Write the ideal (in your opinion) methods section to fit your research question.

Write the ideal (in your opinion) methods section to fit your research question. Use
information from the text readings, class PPT lectures and the Discussion Board
dialogue. Your submission should include but not be limited to the following:
 Write your Methods section using FUTURE TENSE since you have not conducted
the study.
 Try to avoid first person.
 State your refined/revised research question based on feedback from
Assignment 1.
 Will the study be quantitative, qualitative or a mixed method design? Use your
text to explain and apply your choice of design.
 What specific methods and associated designs will you use? Quasi-experiment?
Survey? Observation? Existing Data Analysis? Grounded Theory? Case Studies?
Other?
 Why do you think your chosen method is the best one for the job?
 How will you recruit or select your sample(s)? What specific sampling technique
is this?
 What instruments or data collection tools will you use to answer your research
question?
 How will you address the validity and reliability of the quantity and quality of
your data?
 How will you analyze your data?
 How will you structure your plan to be ethical?
EVERYTHING must relate to your refined research question. Keep in mind that you must
do more than simply write, “I will use surveys because that is the best way to answer my
question.” I want you to explain why you think it is the best method. You cannot simply
state, “I will be deal with threats to validity and reliability.” You must explain how you
will do that. And so on for every above point. As always, contact your instructor with
questions.

Applying the Theory of Utilitarianism to a Case Study

Start by reading Case #1 on page 91 (this is a real case addressing the same issue described in the example on page 29). Now, I want you to build a utilitarian argument that supports the Schaibles (the religious couple in case 1). I suspect that for some of you it will be difficult to write an argument that supports the parents, but that is part of the challenge, to understand someone whose moral reasoning might be very different from your own.

You will start your argument with the standard of utilitarianism (premise 1). Then, you will list both good and bad consequences (pains and pleasures) of the Schaibles’ actions (premises 2-5). You will then weigh the pains and pleasures in premises 2-5 against each other (premise 6). Finally you will write your conclusion which says that what the Schaibles did was right because the good consequences outweigh the bad.

We will work up to full paragraphs in assignment #3 next week, but this argument should only be 7 sentences long, and it should look like this:

Premise #1: The right thing to do is that which creates the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Happiness is gaining pleasure or relieving pain.

Premise #2: List a pain caused OR pleasure lost by the Schaibles’ actions and say to whom it was caused.

Premise #3: List another pain caused OR pleasure lost by the Schaibles’ actions and say to whom it was caused.

Premise #4: List a pleasure caused OR pain relieved by the Schaibles’ actions and say to whom it was caused.

Premise #5: List another pleasure caused OR pain relieved by the Schaibles’ actions and say to whom it was caused.

Premise #6: Weigh the good consequences listed in premises 4 & 5 against the bad consequences listed in premises 2 & 3 to show that the good outweighs the bad.

Conclusion: According to utilitarianism, what the Schaibles did was right because it brought greater happiness to a greater number.

When you write your argument, you can just copy premise #1 and the conclusion as they are written. So, what you are required to do is to create the content for premises 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. Different people will come up with different pains and pleasures, but the two important things are:

1. Read the directions for premises 2-5 carefully so that you are listing both good and bad consequences of the Schaibles’ actions – that is what makes it a dilemma. If the consequences were all good or all bad, there would be no debate; it is because both pains and pleasures were produced that it requires moral reasoning (in this case applying the theory of utilitarianism) to know how to respond.

2. Be sure to include pains and pleasures to people other than the immediate family, since Mill’s version of utilitarianism requires you to consider the happiness of all who could possibly be affected. Look again at the case about “Johnny” from the bottom left through the top right of page 37 for an example of the many people whose happiness might be affected and in what ways by that particular case. You should do the same with the Schaible case.

Select one policy or doctrine that helped the United States shift from isolationism to a Superpower during the middle of the 20th century. Discuss the policy and how it helped the US achieve this change. Your response should be a minimum 75 words in length.

• Trace the evolution of your profession (or another chosen profession), field of study, or branch of service, starting in the Cold War era and continuing all the way to the present, globalized world.
As you begin gathering research, make sure to consider important social, political, and economic movements, as well as Civil Rights struggles, that have impacted the profession you chose to write about.
You must include, but are not limited to, the following, and how they impact your chosen profession, field of study, or branch of service:
• major themes from Cold War era;
• themes or movements of the Civil Rights era; and
• challenges and opportunities of the present, globalized economy, including the realms of terrorism and technological progress.
Your final product should be a minimum of one page in length. You are required to use a minimum of two reputable sources, which must be cited and referenced in APA style

Unit VI Assessment Questions

1. Select one policy or doctrine that helped the United States shift from isolationism to a Superpower during the middle of the 20th century. Discuss the policy and how it helped the US achieve this change. Your response should be a minimum 75 words in length.

