Answer the following Show That You Know questions for this unit:
What is the relationship between the predicted outcome and the hypothesis being tested in an experiment? An experimental outcome can be compromised in two ways. What are they and how do they differ?
What is the difference between an experimental group and a control group? Discuss in detail how each of them are used.
What problems do conceptually vague claims and vague predictions pose when we are designing experiments? Explain in detail.
What are single- and double-blind experiments and how do they address the problems posed by experimenter bias and experimental subject bias?
Answer all four questions on the same MS Word document (.docx or .doc). Do not use PDF or any other format.
Label each question. You may do so by repeating the question and following it with your response. The words of the question do not count toward the required 250.
You are required to use and cite at least two sources in every answer. The course textbook is primary and is required for every question, but you must use internet research as well. In addition to the textbook, for each question response you are required to use at least one credible reference source found on the internet. These sources must be properly cited where used and be properly listed at the end of the paper. You normally will have at least 5 sources on your reference list.

Critical Decision Making
In a 750-1,200 word paper, describe the scenario involving Mike, the lab technician, and answer the following questions:
What were the consequences of a failure to report?
What impact did his decision have on patient safety, on the risk for litigation, on the organization’s quality metrics, and on the workload of other hospital departments?
As Mike’s manager, what will you do to address the issue with him and ensure other staff members do not repeat the same mistakes?
A minimum of three academic references from credible sources are required for this assignment.
USE THIS iNFORMATION
1. Mike is running late again. The last time he spoke with his supervisor, he promised he would be on time. Mike even left his home 20 minutes earlier than usual, but there was an accident on his commute. The job is very important to Mike. He is the sole provider for his wife and newborn baby, but his supervisor told him that if he continued to be late he might face termination. Upon arriving, Mike observes a spill on the floor. He must make a decision: stop and make sure the spill is cleaned up or ignore it all together. If he safeguards the spill, surely he will be late clocking in and could face losing his job. Anyway, the spill is in another work area, and perhaps it will be cleaned up while he is clocking in. What decision should he make?
2. Report the Spill:
Mike stops in at the front desk to have housekeeping paged. Housekeeping routinely takes 3-5 minutes to arrive on site, but he does not have the time to simply wait. Using the telephone at the front desk, he calls to notify his supervisor that he is in the building, but needed to stop to assist with a spill in the main lobby. His supervisor thanked him for calling and asked Mike if the time could be made up at the end of his shift. Appreciatively, Mike agreed.
3. Dont report Spill:
Mike decides to clock in so he does not face losing his job. He is making every effort to keep his job and cannot afford to be terminated. Besides, he has a list of things he needs to accomplish from yesterday in addition to his assignment for the day. Certainly someone else who is responsible for the area will take care of the spill soon.
Later, Mike is asked to go to a patient’s room to gather some patient information. He learns the patient was admitted to the hospital after falling in the lobby this morning. The patient is in a lot of pain and appears to have a broken hip from the injury. The patient goes on to describe the incident and asks him why this would happen in the hospital. She states, “I thought the hospital was a safe place. Don’t they have programs to prevent these things?”
A wave of guilt floods over Mike. He questions himself, “Could I have prevented this from happening?” Mike is now faced with a new dilemma. Should he admit to his supervisor what occurred upon his arrival to work this morning? What if by his admission, he is terminated anyway?
The patient is preparing to be discharged, but there has been a spill that led to the patient falling. You now need to explain that the discharge will be delayed until a full assessment has been completed. Additionally, educational materials and instructions need to be provided to the patient. A family member is present to help with discharge and follow-up instructions due to a language barrier.
The patient is sitting in the room waiting for instructions and discharge orders. The patient is getting anxious, having already waited for some time, and wants to leave. The patient does not speak English and is having a difficult time understanding why an assessment needs to be done just for falling down.
Given that the patient speaks and understands very little English, what other forms of communication might be used to provide patient education?
How would you assess if the patient understands the discharge instructions?
How will the actions of the staff member either negatively or positively impact patient care and the patient care experience?
What ethical values or decisions did the staff member make that do not align with the patient education policy?
If Mike called in to inform that he was on site, but would be late clocking in due to a spill on the floor in the lobby, would this be acceptable considering the most recent conversation about his attendance?
What, if anything, could Mike have done differently?
