include:
a. Your topic. Be as specific as you can (not “financial aid” but “reductions in federal financial aid programs” or, even better, “the effects of reductions in federal financial aid programs on first-generation college students”). You should also describe the problem you want to research in some detail.
b. The importance of your topic. Argue for the priviledge of studying this topic. Why is it especially important and relevant? Why should you be allowed to use class resources (time, assignments) to work on this project? What are the benefits of studying this problem? Also, why is the topic important to your audience (your professor and fellow students)?
c. How you intend to approach the topic. How do you intend to approach and analyze this topic? For example, if you intend to write about the effects of financial aid reductions on first-generation students, do you intend to study it from an educational point of view (the effects on their studies), a social point of view (the effects on their present and future places in society), or an economic point of view (the effects on their finances, present and future)?
d. Your plan. Demonstrate that the proposal is feasible. Convince me that you can do this paper in the time allowed with the available resources.
Talk about your process. What is your working thesis? How, specifically, do you intend to research this paper? How do you plan to organize the information? How do you intend to support the thesis?
Show me that your plan will address the requirements and needs of the research paper assignment (and your own work).
Your plan can also include a work plan or time table: show me you’ve thought the process through and can do everything you need to.
e. Your needs. Not tools or time (all writing requires both), but what we can discuss on the discussion boards or what we can go over together to help you.
f. A Works Cited, if necessary. If you use research, you must cite it properly and include a Works Cited page. (If you include a proposed Works Cited, you’ll also get a head start on some upcoming assignments.) Use Chapters 11-13 (or Chapters 14-16 for APA) to help you; you can also post questions on the discussion boards about citing and creating a works cited page. You must present your sources in correct MLA or APA format not both.
6. You may divide the proposal into sections. Many proposals are presented that way. Use clear headings, and be consistent in how you use them. Chapter 21 can help you.
7. Revise the paper at least twice. It won’t come out right the first time. I guarantee it. And merely proofreading won’t make the sort of qualitative changes to organization, focus, wording, and style that your paper will need. Everyone’s paper needs this kind of work, mine included—you’re not alone.
8. At last, proofread.
Purpose: This assignment is designed to help you
• Begin your work on the research paper assignment. This is a first step in a series of assignments that lead up to the research paper.
• Narrow your topic and focus to something feasible and arguable.
• Focus your upcoming research.
• Practice making persuasive proposals. You will almost certainly need this skill on the job, even if you only make proposals orally (i.e., “We ought to rearrange the cubicles this way so we can all see out the window”).
• Practice good argumentation. Your research paper will also be an argument. So will every cover letter / job application you ever write.
• Work on paragraph focus, organization, and flow.
• Practice MLA citation format, both internally and on works cited pages.
Successful proprosals will
• Argue convincingly for a topic that fits the Research Paper assignment in an organized fashion.
• Maintain its focus on its argument.
• Support its ideas with logic, good argument, and evidence.
• Express ideas clearly and concisely.

Assessment 1 Instructions: Critical Thinking in Action
Write a 3-5 page academic paper in which you describe a business situation, apply a critical thinking framework to the situation, and recommend evidence-based solutions to the situation. Explain how the concepts of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) could affect both the situation and the solution.
Introduction
This portfolio work project will give you practice with academic writing expectations, while still being work-relevant. Many organizations have relationships with professional associations and contribute written articles regularly to newsletters and other publications. In addition, some organizations expect leaders to participate in conferences and seminars, where written work must be submitted using an academic style.
Scenario
From time to time, your organization submits papers to academic publications to help showcase the organization’s thought leadership. Your boss wants to be assured that you are comfortable researching and writing in a style that many academic publications use—in this case, APA style.
Your Role
Your boss has asked you to research and write about ways that businesses can apply critical thinking skills to complex issues that are also affected by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). To gain an understanding of how businesses apply critical thinking, you have decided to read an article about Panera Bread Co. and how they solved their mosh pit problem. Then, you will choose another company that you know has a problem you believe good critical thinking and understanding of VUCA can address, allowing you to flex some critical thinking muscles, similar to the leadership at Panera.
Requirements
Use the following as the basis for this assessment:
Jargon, J. (2017, June 2). How Panera solved its mosh pit problem. The Wall Street Journal.
George, B. (2017, February 17). VUCA 2.0: A strategy for steady leadership in an unsteady world. Forbes. Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/hbsworkingknowledge/2017/02/17/vuca-2-0-a-strategy-for-steady-leadership-in-an-unsteady-world/#5972d07613d8
Kallet, M. (2014). Think smarter: Critical thinking to improve problem-solving and decision-making skills. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley & Sons.
This e-book is an easy read on how to use critical thinking to problem solve. In particular, focus on section I, “Introduction and the Framework for Critical Thinking,” section V, “Decisions,” and the final section, “Critical Thinking: Summary and Suggestions.”
Think about how critical thinking and VUCA factored into Panera’s situation, using the Wall Street Journal article above. Then, think of a problem you have seen at a business you visited or read about in an article, and do any research you feel is necessary to thoroughly understand the problem this company has and to address this assessment.
• Write an APA-formatted paper that is well organized and covers the following:
• Write an introduction that tells the reader what to expect of this paper (1 paragraph).
• Provide an overview of the Panera bread situation, including brief mention of how critical thinking and VUCA factored into the resolution. Then, transition to a discussion of the problem you will be solving for another company, describing the situation (3–4 paragraphs).
• Apply the framework for critical thinking as outlined by Kallet to the problem you identified.
• Recommend at least one evidence-based solution to the situation.
• You must find one additional article to support your recommendation.
• Explain how VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) could affect both the situation and your recommendation (1–2 paragraphs).
• Write a conclusion that wraps up and summarizes your document (1 paragraph).
Deliverable Format
Write a 3–5 page academic paper following APA style and formatting. Refer to the writing resources in the MBA Program Resources in the left navigation menu in the courseroom.
