Government term Project

Step 1 – Identifying the Issue
Identify an issue that involves federalism, then conduct research on how both the US federal government and Texas state government addressing it (this requires examining the history, application and effectiveness of laws at both levels).
Pick one of the following topics:
• Women’s rights and funding for family planning
• Women’s rights and access to abortion services
• Public education policy and funding
• Public education policy and Common Core
• Environmental policy and air pollution
• Environmental policy and hydraulic fracking
• Affordable Care Act and Medicaid funding
• Joint law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking
• Joint law enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking
• Texas Voter ID Law and the Voting Rights Act (1965)

Step 2 – Gathering Sources
Conduct research to locate three peer-reviewed academic journal articles (aka: scholarly sources) that specifically address the policy issue that you selected and meet the following criteria:
• The articles must be no more than ten (10) years old.
• The article must have more than five (5) pages of actual content (without graphs, charts, footnotes, citations, etc.).
• Books will not count toward the minimum research requirements.
• Carefully choose those sources that provide a variety of perspectives on your selected topic.
• In addition to the minimum research requirements, you should offer “supplemental sources” for essential current events information relevant to your topic. These may include academic sources that are not peer-reviewed (position papers), newspaper articles, magazine articles, and other quality or reputable sources.
• Textbooks, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias (including Wikipedia), Almanacs, or an Atlas are reference materials and are not to be listed as sources on the collegiate level.
• Provide the formal MLA citation for each source, both in the essay and on the works cited page.

Step 3 – The Proposal
Submit a one-page proposal to the appropriate dropbox by the date specified in the course calendar. The proposal is to contain the following:
• Identify the topic in a single paragraph by:
o Include a bibliography listing the three primary sources. The citations are to be formatted using MLA citation style.
o Summarize the policy topic you will be addressing.
o Describe the current status of the policy or topic.
• Describe why the policy is important.
• A model proposal has been provided in eCampus.
Revise and Resubmit Policy: The purpose of the proposal process is for your instructor to confirm that 1) you have selected three appropriate peer-reviewed journal articles and 2) that you have selected an appropriate topic. Additionally, it allows your instructor to give you feedback on your writing (grammar, sentence composition, punctuation, and spelling) as well as your use of proper MLA citation formatting.

Should you submit a proposal that does not address a topic that meet the criteria, or does not have three peer-reviewed journal articles, you will be asked to “revise and resubmit” the assignment. In such cases, each revision will be deducted 10 points and after 4 attempts the assignment will earn a zero and will be considered incomplete.

The instructor will inform you of the due date and conditions of resubmission. Failure to resubmit the revision before the provided due date, or failure to correct the identified issues in need of revision, will result in a zero for the proposal grade.
Failure to complete the proposal or a requested revision will result in the entire assignment being incomplete.
Step 4 – The Policy Paper
Your task will be to prepare a formal research paper regarding the selected policy. The assignment is to be around 5-6 pages with in-text citations for your research. The minimum writing requirement is a 1000 of your own words or around 3 pages of a word document (excluding the cited information). The essay is to discuss each of the following prompts:
• An introduction and brief overview of the policy relationship.
• What are the major issues facing each level of government?
• What are the reasons for initiating changes to the policy?
• What are the options to be considered (discuss several)?
• What are the pros and cons of each potential reform (costs v. benefits)?
• Which is the best option moving forward (pick one)?
• A summary and conclusion

Gender Stereotypes in Korean EFL Textbooks and their impact in Language Learning

study intends to evaluate whether Korean EFL textbooks contain gender stereotypes that may have negative impact among learners specifically when they communicate with native English speakers. My study seeks to investigate gender stereotypes in Korean EFL textbooks and their impact on language- learning among EFL students as revealed by research studies which include gender related reading, writing and dialogues in the textbook.
Korean EFL textbooks reflect Korean Stereotypes because they are mostly written by Korean authors. For example, in Korea, in general, when the husband is speaking, the wife may not interrupt but instead, just listen to her husband. In Korea, “ silence is golden for women” whereas frankness and outspokenness are typical of American women. This is why Americans often think Korean women are unfriendly, while Korean often think American women are too talkative.

Pick your own article/example of a modern satire (not a “Modest Proposal” since we have already read this one), and discuss what makes it good satire, what one needs to know to “get” the satire, and why some might misunderstand this and think it is “real.

