Art is about creating original works, yet artists are often influenced by other artists. For this Project, you will prepare and give a “gallery talk” to Museum visitors that explains and analyzes two works of art from different centuries. The purpose of your presentation is to help visitors understand the significance of what they are seeing by comparing and contrasting the paintings and placing them in their historical and cultural contexts.
In your presentation, be sure to accomplish the following:
• Provide an overview of the two painters, Titian and Manet
• Describe the two paintings, Titian’s Venus of Urbino and Manet’s Olympia, focusing on the subject matter and artistic style of each
• Compare and contrast the paintings in terms of their subject matter and style
• Discuss the historical and cultural contexts in which both paintings were created
• Explain how the specific time and place in which the artists worked influenced how they represented the woman depicted in each painting
• Include images of the artworks in your presentation. Find the images in the resources or online. You will need to manipulate the images (for example, by cropping, resizing or selecting sections of the image) to highlight different features you plan to discuss in your presentation
• Be sure to consider the visual appeal and readability of each slide
All information must be cited consistently, following APA format. Remember to cite the sources for all images (both edited and not).