2. You are a journalist in the present. You have just been assigned to write a news story that evaluates the role of the United States during the Cold War era, specifically in Korea. Since your newspaper has a broad audience, you will need to include analysis of other shifts in this time period, including social, political, and economic changes in the Civil Rights movement as well as policies the U.S. takes that shape its role during the Cold War. Your response should be a minimum 200 words in length.

Write a thesis driven essay of at least 5 pages on one of the below topics. Please refer to “Gilgamesh” and “ The Odyssey” and be sure to USE DIRECT QUOTES from these texts to support your argument.

Write a thesis driven essay of at least 5 pages on one of the below topics. Please refer to “Gilgamesh” and “ The Odyssey” and be sure to USE DIRECT QUOTES from these texts to support your argument. There is no need to bring outside information or research for this paper, and you must address both of the epics in your essay.
Paper topics:
1. How is the issue of death addressed in the epics? In “The Odyssey” the epic hero visits the underworld, while death is a central theme in Gilgamesh. What does the protagonist learn by his encounter with death and the dead? You might also compare and contrast each era’s (Sumerian, Greek) attitude towards death as made clear in the epics.
2. How does the role of women develop from “Gilgamesh” to “The Odyssey?” Pick a female character or two from each epic and explore the ways in which women were treated and viewed in each period. Then compare the differences and similarities between the representations to see if any sort of “progress” has occurred.
3. How are the gods depicted in each of the different epics? In both the gods play a rather direct role in the action- but does that role change from “Gilgamesh” to “The Odyssey?’ Do both epics present essentially consistent picture of the role the gods play in the affairs of morals, or is there a significant change from the time of “Gilgamesh” to the time of “The Odyssey?”

1. Describe the event, its purpose, the cultural group originating from the even, when it occurred, where it occurred. 2. Are their similar events in your culture? 3. What did you see and experience at this event that you feel confident you understood accurately? 4. What did you notice that was culturally puzzling to you? 5. How did you feel or respond personally to being in a different cultural situation that was not as predictable as communication in your own culture. 6. Describe an important conclusion due to your participation in this event. 7. Demonstrate that you have a thorough understanding of culture shock and its dimensions.

Objective: To experience and observe your reactions to the “not-OK” feelings of disorientation in a strange cultural environment. Rationale: This activity is based on two widely recognized premises: 1. That culture shock is endemic; we cannot inoculate ourselves against it, but we can improve our recover mechanisms, and 2. that “not-OK” feelings, once recognized have a tendency to disappear. Procedure: Within your present cultural environment select a particular location which seems especially “foreign” to you, and plan to visit it. The location must meet only three conditions: 1. Your stay should be for at least two hours. 2. You should be able to be a participant- observer within the location you choose. Do not arrange a “guided tour”. Attempt to involve yourself directly in the activities of your chosen location. 3. You must keep a record (notebook) of your experiences, thoughts and feelings in your foreign environment. Examples of activities: assisting nurses in a mental hospital, if you are heterosexual: visiting a gay nightclub, participating in an unfamiliar religious ceremony, spending an evening with an unfamiliar ethnic group. There are many possibilities. The critical element is to choose something very different from what you are used to and which causes — even as you think about it — some sensation of discomfort. Format for submission: Your report should be approximately four double spaced typed spaces. In the report you should demonstrate knowledge of course concepts and address the following topics: 1.

Special Education Laws: Why Are They So Important?

Many families and educators erroneously take for granted that special education
services have always been available for students with disabilities. This is
not the case. There was a relatively recent time in our history when students
with disabilities did not have the right to go to school-when there was no
mandate for special education services. Children with disabilities were either
ignored or excluded from attending public schools. It was only through the persistence
of many dedicated advocates that laws were passed to provide education
for children with disabilities. These advocates can be credited for working
284 CHAPTER 10 Understanding the Laws Related to Students With Disabilities
with policy-makers to create the mandate
for special education.
The important federal laws, regulations,
and court cases that pertain
to students with disabilities are discussed
in this chapter. However, it is
also paramount for teachers to know
the specific laws and regulations that
govern special education in their
states. Teachers can find that information
through their State Department
of Education website and through
their professional organizations.
Student Stories 10.1 exemplifies
the state of education before the
Education for All Handicapped Children
Act. Three decades ago, children
with disabilities were neglected or
ignored and their education was out of the realm of possibility.
Let us now look at the basic laws that protect the rights of students with
disabilities and investigate the key concepts associated with those laws.
Laws and regulations provide protections to students with
disabilities.
In describing the steps necessary in getting legislation passed to include
students vfith disabilities in a system that not so long ago shunned and
excluded them, your authors use which word(s) to describe the efforts of the
advocates who took on this fight?
a. “Persistent”
b. “Shocking, militant, and at times violent”
c. “Stoic”
d. “Unpretentious and fatalistic”

You will write a 4-6 page paper (does not include Title and Reference pages) on a topic covered in class following the instructions below. This paper will include a review of the literature and relevant theory and a discussion of how the topic you have chosen might be affected by one individual difference variable (gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, culture, age, religion, disabilities).

