Case Study
Claire is a previously healthy, unvaccinated 3 year old child who has been admitted to your nursing unit at the children’s hospital. Claire’s parents report that she had a cough and runny nose last week, and was taken to see the physician. Claire’s admitting diagnosis is seizures and further workup is to be done to determine the cause. Claire presented to the emergency department (ER) by ambulance after she started seizing in her home. Emergency Medical Services reported a 3 minute long tonic-clonic seizure and the emergency room nurse reports to you that another tonic-clonic seizure occurred that lasted 2 minutes in the ER. Post-ictal period lasted approximately 5-10 minutes both times and vital signs were within normal range in the ER. Claire is now on the unit, and vital signs are as follows: Temp- 38.7, Pulse- 134 BP- 88/62 Resp- 32/min and Sp02 90% on room air. On your initial assessment Claire is lying in the bed staring at her mother, she appears listless and does not fuss when you take her vital signs. Claire’s mother is frantic and reports that Claire vomited just prior to you entering the room.

1. Identify three communication techniques that could be utilized to build a therapeutic relationship with Claire and her mother. (3 marks)
2. Discuss three safety concerns related to Claire’s developmental age group and hospital admission. (3marks)
3. Describe what pieces of Claire’s assessment are of concern? (6 marks)
4. Using the data you’ve mentioned above, identify the most likely pathological process occurring with Claire. (2 marks)
5. Discuss four priority nursing actions you will perform while caring for Claire at this time. (4marks)
6. Identify what information from Claire’s health history that puts her at risk for developing a serious infection? (1 mark)
The physician requests that a second intravenous (IV)catheter be started on Clair to administer medications. When you enter Claire’s room later in the shift to start the IV, Claire starts to cry and kick and you are not able to even look for a vein as she will not keep still.
7. Discuss the legalities of restraining a 3 year old child to complete medically necessary treatment. (2marks)
8. Identify the type of restraint that would be most appropriate for Claire.(2 marks)
9. Identify what you would need prior to restraining Claire. (4 marks)
Four days later you return to your next shift and when entering the room Claire is sitting up in her cot and waving. She laughs when you approach, says hello, and shows you her stuffed elephant. When you are assessing her, you notice that she is favoring her left arm, which appears red and is warm to touch at the elbow.
10. Describe how you would perform a pain assessment on Claire, taking into account her age. (2 marks)
11. Identify three appropriate activities or toys for Claire given her suspected diagnoses above and her developmental age. (3 marks)

Justifying an Evaluation

Your second essay will be an evaluation, a type of essay that seeks to influence or change a reader’s opinion about a subject by analyzing it on established criteria and asserting an overall judgement. For example: A product review seeks to influence a consumer’s decision to purchase a product.

Your task:
1) Choose a subject for your evaluation. Here are some ideas that you may choose from: a local restaurant, a food truck, a bar or cocktail lounge, a public figure, a professional athlete, a community/state/national leader (not necessarily a politician), a film, a video, a painting, a photograph, an advertisement, a travel destination, a park, a university, a zoo, a vehicle, or an airline. You may choose to review The Laramie Project, a play running at Delgado’s Timothy K. Baker Theater Sept. 20 – Oct. 7. Ultimately, you are free to evaluate any subject, but every student must discuss his/her topic with me before writing. Keep in mind: your reader may be unfamiliar with your subject; they may already have an opinion on it; their opinion might vastly differ from yours. Consider these possibilities early on in the process.
2) Next, break down your subject into its most important criteria. For example: Criteria for evaluating a music video might include visuals, music, lyrics, choreography, special effects, editing, themes, or narrative.
3) Analyze the subject’s value in each criterion. Use examples to support your analysis. Sample scenario: I am evaluating a science fiction novel. I decide to evaluate the novel based on the criteria of language, character, plot, and genre. First, I assess the author’s use of language: the author’s description of the world is vivid but meandering. I then use two or three examples from the novel to support this statement. Next, I examine character: the novel’s heroine is complex and realistic, but her speech rings false. I proceed to support this estimation with more examples. Third, I appraise the plot: full of surprising twists and turns but disconnected at certain important junctures. Again, I use examples from the novel to back up my analysis. Finally, I consider the novel’s genre: Although it is marketed as hard science fiction, I identify several archetypal devices of the classic mystery novel to be skillfully integrated. At last, I support my final observation with more examples taken directly from the subject.
4) Synthesize your analysis into an overall judgment. You will assert this judgement (or main idea) in your thesis statement. Is your subject effective/ineffective? Successful/unsuccessful? Overrated/underrated? Worthwhile/not worthwhile? To continue my sample scenario from above: Adding up all my thoughts about the novel under various criteria, I assert that overall, the novel is deftly written with an artful hand, save for the few rookie mistakes of a young writer. Remember your audience; your judgement may depend on what your reader values most. If your audience most likely agrees with your judgment already, then you should choose a different topic.
5) Step into your readers’ shoes and respond to some objections they may raise about your judgement or analysis. For example: Another reader of this novel might find its cyborg crimelord antagonist to be flat or one-dimensional. I acknowledge this objection and counterargue that the author intended this effect for the antagonist in order to contrast the protagonist’s complexity, thematically reflecting that she is the only organic being in a society of machines.
6) You must organize your evaluation into a clear, logical structure with smooth transitions and a progressive arrangement of ideas.