Pick your own article/example of a modern satire (not a “Modest Proposal” since we have already read this one), and discuss what makes it good satire, what one needs to know to “get” the satire, and why some might misunderstand this and think it is “real.” Provide at least two outside sources that are “real” about the subject being satirized.

You want to pick a satire that deals with a serious topic. Here are some examples of topics that are often satirized to bring attention to a social problem:

–social injustice

–racism

–sexism

–discrimination based on gender identity

–intolerance of a religious belief or a culture or a society or a group

–stereotyping in a way that is hurtful, degrading, mean-spirited

–environmental issues

–health issues

–poverty

–crime

–violence

This of course is not an all-inclusive list, but the point is you want to pick a satire that deals with a serious social issue (like Swift does when he is dealing with the topic of poverty in Ireland).

I have provided you links to The Onion and The Daily Currant, both good sources of satirical news stories that often deal with serious issues.

If you wish, rather than using one of these sites, you could pick one episode/skit from The Simpson’s, South Park, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, or even Saturday Night Live and provide an analysis of why this is satire and what it is satirizing and why. If you decide to do this, you need to pick one episode/skit that deals with a serious social problem (Swift was bringing attention to the social problem of poverty and starvation) like war, environmental concerns, poverty, racism, discrimination, gun control, illegal immigration, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, social awareness, suicide, poverty, etc.

For this paper, do not pick a movie–movies satire many, many subjects. Also, if you pick something visual (not an article), it must be one episode/skit/segment, not the entire show! For example, I don’t want a general paper on how funny South Park is, and a general list of all the social problems it satirizes. Rather, I would want you to pick one episode from South Park, and give me a very thorough analysis of why it is a satire, and what it is satirizing, and what the viewer would need to know to “get it”, and what the facts/issues are being satirized. How does this episode make you think? What issues are addressed here? What is the problem? Who is part of the problem? Does the episode offer glimpses into a possible solution (Swift, at the end of his satire, has a paragraph on what could be done to help solve the problems of poverty in Ireland).

You don’t want to pick an example that is only meant to make fun of someone or something for laughs. Social satire can be and often is funny, but at its heart its purpose is to make us think, question our beliefs and behaviors, and perhaps encourage us to make changes to help solve the problem.

Once you have found your example of satire that you want to be the subject of your paper, you will do the following:

Briefly summarize in the first paragraph what/where/when this satire was published or released and what it is satirizing.
Provide your thesis (this is an effective satire or not and why)
Focus on these areas: How does the article/episode/skit make the reader/viewer think? What does one need to know to “get it”. What problems are addressed in the satire? Who is identified as part of the problem? Does the episode offer glimpses into a possible solution?
Give examples throughout your essay of how the satire is aware of its audience (satire only works if the audience “gets it”), and what specific elements of the problem it is satirizing. Be specific here–it is good to include specific quotations and moments of excellent satire, but you don’t want to just summarize the entire text/episode. Assume your reader has read or seen this specific satire, and your job is to analyze it, provide examples of why it is good satire, and explain with your sources the issue being satirized. It is not to summarize the work!!

Use your two outside sources (these can be from a credible online news source, or any publication that is up-to-date and is credible) to explain the serious topic being satirized (what happened in the news, the issue, the problem, etc). If it isn’t satirizing a recent news event but rather is satirizing a general social problem, just provide sources that explain that problem (world poverty rates, drunk driving stats, percentage of people who are dealing with discrimination, etc.).
Conclude your paper by making the case this satire works well (or doesn’t) and why.
This paper should be in third person (third person can be more authoritative), should contain a works cited of at least three sources (the satire you have picked and the two outside sources), and should be at least 1,000 words (the word count also includes the works cited, so the actual paper will be a bit under 1000 words).

discuss is the difference between ethical decisions, moral decisions and legal decisions made by a public administrator.

discuss is the difference between ethical decisions, moral decisions and legal decisions made by a public administrator. Then create your own scenario. It should be set in a public agency or body in keeping with our public administration focus. Please fill in enough information so your classmate can make an educated analysis, for instance the state in which it occurred and the agency so they can find the code. Don’t offer your thoughts on whether the scenario is a situation which would present an ethical, moral and/or legal dilemma. For your responses please answer that question for another student’s scenario and explain your reasoning. If there is not enough information, note what you would need to make a decision and the person who posted the scenario can fill in the gaps.

You must first develop two principles of ethical change management that should be applied to the management of change.

