Paper #1
For your play paper, you will submit a typed, titled, page numbered, double-spaced essay answering a student created and answered hypothesis, with a demonstrable thesis, by the due date (see below). If you are having trouble with your topic, send me an email. Please include a works cited page including all sources, both primary and secondary, you cite from in MLA format. There is no need to include a cover page.
Your paper may only cover one (1) work of literature we have read for class. Significant points will be taken off for failing to follow this directive.
We have read so far include…
Death of a Salesman
Fences
A Doll’s House
The paper will have an introductory paragraph with a thesis, body of essay, and conclusion. This should be 1,000-1,250 words NOT including the works cited. Your paper will be written according to MLA 8 documentation. Please include your works cited page in the same document, partitioned from the conclusion of your paper with a page break.
For this paper, I am requiring at least two secondary sources. At least one of these sources need to be directly related to the works of literature you are close reading. All papers must have at least three quotes from the primary source and at least two from secondary sources. Your discussions of these quotes must exceed the quote in length.
Your secondary sources should come from the library databases. Useful ones for this course include…
Academic Search Premier
Artemis
Contemporary Authors
Google Books
Google Scholar
JSTOR
Literary Reference Center
Literature Resource Center
Please do not have more than one paragraph of summary. I have read these works too.

Thesis & Introduction
20 Points: The intro provides effective background and context for the argument. The paper contains a persuasive thesis including a clear claim, as well as a succinct account of the main reasons supporting the claim. Thesis effectively demonstrates strong critical thinking and reasoning and accurately forecasts the organization of the paper.
15 Points: The intro provides background info but needs a clearer, more specific context for the argument. The paper contains a thesis but either the or reasons supporting the claim are not clear and/or it does not accurately forecast the organization of the paper—Or —There is a clear thesis but it doesn’t answer the question accurately, although it does contain clear reasons supporting the claim.
9 Points: The paper contains a thesis, but no supporting reasons and/or the claim is vague or unclear. The intro does not provide a clear context or effective background information to set up the argument.
3 Points: The paper contains a thesis statement that does not answer the assigned question OR does not contain a thesis.
Evidence & Research
20 Points: All evidence is accurate, is incorporated into the text smoothly and coherently, and accurately relates to the specific points being developed. The writer provides a complete and detailed description of the subject matter. Evidence fulfills the ethical criteria outlined in class. Argument is clearly grounded in ethical researched support.
15 Points: Most evidence from the authors relates to the specific points being developed, is accurate and clearly incorporated into the text, although some parts are vague or used ineffectively. Most evidence meets expectations from the assignment sheet. Some research is ineffective.
9 Points: Some evidence from the authors does not relate to the specific point being developed. Some explanations are not significant or evidence is not clearly analyzed. The evidence does not fully meet expectations from the assignment sheet. Research is questionable.
3 Points: Most evidence from the authors is inaccurate, misunderstood, or used ineffectively. Little to no researched support.
Reasoning & Analysis
25 Points: The points the author uses to support the thesis statement clearly respond to and align with the thesis. The writer uses complex reasoning and raises interesting and debatable topics to engage the reader. Evidence is clearly explained in relation to the thesis and larger context of the argument. The writer effectively addresses opposing points and response.
18 Points: Many points the author uses to support the thesis statement clearly respond to and align with the topic and thesis. Many points demonstrate complex reasoning and raise interesting and debatable topics. The writer introduces opposing points, but perhaps needs a stronger response. Evidence isn’t always explained clearly in relation to the thesis.
9 Points: While the overall interpretation is sound, some specific sub-points are illogical, either because some evidence contradicts or is unrelated to the point it is designed to support, or points in one part of the argument undermine points made elsewhere.
3 Points: Both the overall argument and specific sub-points are poorly reasoned; and/or points in one part of the argument undermine points made elsewhere. Opposing points not addressed.
Organization
15 Points: Paper moves logically and strategically through its main points to achieve its purpose, following the forecast made in the thesis. Topic sentences clearly forecast body paragraphs and a variety of thoughtful transitions are used clearly showing how ideas are connected on a paper and paragraph level.
10 Points: Paper sometimes goes off course, but eventually comes back to the thesis that structures the argument, or some paragraphs need to be moved to better align with surrounding paragraphs. Smoother transitions between ideas are needed in some areas.
5 Points: Paper often goes off course. Topic sentences don’t clearly forecast body paragraphs. Ideas within paragraphs are not unified around one main reason from the thesis and ideas aren’t connected clearly.
2 Points: Paper organization does not match the presentation of concepts in the thesis, or is scattered and/or illogical.
Mechanics & Grammar
10 Points: Writing Is Almost Completely Free Of All Major Errors.
7.5 Points: There are one or two errors per page.
