The purpose of this assignment is to identify the parts of an argument: main claim, claims, reasons, and evidence. You will be asked to create an argument in your final paper. Hopefully this assignment will deepen your understanding of the components of an argument. Furthermore, this is a powerful speech that you can apply to understanding of Others in your healthcare practice. Please keep your patients in mind as you read or listen. What did you learn from Michelle Obama that can help you connect with your patients more?
Review the CR chapters on “Making an Argument.”
Carefully watch Michelle Obama’s 22 minute graduation speech at Bowie State University. Be aware of the context in which she is speaking and notice who are the stakeholders. This information will be useful to you in understanding the meaning of her argument. The transcript is available in this week’s module if you prefer to read her speech.
For this assignment answer the following questions in a narrative format – well-thought out and written paragraphs:
• What is her overall argument (main claim)?
• What is one claim Obama makes? FYI: She makes several, but only one is required.
• What is one reason to support this claim?
• What evidence does she provide to support this claim?
Remember, “claims because of reasons based on evidence.”
For full points, you should answer the following correctly:
1) One main claim (thesis), one claim, one reason, and one example of evidence (3.5 points).
2) All the components of the argument clearly connect (1 point).
3) Correctly done in-text citations and a well-structured reference list (0.5). Please cite a YouTube and use a time stamp in in-text citations.
