Overview
Building a case for your research is an important part of the research process. To this end, identifying key pieces of information to include in the Background section of your research paper will benefit you in strengthening your argument.
Directions
- For this assignment, you will identify key pieces of information to include in the Background section of your research paper and organize it according to the “Inverted Triangle” approach defined in the Scientific Writing Tips presentation. You will also communicate the significance of your research topic, which will be part of your paper’s background section.

- Complete the quiz below to include required elements and answering the required questions:
- Part A. After indicating your PICO question, develop a list of bullet points with information that you feel would be helpful in order to introduce the reader to your topic.
- Organize this list in a way that will smoothly transition to your research question/purpose statement. This will serve as an outline for the background section of your research paper.
- Part B. Based on your outline above, communicate the significance of your research question. (i.e., inform the reader why it is important to better understand your topic and gather/evaluate the available evidence)