Literature Review in Education Technology

I would like a 10 page literature review (introduction) about Using the muddiest point technique in Science classes. Attached are a list of the articles that I want you to read and write from. Do not copy anything in there, I want everything original and written from scratch. Only information from those articles**** The literature review will be divided in parts.

Part 1: the difference between active learning and lecture
Part 2: Metacognition and learning
Part 3: Using clicker in classroom
Part 4: Different forms of the muddiest points from the literature review

I only want these FOUR parts to be written about. No conclusion or anything. Plagiarism Free and only those articles in the attachment. I put the list of references in the attachment.

You can use the list of references attached to write about the topics. I’ll attach two examples of how I want this literature review to look like. Example 1 is very accurate, but please I don’t want quotations in the literature review. I want everything well explained. If you write about any study, the type of study must be mentioned ‘quantitative or quantitative’? where it was conducted? in what classes it was conducted in? I provided examples of the literature reviews of how I want it look like. From the references I sent earlier, I want it like this. I want an experienced writer in the field of education technology are that knows how to write please. I want the writer to be from the United States. (THE SUBJECT ARE IS EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY) there was no choice

in this assignment you need to create a playlist to promote your own personal health – either physical or mental health.

To do this, you will carefully choose music that suits the purpose of the playlist and draw on concepts and theory covered in lectures to strategically organize the order of songs. Actively listen to the music you choose for your playlist to test that it meets your intended purpose. Although you should choose either physical or mental health, you are welcome to draw on any literature from the different weeks of the semester that is relevant to explain the health benefits for you.

Introduction (approx. 500 words):

In the introduction, describe your selected purpose for the playlist and summarise key theories about how music could be used to promote the desired outcome. Clearly describe the process you used to create the playlist, stating how you went about selecting the songs and the order.

Assignment body (approx. 1200 words): In the body of the assignment, list the order of the 10 pieces of music included in the playlist. Discuss your experience of each track and use the literature to explain how it either contributed to your identified health purpose, or how and why it was unsuccessful. Include descriptions of the musical aspects (the beat, harmonies etc) and non-musical aspects (associations etc) of the track, depending on which was more relevant for each particular one. You must use the literature throughout the assignment to justify your claims about the benefits of music for this purpose. Dedicate approximately 120 words per song and include the song title and reference details as the subheading for each song (these titles are not included in the word count).

Conclusion (approx. 300 words): In the conclusion, reflect on any potential mental or physical health benefits that may result for others through the construction of a playlist similar to yours, including any ideas you have about the use of music to promote health in the community.

Headings:

Use the songs as Headings for the body of the assignment. Please include reference to each song as the subheadings including Track Title, Performing Artist and year of publication, with information about the Composer and Record Company if information is relevant.