In this paper you are required to cite and reference at least five peer-reviewed articles  and your textbook. If needed, you can include additional citations and references.  In addition, when submitting your paper to Turnitin, your match score must be less than 12% or the paper will not be accepted.

Suggested Steps for Completing this Assignment

Step 1: Select a concept covered in class.  You may choose any concept/topic related to this class.  Some good ways to find a topic are to review the chapters and lecture notes, think back to an interesting statement or finding reported during the lecture, or an interesting question asked by another student (or yourself) in class.

Step 2a: Research your topic.  You should start your essay with an opening paragraph that introduces your topic. Subsequent paragraphs should include a thorough review of the research related to your topic. A good way to start this process is by finding a research article cited in your textbook or one covered during class.  You will want to look specifically for original research articles that have an Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion section.  For example, if I was interested in learning more about depression, I would look in Chapter 7 of the textbook for any statements similar to my topic.  I would specifically look for citations of articles that I could read.  I would then go and read those original articles and start to build a background section.  I would summarize, paraphrase and take notes on any article I read.

Step 2b: Discuss individual differences. You should include a discussion of how your topic might affect or be affected by one individual difference variable (gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, culture, age, religion, disabilities). In your explanation, be sure to provide evidence from relevant research to support your assertions. For example, if I suspect that gender might impact depression, I could search for evidence of this idea by searching for articles on gender and depression.

Step 3: Relate your topic to a published theory.  What theories are related to your topic? To answer this question, you may find it useful to look for review articles (e.g., Psychological Bulletin & Psychology Review). You can do this by checking review articles in your search in Psych Info. For example, if I were interested in depression, I would search for review articles on this topic. I would relate the findings of articles I read in step 2 to the theories I found in step 3. Then, I would critique these theories and determine if the available research did a good job of supporting the theory. When assessing the adequacy of each theory it is OK to give your opinion (subjective analysis), however it is not ok to use first person (Do NOT use I, me, we, our, I believe, etc.).

Step 4: Future Directions/Conclusions. Now that you have familiarized yourself with the theories and current research on your selected topic, what future work is needed to further the field’s understanding of the topic? What questions do you think are still left unanswered?

Organization of Research Paper

  1. Research Papers Must Include All of the Following:
    • Title Page (1 page – separate from rest of document)

  • Introduction and Conclusion (a minimum of 4 pages)When writing this paper, you should start with an opening paragraph that introduces your topic. The next section of your paper should be a summary of the five articles. This summary will include a discussion of diversity and provide a link between past research and published theory.  You should conclude your paper by stating one question left unanswered regarding your research topic.

  • Reference Page (1 page) – All sources cited in your paper must appear on your reference page. See APA Publication Manual (6th) beginning on p. 198 for the formatting guide.

  • Wikipedia and other non-authoritative internet or popular news sources (e.g., Time Magazine, Psychology Today) are NOT ACCEPTABLE; do not include such sources in the paper. Only peer-reviewed psychological journal articles can be used for the five original research articles and the review article.

Leadership Class: Discussion Post

In the reading, Wheatley constructs an approach to adaptive leadership and followership with a twist. She suggests this is a messy era which is full of adaptive challenges for leaders and followers. A recurring question is, “How is it that we failed to learn that whenever we try to impose control on people and situations, we only serve to make them more uncontrollable” (Wheatley 2005, p. 4)? In this discussion, examine Wheatley’s twist and propose your interpretation of the twist.
Find a current events article in a credible newspaper or magazine and use it as a means to explain how you could test Wheatley’s concepts in conjunction with adaptive leadership and followership.

I attached a short Article: NCOs confront Leadership challenges, but fell free to change the Article it follow the direction above.

TransAsia Airways Flight 235 – Accident Analysis

This discussion presents a turbine engine accident investigation. It will facilitate an understanding and application of turbine engine design, system components, propeller system, and engine operation related to an aircraft accident. This is an actual accident and you are expected to apply investigative techniques to this case study. As with many investigations, not all the information will be available to the investigator. Therefore, an investigator must apply his/her knowledge and consider other potential contributing factors, which is sometimes called taking a 360-degree view of the accident factors.
You will learn much more from participating in the investigation without any previous knowledge of the events or circumstances. But if you are familiar with the accident, or have done a little research and discovered the causes of the accident, please allow your classmates the opportunity to perform their own assessment.
Examine the discussion resources below before participating in the discussion.

