Cognitive Learning Theory

situation: A group of 50 – 60 year old men and women who are hypertensive and want to learn about what it is and how to care for themselves.

Learning Theory: Cognitive Learning Theory

Nursing Interventions:

1. Establish a therapeutic relationship with my group of patients.

2. Identify their readiness to learn a new knowledge and their goals. Assess their cognitive status.

3. Provide basic knowledge of HTN–What HTN is and the disease process. Teach about how to take blood pressure by themselves by using B/P cuff.

4. Educate on the importance of DASH diet and a healthy lifestyle.

5. Teach back. Evaluate their knowledge of HTN and how to monitor BP by themselves.

Rationale:I choose cognitive learning theory because it is widely used in education and counseling. According to Bastable (2019), cognitive learning is a very active process. This group is 50-60 years old and they want to learn about HTN. They are active learners that determines patterning of experiences. They have goals and expectations. Also, their mental status is relatively stable compare to older people.
