Critique a video

The following are guidelines on how to write your critiques.

o What do you think is the main point of the speaker or video/film?
o What do you think are the most important aspects of the research or work presented and why?
o What are its strengths and weaknesses?
o What impacted you the most and how did it provide context to the material covered in lecture?
o When the viewings present causes and consequences of environmental change and/or propose solutions to those changes, are experts and peer-reviewed research involved? If unsure, do a quick search to find out using the methods discussed in class.
o When the viewings address solutions to environmental impacts, how well do the approaches follow principles of sustainability and/or the process of science?
o When watching documentaries, be sure that you can distinguish between fact and opinion, bias and objectivity.
o Are experts presenting findings or are celebrities or politicians or representatives of special interest groups voicing opinions?
o Are any issues being overstated or conversely, downplayed? If so, how?
o When the viewings provide further description or detail on science concepts covered in class, comment on how well they helped clarify and/or expand on your understanding of the material.

Explain and evaluate Socrates’ claim in the Apology that “the unexamined life is not worth living for a human being,” and briefly analyze and discuss the particular method he uses to discover the truth (i.e., dialectics or the Socratic Method)

In a 750-1000 word essay, please respond to the following:
Explain and evaluate Socrates’ claim in the Apology that “the unexamined life is not worth living for a human being,” and briefly analyze and discuss the particular method he uses to discover the truth (i.e., dialectics or the Socratic Method). Do you agree that a human being cannot live a fully satisfying life if he or she remains ignorant, like the slavish prisoners in Plato’s cave? Why or why not?
Finally, in support of your argument, please refer to specific passages in the video (Alain de Botton’s “Socrates on Self-Confidence—Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness,” available on YouTube via the link below) as well as to your own life experiences and observations.

Grading Rubric:
The following standards are numbered in order of importance for grading.
1.Essay demonstrates an understanding of the material: The student has correctly grasped a philosophical problem or question, has explained it accurately, and on the basis of a substantially correct interpretation of any texts involved. Key terms are used correctly. The essay shows evidence of the student’s independent thought, and is written in his or her distinctive voice. Short (one sentence) quotations are used (comprising no more than 10% of the body of the paper), when appropriate, to support the writer’s analysis, and an explanation is offered for each quotation. The use of block quotations will result in a severe point deduction.
50 points
2.Essay has clear and coherent argument: There is a clearly stated thesis, and support for this thesis in the body of the paper. Each paragraph contributes to this argument, and follows logically from the paragraph before it. The argument presented is persuasive. The insights of two other philosophers are incorporated into the analysis.
50 points
3.Essay fulfills assigned task: The essay addresses the entire assigned question or topic, elaborating on important ideas in satisfactory depth, but without bringing in anything extraneous or irrelevant. The introduction of the essay focuses and provides clarity for the paper. Important terms are clearly and accurately defined. Each paragraph conveys a coherent, organized thought. Short (one sentence) quotations are occasionally used, when appropriate, to support the writer’s analysis, and an explanation is offered for each quotation. No more than 10% of paper is made up of direct quotes. No block quotations.
40 points
4.Essay obeys standards for good persuasive writing: the writer shows that he or she is comfortable using philosophical language, and the prose is clear, not awkward. The structure of the sentences reflects the relationships between/among the ideas discussed.
40 points
5.Essay is technically correct: The essay has been carefully and thoughtfully proofread. The argument is written in complete sentences, with punctuation that does not mislead the reader. There are no mistakes in spelling

Impact of Cyber Crime on Businesses

This is a research pitch presentation so please write as 1st person on why this research pitch is important what are the various facets that the question will investigate why this topic is important to business and the wider world as move more and more to technology and computers. The question for this research pitch is;

“”What is the true impact of Cyber Crime on Businesses?””

I will then also engage to write the full research paper for this question later next month.

A critical skill is the demonstrated ability to present one’s own research. Students are therefore required to present their research design in 3 minutes in a unique and individual manner that conveys the argument and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience. Consider the presentation as a type of “pitch” for your research. That is, if you wanted an organization to give you funding to carry out your research how would you present it. To be written in 1st person as it will need to be presented in class.