How much coaching and investment should be made for this one employee to perform the most fundamental functions of his job?
Are there additional considerations the manager should make?
Alternatively, if Mike did not communicate the spill with his supervisor or anyone else, what would this mean for his level of ethical consideration and risk management?
Could he be trusted to perform the essential functions of his position with sound judgment?
Additionally, a member of Risk Management viewed the video of the patient’s fall as a part of documenting an incident report. Mike was noticed on the video passing by the spill just minutes before a guest slipped and fell down. He seemingly stared at the spill and appeared to slow down to consider possible risks. If Mike neglected to confess proper care for the spill after learning of the patient’s fall, how would you address this?
Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Consider how these disorders are similar and different. Be sure to explain the changes in the arterial blood gas patterns during an exacerbation.
Write a 3-page paper that addresses the following:
• Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Consider how these disorders are similar and different. Be sure to explain the changes in the arterial blood gas patterns during an exacerbation.
• Choose a patient factor and explain how that factor (genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior) you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for a patient based on the factor you selected.
• Construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper.

Develop a tentative outline or other graphic organizer for your mini research project. You should make sure that whatever your plan is, it must be obvious to your teacher that you have spent a considerable amount of time researching and thinking through your conclusions.
In your mini research project, you will investigate this theme further. Here are some researchable questions to consider. Decide on the one you will address in your project. Remember that you will have to write about only a portion of each “big question.”
Literature
• In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is justice served when Tom Robinson is found guilty of rape?
• In The Kite Runner, which you read earlier in this course, is justice served when Sorab uses a slingshot and puts out Assef’s eye?
Social Studies
• What effect has Title IX Education Amendments of 1972 had on men’s and women’s sports at the high school and college levels?
• Choose one of these landmark decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court . What are the important details of the case? What were the short-term and the long-term effects of the case?
• Brown v. Board of Education (1954)
• Miranda v. Arizona (1966)
• Roe v. Wade (1973)
• Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978)
Current Affairs
• Many individuals in the United States are serving prison sentences for crimes they did not commit. Is the justice system always just?
• It is just that in many places of the world, children perish as a result of inadequate water and food resources while in other places, there is such an abundance that food is destroyed to keep prices stable?
• Does justice triumph when boys as young as 8 years old are forced to train for militant groups?
YOUR TASK…
Pick the researchable question that most appeals to you. Start to brainstorm about it in your study guide.
• After brainstorming, decide if you want to keep that “big question” or investigate another one instead. You will do better work if you have a topic that really interests you.
• Record your final choice of “big topic” in your study guide.
Narrowing Your Topic
Now that you have selected your researchable question, it’s time for the next step – narrowing your topic to fit the needs of the writing task.
Remember that you will NOT be writing the complete research paper. This means that you need to choose one aspect of the broader topic and focus all your research efforts and time on that smaller part. You will need to narrow your topic.
For example, suppose you chose the researchable question about Title IX and sports. The purpose of the law is to promote equality of opportunity for male and female athletes. Notice how many narrower questions are parts of that big question. Any of them would be suitable for your mini research project.
Big Question:
• What effect has Title IX Education Amendments of 1972 had on men’s and women’s sports at the high school and college levels?
Narrower Questions:
• How has Title IX affected athletic programs in my state?
• How has Title IX affected major sports such as basketball and football?
• How has Title IX affected minor sports such as swimming?
• How has Title IX affected the availability of scholarships?
• How has Title IX affected funding for sports?
• How do high school coaches react to Title IX?
• How do college coaches react to Title IX?
• What important court cases involve Title IX issues?
• What injustices have resulted because of Title IX issues?
• and many others
YOUR TASK…
Look again at the researchable question that was your final choice Reread your notes about it in your study guide.
• Brainstorm a list of possible narrower topics that you could adequately write about in one to two pages.
• Decide on the final narrow topic you will research and write about. Record that in your study guide.
WebQuest: Research Your Topic
First, you selected your researchable question. Next, you narrowed it to the part of the “big question” that you will address in your mini research project. Now it’s time for the next step – finding information about it.
Think back to the Section Warm-Up, “Finding Reliable Research Sources on the Internet.” That is exactly what you are looking for.
Step 1: State your preliminary thesis.
• Take your “big question” and answer it from what you already know about it.
