DISEASE PRESENTATION – RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT

1. Select a disease you would like to research
2. Your presentation should be made using PowerPoint. You must create a multi-slide presentation for the information
indicated below in #4, as well as a separate title slide and a separate References slide.
3. It must include a combination of figures/pictures and text and it must use pathophysiology terminology.

4. For your chosen disease, you must provide comprehensive and complete information about each of the following:
a) General, overall description of the disease (5 pts)
b) Prevalence of the disease in the U.S. population (2 pts)
– (e.g., 1 in 100,000 people; 30% of the population)
c) Risk factors and etiology (5 pts)
– list and explain the factors associated with the development of your disease topic
d) Pathogenesis/pathophysiology (15 pts)
– explain how the disease damages the body (cell/organ changes – how do the risk factors/etiology
actually cause the clinical manifestations to occur)
e) Clinical manifestations and diagnostics (15 pts)
– list all major manifestations associated with your disease along with all diagnostic information
(imaging, lab work, etc.)
f) Complications/sequelae (10 pts)
– list all major complications/sequelae that may occur as a result of the disease
g) Treatment options (10 pts)
– list major treatments used for the disease and explain how each treatment works to cure and/or
manage the disease
h) Prognosis (3 pts)
– provide the outcome of the disease with and without treatment
5. You must use a minimum of 5 clear, appropriate figures/tables associated with the information you provide. Each
figure must be relevant to your topic, clear and easy to read, and not a duplicate of another figure. Each figure must
have a separate title and reference in order for it to be considered 1 figure (if a picture has more than 1 image, but
only 1 title, it is considered to be 1 FIGURE). (10 pts)
6. References and APA format (10 pts)
YOU MUST REFERENCE YOUR MATERIAL APPROPRIATELY AND LIST ALL SOURCES OF INFORMATION. YOU MUST
USE A MINIMUM OF 3 SOURCES AND REFERENCE THE MATERIAL USING APA FORMAT FOR BOTH IN-TEXT
CITATIONS AND IN A “REFERENCES” SECTION ON A SECOND POWERPOINT SLIDE. PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE
TOLERATED AND MAY RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO FOR THE ENTIRE ASSIGNMENT.
– you must use REPUTABLE sources for your information (textbooks, journals, .gov websites, CDC, Mayo Clinic,
university websites, etc.) NO WebMD, Wikipedia, newspapers, magazines, blogs, facebook posts, Buzzfeed,
Huffington Post, etc. If you are in doubt if it is appropriate – ASK ME.
– you MAY use other websites to get your pictures – verify that the pictures are actually showing the disease that you
are researching. You must provide both in-text citations and citations in your references section for your images.
– you MUST PARAPHRASE your information – no direct quotes are allowed!
7. Presentation quality, organization, and flow (10 pts)
– must be in orderly, logical fashion that is neat, easy to follow and read
8. Spelling, grammar, and pathophysiology terminology (5 pts)
– information is well-written, free of spelling mistakes, and uses correct pathophysiology terminology throughout