The Question
Based on the content in James A. Sandos’s Converting California, address the following question. Despite Spanish efforts to make the native Californians adopt Spanish religious and cultural practices, in what ways did native people manage to retain their own culture? How were they able to do this?

This is a broad question and you will not be able to include all the information available, thus you must decide on a couple of important points or pieces of evidence that support your argument.

Writing Instructions
The essay must be three-to-five complete pages of text (no unnecessary spaces and excluding bibliography), double-spaced, in a twelve point Times New Roman font. Remember to follow the rules for writing a formal essay and include the essential components for an essay, including citations. Students must use Chicago Manual of Style for their citations. This means that your paper should have an introduction, thesis (required), body, conclusion, and bibliography. Since writing style and grammar will be graded, I recommend you utilize the history tutoring writing center and my office hours. Remember, this paper is worth 100 points and is a considerable portion of your grade, utilize all the resources at your disposal, do not wait at the last minute to complete this assignment.

Canvas Writing Guides
On Canvas you can find the “Jules Benjamin Writing Guide” and “Writing Guide for History 369” to help you think about the writing process.

Chicago Manual of Style (Link to online citation guide on Canvas).

Using either footnotes or endnotes your first citation of the book should be:

James A. Sandos, Converting California: Indians and Franciscans in the Missions (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2008), 126. (Page 126 is used as an example but change the page number to the page where you found the information)

Each additional citation for the book should be:
Sandos, Converting California, page number

If you are citing the same book repeatedly you can simply write: Ibid, 14 (page number varies).

Citation for the bibliography/works cited is a little different than the note above:

Sandos, James A. Converting California: Indians and Franciscans in the Missions. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2008.

If you are going to cite other material using the Chicago Manual of Style consult the Canvas guide.

Avoid plagiarism, the use of someone else’s work without citing it. If you have any questions concerning plagiarism consult the syllabus.

Grading Guide.
When grading essays these factors will be considered when I decide on a final grade:
1) Strength of argument
2) Clear writing free of awkward phrases and sentences (if you are having trouble with this then use simple uncomplicated language and focus on ideas rather than vocabulary and have someone read the paper for clarity)
3) Does the paper follow directions and answer the question fully
4) Use of specific events, people, laws, dates, etc. to prove points not just general ideas and arguments
5) Analysis not just summary

(Remember to list books in alphabetical order)

In this assignment, you are asked to explore environmental issues in Canada. The premise for this application assignment is that you are the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada. During your election campaign you stated that if elected you promise to take swift action to deal with one of Canada’s major environmental concerns.

In this assignment, you are asked to explore environmental issues in Canada. The premise for this application assignment is that you are the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada. During your election campaign you stated that if elected you promise to take swift action to deal with one of Canada’s major environmental concerns.

PART 1: Which environmental problem are you going to tackle?

For the environmental challenge you are working with, please do the following:

(a) Explain the reasons why you have chosen this particular environmental challenge.
(b) Identify scientific sources to validate that this is an environmental concern in Canada.
(c) Describe how you are going to measure this environmental challenge. This is referred to as the measured variable in your assignment.

PART 2: What is your action plan to solve this environmental challenge?

For the environmental challenge you are working with, please do the following:

(a) Describe how you plan to solve your environmental challenge.
(b) Identify scientific sources to prove that your solution to the environmental challenge is valid.
(c) Describe how you are going to measure that your solution was effective. What positive effect did your implemented changes have on the measured variable?

For example:

The importance of potable water is becoming a major concern as less then 1% of the water on earth is potable, which means drinkable.

If I was the “Pm”, I would implement a new environmental policy and give every Canadian household a .5 litre container of bottled water to place in their toilet tank.

This action would reduce the amount of water per flush by .5 Litres x 16 flushes per day for an average family = 8 Litres.

This would result in a savings of 8 litres of potable water per day, per family across our nation.

In this case the measure variable is…the potable water. The positive result is the 8 litres of potable water saved each day.

Please note that this is my example and you cannot use this idea for your assignment. You need to be creative and develop your own idea to improve our environment.

Sexual Communication

Discussion: Sexual Communication

By the due assigned, post your response to the discussion below in the Discussion AreaThrough the end of the module, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Ask a question, remark on an analysis presented, or suggest an alternative view. Be sure to formulate a thoughtful and substantive response.