• If you are working in the Title IX question, you might create this thesis: The Title IX Education Amendments of 1972 have had a harmful effect on men’s sports in this state without significantly increasing women’s access to athletic programs.
Step 2: Look for reliable Information on the Web that (a) supports your thesis and (b) does NOT support your thesis.
• Look for articles that give facts rather than opinions.
• Look for articles that help you understand the topic in more detail. You might not quote or reference these articles. Instead they will help you decide which sources are the best to use. Try to find 3-4 articles of this kind.
• Look for articles that you can reference specifically in your project. Try to find 3-4 articles of this kind.
• Print the best articles or save them on your computer.
Step 3: Be sure to have citation information in hand before leaving the web site.
• Look for author’s name, the title of the page, and the name and URL of the website.
• Information changes or disappears. Write down the date you last accessed the web site.
The Writing Process: Organize Your Thoughts
Part 3: Reading to Research Your Project
You have chosen the part of the “big question” that you will write about in your mini research project. Now it’s time for the next step – finding information about it.
If you are uncomfortable with an outline, you may try using a web or another visual organizer. Whatever you use, make sure it is effective for you.
It does not really matter how you organize your writing. It does matter that you take the time to do that.
Assignment
Develop a tentative outline or other graphic organizer for your mini research project. You should make sure that whatever your plan is, it must be obvious to your teacher that you have spent a considerable amount of time researching and thinking through your conclusions.
How did the Africans experience the Middle Passage? Or How did slavery shape the family life of the enslaved in the American South?
You are required to read the graphic novel, Inhuman Traffick by by Rafe Blaufarb and Liz Clarke.
Your assignment after you have throughly read the novel is to complete a comparison paper using one of the monographs from the provided list.
The central historical question in this paper will look at one of the following questions:
How did the Africans experience the Middle Passage?
Or
How did slavery shape the family life of the enslaved in the American South?
Choose one of the approved monographs and write an analysis on the book, comparing and
contrasting your selection to various elements found in the Inhuman Traffick graphic novel. Your paper must be at least three pages in length with a thesis.
Two Different Essays on “Defending Slavery” by Paul Finkelman
Your overall objective is to master the major themes in Defending Slavery by Finkleman. This will require a full reading of the book and some good old fashion “thinking.” Please appreciate that this is not a research paper, hence, you do NOT need to consult or cite outside sources. However, I do expect carefully selected points from the book to demonstrate that you read it. Again, criticize the book using solely evidence from the book and cite the evidence appropriately. The physical aspect of this critique, and to measure your Student Learning Outcome, must follow the parameters below:
Grammar and Syntax
1. Please follow MLA format: double-space, times roman, 12 font, 1 inch margins, 1000 to 1500 word count.
2. Organization is imperative: Introduction, body, conclusion
3. Ensure transitional lines between paragraphs
4. At all cost avoid the “passive voice”—limit the use of “is, are, was, were, should, could, would, have, had, has.
5. Avoid first-person singular—limit the use of “I”
6. Avoid the negative-voice—“I didn’t like this or that”
7. Avoid generalizations—be specific and provide evidence from the readings (don’t forget to cite it!)
8. Use a thesaurus (or dictionary) to expand your vocabulary (e.g. instead of “happy,” use “elated” or “estatic.”)
10. Read Elements of Style by Strunk and White to improve any stylistic challenges.
11. I will expect a professionally written critique.
12. All papers must indicate their word count on the first page and next to your name.
Substantive and Grading Rubric
1. +10 points:
Provide an overall summary of the book including its major themes. This can be accomplished in less than one page and please do NOT include your precis in this section. Again, your first page should be a summary of the whole book.
2. +10 points:
After you summarize the book, then identify at least two themes you will discuss for analysis. Again, you must identify two (2) themes!
3. +60 points:
Once you summarize the book and identified your two themes, then provide a critical analysis on your selected themes. Please appreciate that this section constitutes the bulk of your paper. Now, what constitutes a critical analysis? By this I do not mean whether you like or dislike the author’s objectives. You must discuss/reflect critically on your selected themes Your aggressive critical analysis must be supported by the evidence. Your critique must be thoughtful and nicely organized. Remember that there are no right or wrong responses, but you will have to defend your contentions. You may want to consider the below as you develop your critique:
a. Did the author succeed in developing the themes?
b. Do you agree with the themes? If not, why not and provide evidence.
c. What did you enjoy about the book or what did you dread?
d. Would you recommend this book?