Notes:

We recommend APA6 referencing style, however, your references can be in any style as long as they are consistent.
All citations included in the body of the assignment must appear in the reference list according to your chosen referencing style.
Include a minimum of 6 academic pieces of literature, integrated into the body of the assignment.
You may choose to write the assignment in first or third person.
The reference list and subheadings are not included in the word limit. In-text citations are included in the word limit.
You may choose songs from any genre/style/culture.
We allow 10% either side of the word limit for essays. Include the final word count on the front page of your essay.
Assessment criteria:

Integration of the literature into the explanations about the choice of each song.
Capacity to critically reflect upon the potential use and challenges associated with songs and playlists. Why was it successful or not successful, and how does that confirm or contrast the literature?
Clarity of writing and presentation.
Successful and clear reporting of all tracks and citations in the text, and correct referencing of tracks and literature references according to APA 6 or other chosen style.

Literature Review Paper

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to select a topic in the particular area in which you have an occupational or research interest, and to complete a literature review of the topic, using a minimum of ten scholarly references. This will allow you to demonstrate mastery of the program outcomes for the B.S. criminal justice program at Argosy University.

You may want to review the following documents:
•A sample literature review
•A document illustrating how to set up your word processor for APA style
•A “Guide for Writing a Literature Review”
•A PowerPoint tips document

For additional resources, conduct an Internet search using these keywords: writing a literature review.

Based on your review of the most recent, relevant research findings on your chosen topic, submit a final version of your literature review paper, integrating feedback received from your instructor. Be sure to include a research/focal question, synthesis of the literature you reviewed, well-established conclusions, and points of discussion and/or future research.
•Begin the review by defining the objective of the paper. Introduce the reader to your focal question. What is this question intended to address? You may state your “question” in the form of a problem if you like. Describe the topic for your literature review and why you chose this topic. Explain why you think it is important. It is also useful to tell the reader how the review is organized in your introduction section, before you transition into the body of the review.
•Organize your literature review paper by themes/theories/concepts, rather than article by article. If there is one major theme you want to highlight, state the theme. If there are three major themes or streams of thought on the topic, briefly name them—and then organize the balance of your literature review around those three streams. Think of themes, theories, concepts, lines of thought, and ideas as organizing strategies for your literature review. Your creativity in this assignment is not the content or findings but the clarity with which you organize the review and create a context for understanding the focal question.
•Evaluate subject matter and ethically apply laws, rules, regulations, policies or procedures to the various operations of law enforcement, judicial or correctional systems.
•When you are done introducing the first line of thought, create a new paragraph to discuss studies which present another line of thought or opposing view.
•Your literature review should hit the high points of each article. You should not discuss a single article, one by one, like a grocery list. Zero in on the main theme or finding and then move on to the next theme. Remember, this is a synthesis, an integration of all the things you have learned. You are creating a discussion on paper, which in turn gives the reader a context for understanding where the scholarship has been, where it is currently, and where it likely will be heading next. Provide enough details to help the reader understand the significance of the studies you cite without “rebuilding Rome.” Be sure to evaluate the studies and offer critical comments on any shortcomings you’ve observed or that have been reported by the authors.
•Discuss the main findings and their implications. Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study and contribute to the existing body of knowledge? Complete your review by drawing conclusions about your body of research and identifying gaps in the research which still remain to be explored, maybe even by you! Make an argument as to why your research question is important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic.

Requirements

Apply current APA standards for editorial style, expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations, and references. Remember to use your own words to describe and evaluate the articles. Avoid quoting the material and also cite works when you are discussing someone else’s ideas. Be sure to integrate any and all feedback received from your instructor. Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be no less than 5–6 pages in length.

Was the goal to “establish justice” expanding or shrinking between the 1890s and 1920s?

This prompt is about justice, equality, and the experience of women, ethnic minorities, immigrants, and protesters/demonstrators:
To “establish justice” is one of the primary goals of the Constitution according to the preamble. In brief, to “establish justice” means to be concerned with fairness, safety, and equality for all under the law (you may find more expansive definitions elsewhere). The preamble’s mention of “justice” is connected to the “self-evident” truth in the Declaration of Independence that “all men [nowadays, we mean all people] are created equal … endowed … with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Let’s consider what evidence we see on the theme of “justice” in American life during the period from the 1890s through the 1920s. Was the goal to “establish justice” expanding or shrinking between the 1890s and 1920s? Consider specifically how “justice” affected women, ethnic minorities, immigrants, and protesters/demonstrators.

Essay Expectations:

Expectations for each essay are as follows:
• Respond to the question asked with an argumentative essay.
• Use evidence that demonstrates knowledge of our assigned course material.
• Write clearly and cohesively.
• Use citations appropriately.
• Minimum of 750 words.
• Danger-Warning-Beware:
o Late essays lose 1 point per day.
o Evidence of plagiarism and/or collaboration = zero points.
Let’s break down these basic expectations more specifically below.

Respond to the question asked with an argumentative essay.
An argumentative essay is a persuasive essay based on evidence. The essay prompts will ask you to take a position on an issue. Your response should state a claim and reason in the first paragraph and then use the remaining paragraphs of the essay to explain evidence that supports your claim. More effective essays will also acknowledge the evidence that does not support your claim. In short, your essay should explain your position; it should not simply describe the topic.

Use evidence that demonstrates knowledge our our assigned course material.
We will rely on Roark’s Understanding the American Promise for finding reliable evidence to use in the essays. Where should you look? The terms at the end of each chapter (i.e. the Flashcards in LaunchPad) provide useful concepts, events, people, etc. that you can use for evidence. Also, the “Analyzing Historical Evidence” section of each chapter provides excellent primary source material that you can integrate into your essays. For each essay, you should plan on using a minimum of five pieces of evidence drawn from at least two different chapters.
Can you use other sources? Yes, of course, but they are not required. You can integrate other sources into your essay to complement (but not replace) material from our text. Other sources will make your paper longer, but that’s fine. Make sure they are reliable and relevant and cite them appropriately in your essay.

Use citations appropriately.
The more you use your own words and ideas the more effective your paper will be. Do not rely on numerous quotations or block quotations to bulk up your paper.
That said, all work in history builds on primary sources that already exist and conversations (secondary sources) that are already underway. Consequently, we need to use citations to point out when we are borrowing from those sources and conversations.
There are primarily three situations when you need to use a citation: 1) when you summarize or paraphrase a source; 2) when you quote a source verbatim; and 3) when you borrow an idea from a source.
Why do you use citations? 1) to give credit where credit is due (and avoid charges of plagiarism); 2) to show that you are using reliable and relevant sources; 3) to allow your readers to find the sources and read them.
Since you’re only required to use one source (our text), citations should be quite straightforward. We will use the Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date system for citations in this class. This means having a “References” section (like a bibliography) at the end of the paper and parenthetical, in-text citations (instead of footnotes).

Reference-style citation of our text (use this at the end of your essay):
Roark, James L., Michael P. Johnson, Patricia Cline Cohen, Sarah Stage, and Susan M. Hartman. 2017. Understanding the American promise: A history. 3rd ed. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin’s.

Parenthetical citation of our text (use this in the body of your essay):
(Roark, et al., 2017, page number)
If you use additional sources in your paper, use the examples above and resources below to format the citations correctly.

How to Cite:
“Author-Date System,” Chicago Manual of Style. Here you’ll find examples and explanations of converting sources to the correct citation format.

Write clearly and cohesively.
You are expected to write clearly and cohesively. Your essays will be evaluated for clarity (i.e. lack of errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, and word choice) and for cohesion (i.e. the logical flow of the paragraph from sentence to sentence and of the essay from paragraph to paragraph). Clear written communication is a core goal of this class, so you are expected to improve your writing based on feedback as the session progresses. In other words, each essay is graded with a higher expectation than the one before it.

Minimum of 750 words (and other other formatting expectations).
• We mean 750 words of your writing. This doesn’t include citations, reference list, titles, extended quotations, etc.
• Title pages are unnecessary; but, include your name and a title for your paper at the top of the first page of your paper.
• Use page numbers.
• Use 1-inch margins.
• Write your paper in a word processing program acceptable to Blackboard (e.g. MS Word); don’t submit PDFs.
• Include a claim (thesis) and supporting reason(s) that directly address the prompt in the first paragraph of your essay.

