In your own words, explain the purpose(s) of a Mission Statement as contrasted from the purpose(s) of a Vision Statement.  In your analysis, explain who the intended audience is for each

There are several elements that result from the planning stage but for the purpose of this Learning Activity we will focus on the development of long-term goals.  Long-term goals are set by the owners, leaders or upper management depending on the structure, size or type of organization.  Long-term goals reflect the big-picture goals and objectives are directly related to the purpose and vision that the leaders and owners develop.  In today’s change-dominated business environment long-term goals are set to be accomplished in 2-3 years’ time as opposed to the previous century’s 5-10 years.

Long-term goals are often created through planning and strategizing.  The process begins with the vision and mission of the business.  To understand the concepts of vision and mission and their role in the process, you will take the role of the leader and formulate the vision and mission of an organization.

With the addition of a new division and a new product line, senior leadership has determined that the current Mission and Vision statements may not be as relevant as they once were.  Max has tasked the team from GoTo Consulting to present a more relevant Mission and Vision statement to reflect their growing presence but also their desire to be a leader in sustainability and green products.

For this Learning activity, write one paragraph for each statement below:

  • In your own words, explain the purpose(s) of a Mission Statement as contrasted from the purpose(s) of a Vision Statement.  In your analysis, explain who the intended audience is for each.
  • Then, present your Mission Statement and explain why you took the approach that you took in crafting it.  Your explanation should reflect how your newly-crafted Mission Statement fulfills the purpose(s) of a Mission Statement.
  • And finally, present your Vision Statement and explain why you took the approach that you took in crafting it.  Again, your explanation should reflect how your newly-crafted Vision Statement fulfills the purpose(s) of a Vision Statement.

Read the article. Identify key points: the research topic, hypotheses, what was done, the results, and how the experimenter interpreted the results.

WRITING YOUR SUMMARY

  1. Read the article. Identify key points: the research topic, hypotheses, what was done, the results, and how the experimenter interpreted the results. Circling these points will help you find them when you write. Do your best to understand the article. Write notes in the margin and use a highlighter to mark important sections. Talk about the article with others and see if you can explain it to somebody who has not read the paper. You are encouraged to use half the time that you plan to spend on this assignment on this step.
  2. Write the summary. The summary should be a condensed version of the article rather than an article abstract. Abstracts are more concise and reflect the authors’ decisions about information that should be mentioned. Avoid “lifting” sentences from the article or the abstract. Use your own words. Here is one possible plan.

Plan to write at least one paragraph for each section below. For some areas (e.g. methods and discussion you will likely have more than one paragraph).

• Background  Why was the research conducted; why is the research question interesting (for them, not you)?

• Purpose of study What is the researchers’ hypothesis? Are there several hypotheses?

• Methods Who participated, how many participated, what were the materials, what is the research design – what conditions were compared, measures, procedure – what was done. Is there an independent variable and a dependent variable? Not all studies will have these variables but if it does, clearly identify the variables. What statistics were used in the study? You don’t have to understand all of the statistics to report on them.

• Results Describe the key findings. Did the results support the researchers’ hypotheses?

• Discussion What do the results mean? What are the conclusions? What are the implications? Are there plans for further research based on the test of this hypothesis?

APA style headings are appropriate. Use the headings above.

3. Revise the summary. One good step is to have someone else (who has not read the article) read your rough draft. Then have your reader describe the article in his or her own words. What readers say will clue you in to anything you have left out. You may also take your draft to the Tutoring Service offered by Learner Success Services. Then revise your paper.

rite a 1,000-word paper in which you analyze the Mickey Mantle case using the Seven-Step Decision Model.

Mickey Mantle received a liver transplant in 1995. He was a Baseball Hall of Fame center fielder for the New York Yankees whose liver was failing because of cirrhosis and hepatitis. Although the waiting period for a liver transplant in the United States is about 130 days, it took only two days for the Baylor Medical Center’s transplant team to find an organ donor for the 63-year-old former baseball hero.
According to the director of the Southwest Organ Bank, Mantle was moved ahead of others on the list because of his deteriorating medical condition; however, there were mixed feelings about speeding up the process for a celebrity. Mantle was known for overcoming immense obstacles, and many argued that the medical system should provide exceptions for heroes. He was also a recovering alcoholic, which further complicated the ethical implications of the case. Because of Mantle’s medical problems, doctors estimated that he had only a 60 percent chance for a three-year survival; whereas, liver transplant patients typically have about a 78 percent chance for a three-year survival rate.
As in the case of the liver transplant for Mickey Mantle, should the system make exceptions for anyone? Why or why not?
Write a 1,000-word paper in which you analyze the Mickey Mantle case using the Seven-Step Decision Model.

Choose 2 of the following short stories to compare and contrast in your essay: “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson “The Destructors” by Graham Greene “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne “The Prodigal Son” by St. Luke

The “Writing about Literature” section of your Perrine’s Literature textbook (pp. 1–54) and the “Writing” section of Harbrace Essentials (pp. 1–12, 15–16, 18–21, 22–28) provide helpful pointers for writing your literary essay and for academic writing in general. Be sure that you have read these sections before doing any further work for this assignment. Take particular notice of the examples of fiction essays on pp. 38–43 of Perrine’s Literature textbook.