You must first develop two principles of ethical change management that should be applied to the management of change. The principles should be applicable to most change situations that a manager may face, and they should be grounded in the change management literature. At least four references must be used in completing this task.
Next, you must analyse the behaviour of Mark Dawson, Senior VP of Operations, as follows.
(i)Identify whether Mark Dawson is resisting the change that Cheryl Hailstrom is seeking to make. Your choice must be justified, with reference to relevant change management studies.
(ii)Critique the response of Cheryl Hailstrom towards Mark Dawson, using relevant change management literature and the principles that you formed earlier
(iii)Recommend no more than three measures that can be taken by Cheryl to manage the evident resistance that you have found, with reference to relevant change management studies. The measures must show that the principles of ethical change management that you developed are being applied.
At least ten references must be provided for this component of the task.

Ethics Committee Case Study

Ethics Committee Case Study
John, a 32 year-old lawyer, had worried for several years about developing Huntington’s chorea, a neurological disorder that appears in a person’s 30s or 40s, bringing rapid uncontrollable twitching and contractions and progressive, irreversible dementia. It leads to death in about 10 years. John’s mother died from this disease. Huntington’s is autosomal dominant and afflicts 50% of an affected parent’s offspring. John had indicated too many people that he would prefer to die rather than to live and die as his mother had. He was anxious, drank heavily, and had intermittent depression, for which he saw a psychiatrist. Nevertheless, he was still a productive lawyer. John first noticed facial twitching three months ago and two neurologists independently confirmed a diagnosis of Huntington’s. He explained his situation to his psychiatrist and requested help committing suicide. When the psychiatrist refused, John reassured him that he did not plan to attempt suicide any time soon. However, when he went home, John pinned a note to his shirt to explain his actions and to refuse any medical assistance that might be offered, then, ingested all of his antidepressant medication. His wife, who did not yet know about his diagnosis, found him unconscious and rushed him to the emergency room without removing the note.
• What should the care team at the emergency room do?
• Discuss this question using the following topics and analyzing how these issues are applied to the decision made by the emergency room care team. Use at least two scholarly sources to support your discussion. Your initial post should be a minimum of 250 words.
• Review of the topics within this case:
o Medical Indications: There are two diagnoses/prognoses that merit consideration. The underlying chronic disease of Huntington’s has no available treatment and a bleak long term prognosis. However, there are effective treatments available for the acute diagnosis of drug overdose.
 How does the chronic diagnosis affect the team’s response to the acute condition?
o Patient Preferences: We know from the patient’s suicide note that he is refusing all medical treatment. However, what do we know about these statements of preference?
 Were they informed?
 Was the patient competent to make that decision?
o The answers to these questions remain unclear, but we do know that the patient does not have decision making capacity for the present decision of whether to proceed with the gastric emptying.
 Is there a surrogate decision- maker available?
o Quality of Life: Life with Huntington’s can be difficult with the onset of spasms and dementia. John was familiar with the quality of life associated with living with Huntington’s as he watched his mother die of this disease. On the other hand, John does have a supportive family and continues to be able to work for the time being.
 How should the diminished quality of life that is anticipated in the future affect the current decision?
o Contextual Features: Several factors in the context of this case are significant. While the patient has a legal right to refuse treatment, he is currently unconscious and his surrogate (his wife) is requesting treatment. There are also certain emergency room obligations to treat emergent conditions.
 How should the emergency staff weigh the various competing legal and regulatory duties?

Write a clear and well thought out essay on the following problem: “Your County Manager has just gone to a federally sponsored program on getting volunteers to support the management and administrative side of disaster and recovery portions of emergency management. The Manager attended a seminar on a program called ‘Professional Volunteer Disaster Survey Team (PRO-V-DST)’ which had been developed in Texas in the mid-1990’s. She was quite enthusiastic about the program as it provides a network of professional building inspectors, structural engineers, and architects who form damage survey teams that could be used by State and local governments in need of help surveying damage and evaluating structures following a disaster. In assessing post disaster flood damage to structures in one county, PRO-V-DST impressed the county engineer of that county engineer, who had been overwhelmed by the number of structures requiring a determination of substantial damage, by completing its evaluation in just 2 days. The last tornado your county suffered took weeks to get the survey done and then some of it had to be done over. The County Manager was sold on this program because it would provide professional damage survey resources at what appears to be no expenses as the teams provide volunteer labor, and FEMA provides the funding for meals, lodging, and travel expenses. What difficulties would you have to overcome in implementing a similar program in your county? Would this program really be an asset? How would you handle the County Manager?”