On avoiding plagiarism, see “use citations appropriately” above!!!!!!!

Case Study – The Zara Family

Case Study – The Zara Family
George Zara (aged 65) is married to Tina (aged 62). They are living in a lovely beach
side suburb North of Sydney, they have two children, Lisa (32) and David (28).
Lisa is married to John, they have 2 children, Alexander age 6 and Sophia age 2. John
works full time and Lisa is currently working part time.
David has recently become engaged to Emma and they are planning to get married in
February next year. George and Tina are very excited about this and they are looking
forward to the big day. They would like to assist David financially with the wedding.
They are also thinking to assist David and Emma buy their own house as they are
concerned the property prices in Sydney are becoming less affordable.
George is a partner in an accounting firm specialising in information technology (IT).
George works very long hours and travels frequently. He can’t wait for the opportunity
to slow down so he can have more time to see his wife and spend time with his grand
children.
George is considering to possibly stay involved in retirement by potentially taking on a
company board position considering his extensive experience and possibly
independently undertaking consultation projects in areas he feels passionate about
such as Artificial Intelligence.
Tina works as a teacher. She is currently working part time after she reduced her
working hours 3 years ago. She has commenced a Transition To Retirement pension
(TTRP) in a form of an Account Based Pension (ABP) to supplement her income. She
is currently drawing the maximum allowable annual pension payment from the TTRP.
Tina looks after Lisa’s children for the 2 days she stays at home.
George and Tina have been discussing for a while the need for them to see a financial
adviser to help them put in place a plan for retirement in light of the latest
superannuation changes impacting them and their retirement plan. They would also like
a plan to manage some upcoming expenses including their son David’s wedding, their
planned holiday, buying a new car and house renovations.
George and Tina have a very strong desire to remain close to their children and grand
children and assist them in every way possible. They are also realistic with regards to
the fact they need to look after themselves and recognise the fact they need to be able
to meet their expenses in retirement.
Both George and Tina have reasonable experience when it comes to investment and
management of their financial affairs. Although in recent times George and Tina have
been too busy to pay attention to their financial affairs, they feel this will be different in
retirement where he would have ample time to manage their financial affairs and take
control of their finances and investments as they both feel this is important for them.

George and Tina have decided to come and see you. Tina made an appointment for
both George and herself for an initial consultation with you.
George and Tina have left you with the information below after the first interview.

You need to clearly address the following issues:
 Their goals, objectives, needs, and concerns and whether they can achieve their
objectives including their retirement objectives and how (attempt to present
them with more than one option where applicable).
 They also ask you to address and take into account the following specific
issues:
o George and Tina would like to retire once George reaches age 67. However,
they are happy to postpone retirement for a few more years if this would
help them achieve a more comfortable retirement as George is happy to
scale down his workload and stay working on a consultancy basis for a few
more years. They think that they need an after tax income of $80,000 in
today’s dollars during their retirement as by then the mortgages will be paid
out (assume that this income can be produced tax free at retirement).
o George and Tina would like to pay off their debt as soon as possible.
o They would like to save and invest.
o They are happy to consider the concept of borrowing to invest if they feel it
can help them achieve their retirement objectives.
o George and Tina would also like to assist their daughter Lisa in providing for
their grandchildren’s high school education. They would like to provide
$20,000 pa per child for the 6 high school years.
o George and Tina would like to help David with her wedding. They would like
to put aside $30,000 in today’s dollars and be made available to David. They
would also like to do what they can to help their son David save to buy a
home with his future wife Emma.
o Tina would like to do some renovations on the house after they have both
retired. The expected cost is approximately $300,000 in today’s dollars.
o George and Tina would also like to go on a trip around Europe for which the
expected cost is approximately $45,000 in today’s dollars.
o They would also like to replace their car for which the expected cost is
approximately $130,000 in today’s dollars.
o George and Tina have been considering to establish an SMSF as they are
getting close to start their life in retirement. They wanted to know the key
relevant issues they need to be aware of including their roles and
responsibilities as trustees as well as the key risks and benefits related to
their specific circumstances. At present George and Tina’s superannuation
contribution goes to an employer nominated retail fund.
o George and Tina wanted to also explore the concept of borrowing to
purchase a property by using a Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement.
George and Tina would like to know more about that and the possibility to
use such a facility through a SMSF to buy an apartment in the city for their
son David and his future wife Emma to live in after they get married at a
subsidised rent to help them save to buy a house.
6 of 10
o George and Tina would also like to explore (once they set up their SMSF)
the ability of transferring their residential rental property they currently own
into their SMSF as they have been told by at a family BBQ that this could
beneficial be for tax purposes. They would like to confirm this with you.
o George and Tina have also heard from one of their friends about a strategy
that was referred to as “using salary sacrifice to superannuation to maximise
retirement income”. They are questioning whether such a strategy would be
suitable to either and/or both of them (provide the relevant calculation/s with
your explanation).
o George and Tina would like to know more about utilising their
superannuation savings to commence a pension or an income stream to
help them maintain their life in retirement. They also would like to know if the
latest superannuation changes impact their retirement plan.
o George would like to get some advice on the share portfolio invested
through the family trust. Advise George if his share portfolio is well
diversified and explain why or why not. Also elaborate on what can be done
to make the share portfolio more diversified. Be specific. Provide George
with a clear illustration/ justification. As part of your justification, comment on
whether the Family Trust is the most appropriate structure for this
investment.
o George and Tina would like to get some advice on their possible eligibility to
obtain the age pension once they are retired. Provide them with a clear
explanation of the reason why or why not. Explain any other social security
issues, if any.
o George and Tina would like to get some advice on the different types of
pensions they can start with their superannuation savings.
o George and Tina would like to ensure they have adequate general and
personal insurance. Be specific in your advice and perform an appropriate
needs analysis as part of your justification
o George and Tina would like you to consider their overall estate planning
needs. Be specific in your advice.
o The term deposit is maturing soon and they would like some advice on what
they should be doing and possible options available for them.
o Projections should be made up to George and Tina’s life expectancy + 8
years.
o Cash flow and asset projections (include projections of cash flows for
George and Tina, presenting both pre-tax and post-tax results).
o Cash flow and net worth tables.
o Provide assumptions used and justifications (cost, risk, suitability, etc.) when
required.
o Use diagrams and charts to assist with your illustrations.

Investment Advice
o Risk Profiling – George and Tina’s attitude to risk:
o George likes owning shares as from his financial background, he
understands that Australian shares and shares in general may have
higher volatility than some other asset classes, however, they tend to
perform well over the long term. George is comfortable with taking risk if
he can understand it and see that there are possible rewards.
o Tina on the other hand was brought up in a very conservative family
where her family had most of their money invested either in government
bonds or term deposits with one of the major banks. Tina’s family have
always talked in front of her that they dislike share investments as they
feel they can’t sleep for worry about market events. However, they have
also said to Tina several times that she could never go wrong with
property investment and have always encouraged her and George to
buy a house when they first got married. Tina therefore is more
conservative than George when it comes to risky investments; however,
as a result of studying finance subjects at university she can see that
sometimes there could be some merit in taking calculated risks to
achieve better returns.
o George and Tina have both indicated they wouldn’t mind taking some
calculated risks to help them achieve their objectives.
You are required to assist George and Tina in identifying their appropriate investment
risk profile based on George and Tina’s attitude to risk, goals, objectives, risk concerns,
time horizon and liquidity needs, etc. You also need to address the following:
 Provide specific asset allocations and how you will address investment
diversification.
 Address the issues for goals based risk profiling (i.e how investments may differ
to meet specific goals with a specific or shorter time horizon). Be specific with
your recommended solutions.
 Specific investment portfolio recommendations providing reasoning and
justifications. In this section, you need to provide your strategic asset allocation
advice followed by specific product investment advice.
Your task now is to prepare a complete Statement of Advice (SOA) for George and
Tina. The information provided in the client scenario is to be used in preparing your
calculations and advice. As the assignment is to be a SOA for clients, it should be in a
suitable format and use appropriate language. Clarity and conciseness are important
but full explanations are required.
As part of your advice to the clients you need to address the following:
 Asset allocations and diversification.
 Investment portfolio recommendations, providing reasoning and justifications.
8 of 10
 Cash flow and asset projections (include projections of cash flows for George
and Tina, presenting both pre-tax and post-tax results).
 Cash flow and net worth tables.