Please appreciate that a critique is your opinion based on the evidence (emphasis on evidence.)
4. +10 points:
Conclusion: properly summarize your critique. All papers must deliver a proper conclusion.
5. +10 Grammar, syntax, organization of paper.
In Short, your paper will consist of:
1. Book summary +10 pts
2. Selected two themes +10 pts
3. Criticism of selected themes. +60 pts
4. Conclusion +10 pts
5. Grammar/syntax +10 pts
Notes on Citations:
This book critique is NOT a research term paper. I do not want a paper full of long (block) quotations from the book or any other outside source. I most certainly do not want footnotes or endnotes. The paper is an exercise in critical thinking based on your selected themes. If you consult professional sources then merely use them as a “guide” to your paper. Try to get some “idea” on how others have treated the book. Think of the paper as an “op-ed’ (opposition to the editorial opinion) piece in your local newspaper. Anderson is stating a point (his opinion) and your role is to identify it, evaluate it, and, of course criticize it! Obviously, to make your point/opinion you will need to quote certain sections from the book, but please limit them and cite them properly. Again, please do not rely on outside sources to develop your paper.

Assignment 1: Short writing 1 page
1. Respond to 2 questions. Your responses need to be substantial and thoughtful. You need to explain why, with reasoning or evidence/examples of your own.
1) Why is plagiarism detrimental to good argumentation (aside from the obvious harm of intellectual theft)?
2) Regardless of your opinion about the topic, which do you think makes the strongest argument? Why?
2. Respond to other student’s question in a meaningful and thoughtful. “What is exactly civility is or how should we define it? Do we have gone so far in plagiarism?”
3. Make a question of your own to other students.
Assignment 2: Short essay 3 pages required
A lot has been said about the decline of civility, and you’ve watched 3 videos on the subject, from different sources and different perspectives. In 3-4 paragraphs explore the following questions:
1. What is YOUR perspective about this issue? Do you think that there’s been a decline in civility in our society in recent years? If so, what do you think caused it? If you think there has NOT been a decline, why is there so much talk about it?
2. What is the role of media, and pop culture, in the discussion about, and the possible decline of, civility? Do you see changes in how tv shows, movies, songs, etc. reflect civility in our society? Do they reflect it, create it, or some combination of the two?
3. How can you relate the ideas about civility in the videos to the chapter about plagiarism in our textbook? Offer specific examples here.

THE FIVE GENERIC COMPETITIVE STRATEGIES
Chapter 5
Book: Essentials of Strategic Management: The Quest for Competitive Advantage by Gamble, Peteraf, and Thompson, Jr.
In this chapter, we build on past information by discussing ways in which firms formulate business strategies that capitalize on their resources and capabilities to exploit opportunities in their competitive environments. As we have seen, business strategy refers to the competitive moves and business approaches that a firm makes in an effort to establish its competitive posture.
As a rule, competitive position can be established in many different ways, and the task of finding the best configuration of positions falls to strategic managers. Deciding which generic strategy to employ is perhaps the most important strategic commitment a company makes – it tends to drive the rest of the strategic actions a company decides to undertake, and it sets the whole tone for the pursuit of a competitive advantage over rivals.
Your assignment this week:
1) Identify three (3) companies (other than those listed in Question #4) from dissimilar industries that are pursuing focused differentiation strategies; explain, entirely in your own words, how these firms achieve competitive advantage. (15 points)
2) Identify three (3) companies (other than those listed in Question #4) that are pursuing best- cost provider strategies; describe in detail, entirely in your own words, the specific characteristics that make each of these firms a best-cost provider. (15 points)
3) Explore Kohl’s web sites at kohls.com and corporate.kohls.com, and conduct any additional research you deem necessary to better understand the firm’s vision, mission, and approach. What activities contribute to the company’s differentiation strategy and the unique position in the industry that Kohl’s has achieved? (35 points)
4) Which of the five generic competitive strategies do you think each of the following companies is employing (do whatever research at the various company Web sites that might be needed to arrive at, and support, your answer)? Fully justify your reasoning for each. (35 points)
a. GameStop
b. Amazon
c. ALDI
d. Sears
e. Best Buy
f. Sally Beauty
g. Gallery Furniture