Discussion Questions
Respond to each of the following questions in your discussion post:
1. Explain the engine take-off performance parameters/limits during the accident sequence compared to the engine performance specifications.
2. What engine systems were involved in this accident?
3. Was this the first time the engine system, that was identified through the investigation, was identified as an issue? (If this is not the first occurrence, indicate what information was available before the accident.)
4. What field level engine investigation procedures appear to have been used to evaluate the engine? (Oftentimes the accident report does not state how the engine investigation was conducted in the field, so this question is how you believe the investigators may have approached the investigation.)
5. How may have the investigation team evaluated the engine after recovery of the wreckage? (Oftentimes the accident report does not state how the engine investigation was conducted after engine recovery, so this question is how you believe the investigators may have approached the investigation.)
6. What were the likely contributing factors to the aircraft accident (e.g., processes, procedures, maintenance, environmental, operational, etc.)? Explain why you believe these factors contributed.
7. What field conditions did the investigation team face at this accident site?
8. What possible factors contributed to the aircraft accident?
9. What, if anything, would you do differently in the investigation?

Using either John Stuart Mill’s or Immanuel Kant’s ethical theories, evaluate the morality of The Stouffer Foundation’s actions with regards to the 7 young men sent to the Virgina Episcopal School, as discussed in episode 625 of the This American Life podcast.

Using either John Stuart Mill’s or Immanuel Kant’s ethical theories, evaluate the
morality of The Stouffer Foundation’s actions with regards to the 7 young men sent
to the Virgina Episcopal School, as discussed in episode 625 of the This American Life
podcast. In other words, tell me whether that action was morally good or bad according
to the theory you picked, and tell me why it was good or bad.
Make sure you back up your evaluation of the foundation’s actions with arguments
of your own , as well as evidence from the podcast and from the philosophical theory.
Likewise make sure you carefully explain every philosophical concept you use in
your evaluation of the foundation’s actions, and defend your understanding of those
concepts by referencing the philosopher’s own writing .
As a rule of thumb, between 1/3 and 1/2 of your essay should consist of explanations of
the theory you are using. You can devote the first half of your essay’s body to that
explanation, or you can explain each part of the theory as it comes up (use your
judgment when making that decision, taking your own writing style into account).
In addition you may, if you’d like, evaluate the morality of one or more actions by
(one or more of) the young men sent to V.E.S., according to the same ethical
theory you used to evaluate the foundation’s actions. You may also use Susan
Wolf’s text here, if you find it helpful .
Requirements:
● Only use one of the ethical theories we have covered so far. Do not attempt
to write about both Kant and Mill.
● Explain the pertinent parts of the ethical theory you are using.
● Use only the information given in the assigned texts and podcast. Do
not do outside research! The objective of this paper is to evaluate how well
you have understood the assigned philosophical texts, and how well you can
apply the theory of your choice given a set amount of information about a
case. You cannot do this by “looking things up.” Use of outside sources is
prohibited.

● If you do turn to outside sources (even though doing so is not permitted) you
must include them in your bibliography. And if you borrow someone else’s
ideas (including their understanding of a theory), you must cite it. Not doing
so is plagiarism, and will result in a “zero” for this assignment (or worse
— see plagiarism policy in the syllabus).
● Cite every quote and every paraphrase you use. If you do not know what
the difference between a quote and a paraphrase is, look it up or ask!
● Although it should go without saying, you are not allowed to copy or quote
passages from the lecture notes. Those notes are given to help you
understand the assigned texts, but your papers should only reference the
original texts themselves. Lecture notes do not need to be added to your
bibliography.
● Late work will be penalized by 10 points per day , starting immediately
after the deadline (e.g. work submitted any time on October 8th will lose 10
points, work submitted any time on October 9th will lose 20 points, etc.)
● Your paper must be uploaded as Word document (doc or docx ) or a PDF
file. Documents in other formats (such as MS Works, or Apple’s Pages) will
not be accepted for credit. Also, make sure your file has uploaded
successfully. If I am unable to open your essay because the file is
“corrupted”, the essay will not be accepted, and your re-submission
may be deducted points for being late.
● The paper must be 1300-2000 words in length.
● The font used must be Times New Roman, size 12 .
● The essay must be double spaced , with margins of 1 inch or less.
● The paper should be properly cited, listing author and page number in a
parenthesis or footnote , e.g. (Lessing 99), not (Lessing 2015), and must
include complete and properly formatted bibliography page (following
the MLA format or the Chicago Manual of Style).