Thoughtfully reflect on the issues discussed in the video(s) you viewed and post a discussion response addressing the following points:

  • What is the speaker’s point of view about the topic? Is the speaker biased?
  • What ethical issues and ethical reasoning are argued?
  • Do you think that world poverty issues have moral and ethical implications? Why or why not?
  • Do you agree with the speaker’s point of view? Be specific and thorough. Express how and why you agree or disagree and discuss how ethics and values contribute to your opinion. Consider the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Do not just state your viewpoint, rather provide relevant details to support your findings and/or position.

Piaget and Vygotsky game design

Both Piaget and Vygotsky believed that play gives children valuable practice in adult-like behaviors. Furthermore, Vygotsky argued that various forms of play (especially pretend play) enables children to develop increasingly sophisticated ways of thinking about relationships between objects and their meanings. You might want to discuss young children’s play characteristics and behaviors, and elaborate on it to discuss older children’s play.

Neysmith-Roy (1994) designed the Make-a-Toy project to enable students to develop a higher level of understanding of children’s psychological and physical needs. She explains that this activity is a good alternative to experience-based activities in case students don’t have opportunities to interact directly with children.

In this activity you are to either plan or actually create a toy or game together in a group incorporating what you know about these theories of development. You will bring in your plan or the actual toy or game in the next class so that we can see it.

Instructions:

Construct an age-appropriate toy or game for children or adolescents.(Some supplies will be provided in class the previous week). Pick a close age range (ex. 2yo-6yo)

Consider youngsters’ developmental abilities (e.g., physical, cognitive, social, linguistic) for the age they are targeting. Design a game or toy (e.g., card game, board game, physical activity game) that is age-appropriate and takes into account the children’s developmental abilities.

Another variation is to have students actually teach a child a new game using Vygotsky’s ideas related to scaffolding and zone of proximal development.

Be prepared to justify:
The targeted age group
The toy’s positive and negative characteristics (including safety issues)
Describe how the toy contributes to children’s psychological and physical development
Convince the reader that Vygotsky would agree that your particular toy would contribute to children’s ability to master increasingly complex cognitive processing skills necessary for understanding cause-effect relationships, taking others’ perspectives (e.g., hypothesizing about what the opponent’s next move will be), practicing skills needed in later life, refining cooperation and conflict-resolution skills

The game itself does not have to be made, only come up with written up plan for one.

An example of similar games is included (Educational _games.pdf) as are the pages from the textbook which deal with the two educational theories involved.

Ethical Theories to Apply: Golden Rule and Virtue Ethics
1. Task
You work in the Ethics Department for ABC Company (ABC). Your department is dedicated
to advising its employees about their ethical obligations in the corporate setting. You are an
internal consultant who provides advice and most importantly, recommendations for action to
employees of the firm. All communications you receive in this capacity are confidential.
Luke, an employee of ABC, comes to you with the following scenario and asks for your advice.
He wants to fully consider the situation. Your task is to advise and recommend a course of
action based on the specified ethical lenses and facts as given. Below are the facts that
Luke provides to you.
*****
Luke has been asked to work on a project that involves developing land recently purchased by
ABC to build an adult entertainment retail store. According to the plan, the land is located on
the corner of the neighborhood where Owen, Luke’s brother, lives.
Luke knows that as soon as the plans for the store are made public, property values for the
surrounding neighborhood will decrease significantly. ABC plans to publicly announce the
project one month from today.
Luke is concerned about his obligations of confidentiality to his company. However, Luke is
also very close to Owen, who recently told Luke that he received an offer to sell his house at an
“okay” price given the current real estate market. Owen is considering selling but hasn’t made
any final decision yet. He wonders if he might get a better offer a few years from now when
the real estate market improves.
What is the ethical issue, why is this an issue, and what should Luke do about it?