Sexual Communication

Athena and Marcus have been dating for several months, and it is clear to both that they will soon be lovers. They are both excited and secretly a little worried about getting sexually involved. Marcus has only had one other serious girlfriend with whom he had intercourse, and she broke his heart. He is constantly worried about what Athena thinks and if she will cheat on him. He would have become sexually intimate much sooner if Athena had consented. Athena had some disappointing experiences with lovers who ignored her arousal needs and rushed her into intercourse. As a result, intercourse has usually been uncomfortable and she has never had an orgasm with a lover. She loves Marcus unconditionally and wants only to make him happy.

Although at first glance, this looks like a disaster waiting to happen, it is also potentially an opportunity for Athena and Marcus to experience both a deepening of their emotional relationship and a satisfying sexual encounter if they are both willing to talk about their concerns.

Given what you have learned from this module’s readings and lecture, answer the following:

  • What “love style” describes Marcus and Athena? Are they compatible?
  • Describe how either of them can begin a conversation and voice their concerns before they become sexually involved.
  • What reasons might hold both of them back from initiating such a conversation?
  • Describe ways in which Marcus and Athena could additionally help each other explore their concerns and requests during and after their first sexual encounter.

Write your initial response to each part in 3–4 paragraphs. Support your arguments with research, applying APA standards to citation of sources.

Part 1- students will find a current news article (online or in print) about a current political event, issue, election, debate (etc.) that has taken place within the federal level of American governments or politics, in the last 3 months, News articles must be connected the topic(s) assigned to the week that they are due.

Whats a summary analysis, you say? The grandaddy of political science, Harold Lasswell, is known for defining Politics. , Ideological values, beliefs, and opinions, aside, when it comes to government and politics, his definition of the word (ironically) is probably the only thing that all mankind can agree on. Lasswell, defines politics, as “who, gets what, where, when, and how”. Apply that definition to the article’s information, or the article’s information to that definition, and write a 10 sentence summary that focuses on critically evaluating what is going on, from your personal perspective. Interject your opinion. You should be making a statement, argument, and your opinion about the subject matter, should be known. However, this needs to be done in a scholarly and academic manner. Focus on explanation, reason and rationalization, to provide a clear opinion statement and discussion of their personal perspective and political position towards the event or issue in their article. In addition, to receive full credit, students MUST include a direct link to the original article’s text that they are using to complete this assignment.

Part 2- students will review summary analyses submissions, made in part 1, and offer a rebuttal to a classmate’s current event analysis, which opposes their own. MOST IMPORTANTLY, BE CONSTRUCTIVE in your critiques; and RATIONAL in your explanation of your perspective. Rebuttals must be 5-10 sentences in length.

Both parts are to be submitted to this discussion bored. Reply directly to the original post of your peer, when completing part 2. .

You must complete part 1, and post your article with the summary analysis, before you will be able to review and respond to the post’s of your peers.

How did Napoleon deal with political malcontents who wanted to see him murdered or otherwise overthrown? • How did Napoleon’s attitude and policies toward political malcontents give Claude François de Malet the opportunity to overthrow him? • How did Napoleon change his attitudes, policies, or general leadership style as a result of Malet’s conspiracy against him?

For the last three weeks, we’ve talked about the available research relevant to your chosen topic and how you might narrow your focus to develop a strong argument for your Master’s thesis. Let’s focus even more on the argument this week.
To start your initial post, I’d like you to provide a single sentence argument for your thesis. For my own work, for example, I may have said something like: Napoleon’s attitude and policies toward political malcontents, such as Claude François de Malet, were directly responsible for creating the opportunities they needed to attempt to overthrow him.
Secondly, provide at least three questions that you expect to have to answer in your thesis project that are directly related to your argument. For me, they may have been something like:
• How did Napoleon deal with political malcontents who wanted to see him murdered or otherwise overthrown?
• How did Napoleon’s attitude and policies toward political malcontents give Claude François de Malet the opportunity to overthrow him?
• How did Napoleon change his attitudes, policies, or general leadership style as a result of Malet’s conspiracy against him?
Finally, provide a paragraph to explain how your thesis process is going so far. What roadblocks do you see in your path? Have you found any particularly interesting or useful sources? Are you having a hard time finding appropriate source material?
