Cultural Awareness Essay

Carefully explain the characteristics of the performing arts, the interconnections between literature and music, and the differences between the visual arts and architecture in regards to the expression and/or interpretation of the human experience. Support your explanation of each type of art with an example (a specific work of art) that we have studied.

In order to best explain each type of art, you are encouraged to reconsider the three types of art criticism and what they each reveal about art:

Descriptive criticism (media, composition, style, etc.)
Interpretive criticism (subject matter, theme, content, etc.)
Evaluative criticism (perfection, insight, exhaustibility, etc.)
Your essay must be 1000-1500 words long and should be written in multiple paragraphs, including a short introductory paragraph, as follows:

Write a solid introductory paragraph focused on the general relationship between the arts and the human experience, including an explanation of the concept of the “human experience” (at least 100 words).
Write two or three solid paragraphs (at least 300 words) in which you explain the characteristics of the performing arts (theater, dance, and opera), focusing on how the performing arts may be used to express at least one aspect of what it means to be human. Support your explanation with ONE specific work of theater and ONE specific work of dance that we have studied in this course (TWO examples total).
Write two or three solid paragraphs (at least 300 words) in which you explain the interconnections or similarities between literature (poetry and prose) and music (instrumental classical music), focusing on how literature and music express at least one aspect of what it means to be human. Support your explanation with ONE specific work of literature and ONE specific work of music that we have studied in this course (TWO examples total).
Write two or three solid paragraphs (at least 300 words) in which you explain the differences between the visual arts (painting and sculpture) and architecture, focusing on how the visual arts and architecture express at least one aspect of what it means to be human.