Choose 2 of the following short stories to compare and contrast in your essay:

  • “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson
  • “The Destructors” by Graham Greene
  • “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence
  • “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • “The Prodigal Son” by St. Luke

Also, at least 1 of these elements of fiction must be the focus of your essay:

  • Conflict/Plot/Structure
  • Characterization
  • Setting
  • Theme/Authors’ Purposes
  • Point of View, and/
  • Tone/Style/Irony/Symbol/Imagery

If you need help focusing your essay, ask yourself questions that correspond to your chosen element(s).

Conflict/Plot/Structure (This is not a summary of the stories)

  • What are the basic conflicts? How do these conflicts build tension and lead to major, complicated incidents and climactic moment(s)?
  • What are the ways in which each major character experiences conflict (either with self, with other characters, or with the social and/or physical environment)?
  • How are the conflicts resolved? Do the protagonists succeed in achieving their goals?
  • Which character receives your deepest sympathy and why?

Characterization

  • Who are the main characters in the stories?
  • What are their outstanding qualities? Does the author give any indication as to how or why the character developed these qualities?
  • What are the characters’ emotions, attitudes, and behaviors? What do these indicate to the reader about the character?
  • Can the characters’ motivations be determined from the text?

Setting

  • Where and when do the stories take place (remember to include such details as geographic location, time of year, time period, if the setting is rural or urban, etc.)?
  • Do the settings make the stories believable or credible? How does setting impact the plot of the story, and how would the plot be affected if the story took place in another setting?
  • Are the characters influenced by their setting? How might they behave if they were in a different setting?
  • What atmosphere or mood does the setting create (for example, darkness may create a mood of fear or unhappiness while light or bright colors may create one of happiness)?
  • Is the setting or any aspect of it a symbol, or does the setting express particular ideas?
  • Does setting create expectations that are the opposite of what occurs?

Theme/Authors’ Purposes

  • What is the major theme (or themes) of each story?
  • Are the themes of the stories similar or different?
  • How does the author convey the theme (or themes) to the reader?
  • How do the stories’ themes relate to the authors’ purposes (some examples of author purposes are to entertain, to satirize, to realistically portray life’s problems, to analyze emotions and responses, and/or to communicate a moral message)?
  • What unique style, techniques, or devices do the writers use to communicate their themes?

Tone/Style/Irony/Symbol

  • How would you describe the tone of the piece?
  • Does the tone correspond with the action occurring in the plot?
  • What style does the author use (for example, one way an author might satirize is by including a lot of irony, hyperbole, and unrealistic scenarios)?
  • How might the story be different if the tone or style were to be changed?
  • Does the writer use irony or symbols to communicate the message?

NOTE: These questions are a means of ordering your thoughts while you collect information for your essay. You do not need to include the answers to all of these questions in your essay; only include those answers that directly support your thesis statement need to be included.

How has God developed you as a leader? Describe one or two specific ways that God has developed you as a leader.

After reading Blackaby & Blackaby chapters 3-6, respond to the questions below. Please write out each question before giving your response in complete sentences. In each response, be sure to make reference to the readings and cite your references using APA formatting.

How has God developed you as a leader? Describe one or two specific ways that God has developed you as a leader.
Describe a time that you communicated vision poorly and describe what made your communication poor and the effects of that communication. How could you have communicated your vision better?
Recount a time that a leader influenced you by her or his character and how you were affected by that. What was it about that leader that was so compelling? Is there anything about your character that could have the opposite effect in your followers?
What about spiritual leadership as defined by Blackaby and Blackaby (2001) do you find most refreshing? What do you find the most disheartening? Are there any claims or assumptions on the authors’ part that you disagree with? If so, why do you disagree?

Leadership (Concepts of followership and Critique the activities of follower)

Read the case study, “A Match Made of Mission. (attached)” and Address the following questions:

1) Relate the main characters of this case study and their roles with L-NEAT. Describe what motivates each character and who are considered stakeholders.
2) Compare Ella Starr and Craig King as board members and followers for L-NEAT. Distinguish the ways their actions affect the overall successes and failures of L-NEAT.
3) Consider the role of the board of directors and staff in relation to the rising tension between L-NEAT and NEAT. Analyze what is occurring within L-NEAT to promote the disequilibrium.
4) Jason Young appears to be the L-NEAT hero. Examine his actions. To what extent did his actions contribute to the successes or failures of the followers and the organization? To what extent did the actions of the followers contribute to Young’s successes or failures?
5) Distinguish the different roles that mission-driven and leader-driven followers played at L-NEAT. Examine the actions of those followers and their effects on the outcome of the case study.
6) Use the follower typology of either Kelley or Kellerman to categorize the characters in the case study.

You must used the week Reading and Materials (attached) concepts to answer the above question:
